White Tails....

Having owned a white mare for 5 years I stumbled across a trick for whitening her tail.

Prior to washing it - I did it twice the week before. Spray baby oil into it - not too much and brush through, not on the dock though.

A week later, wash it with washing up liquid, then follow with shampoo and conditioner.. WOW is all I can say, lovely silvery tail, mare staining- GONE !! and way way cheaper than whitening shampoo and safe to boot..

Just thought I'd pass the tip on for those of us with white (or grey ) horses for those who didn't know of it.

He is mostly white but only ever seems green or brown!

Will try this. We have a few permanent stains atm.... At the bottom of the tail and on her hindquarters from lieing in it!

Thanks will give it a try I always use fairy liquid for the bottom of the tail and finish off with a shampoo and conditioner and it seems to work well, i'll try the baby oil trick too though....every little helps :-D

I did mine last week and her tail was brown at the end. I used it Vanish (the block type). After leaving it on for ten minutes I frothed it up and rinsed it and it went yellow, so maybe your trick will get the last bit of staining out!

I've also been told to try a small cap full of purple spray in the final rinse as well, but tbh I forgot, so can't recommend one way or another...

I Just had a go at my mares tail this morning. Only read this yesterday so didn't do the baby oil trick yet. But I just used cold water in buckets (no hot on the yard and didn't have time to wait for the kettles to boil)
Fairy Liquid - scrubbed it through with my hands and went throgh the really dirty bits with a cheap plastic brush to loosen it up.
Tesco Shampoo - as for fairy liquid
Tesco Conditioner - rubbed it all through with my hands and then used the brush to get out all the tangles and go over the still dirty looking bits
Once all washed out I combed the whole thing out and then used a bit of furniture polish (tip from a friend who shows Section Ds) for tail shine.
It's come out almost immaculate!! I was so surprised, but very pleased as minimal effort really and cheap.

something i use on white tails, and find to be quite cheap and really effective, is old ladys 'touch of silver' shampoo, gets all the lovely yellow stains out really well

somebody on British dressage site once gave me the tip of adding a drop of blue ink to the water for the final rinse ! - never been brave enough to try it incase I got it wrong !! let me know if anyne brave enough to give it a whirl and if it works !! lol

another tip is "glo white" its a washing machine sachet you get in the supermarket, cheap and works wonders have used it for years
