This has probably been done to death on here before so sorry if this is old news, but has anyone got any handy tips for making a yellow tail white again?! No matter how many times I wash my grey chap's tail it still has a yellow tinge which drives me mad! Any handy tips?! We have our first CIC* at the weekend and keen to look as smart as poss :D

Hibiscrub, loads of warm water, followed by a good scrub with blue shampoo! Works a treat with my dirty white (brown) tail. I'll see if I can find before and after type photos. :)

It's difficult to get rid of the staining completely, but I've always found the blue shampoo helps, as it emphasises the white of the tail.

Not strictly before and after, as I don't have any on the laptop, but the dirty one is generally what his tail is like after about 2 weeks of not being washed.

Clean:
Without blue shampoo (I ran out and the nearest shop that sells it is 40 mins away), so I used hibiscrub and baby shampoo instead.

Your chap is gorgeous :D I'm such a sucker for greys ;) Mine are either flea bitten or dapple so very envious of your white boy!

I can definitely see the difference with the blue shampoo though. I am going to get myself to the saddlers asap and start attacking it! I figured if I wash it daily from now until saturday then I should get a good result. Thank you - will post some piccies

Thanks! He's slowly turning fleabitten now, he had a few dapples on his hindquarters when I got him, which reappear sometimes in winter - it's strange he could not have them one year, then have some the next , and his summer coat has a few chestnut flecks.

The only problem with a white grey is hiding the dirt. :p Sometimes I'm tempted to pretend he's skewbald!

A mixture of Head and Shoulders plus Fairy Liquid gets me this

which usually looks like this

I use hot water and the blue fairy liquid. A good scrub and rinse and if still a bit yellow then I use Cowboy Magic shine in yellow out shampoo. I also rinse with a bit of blue rinse to get it really white.
I find that using fairy liquid can make the hair a little brittle as it strips all the grease out. I make sure I condition my boys tail to ensure it stays a bit softer. I also use lots of detangler spray to try and help keep the worst of the dirt from sticking to it.

Used to use 8 strident tablets dissolved in a bucket of hot water, dunk tail in (upto dock, no further!) then leave it wet to soak for ten minutes, scrub with blue shampoo (Champion Tails was my fave) rinse loads, condition and rinse again. Hens tail looked silvery white after that!

Dont be ripped off with equine "blue shampoo" get down to your local hair dressers suppliers and buy l'orel purple shampoo for silver/grey & blonde hair its magical stuff :)

Use silver highlights champion tails shampoo, followed by silver highlights stain remover, you make by dissolving in very hot water, adding to a bucket then soaking tail, lather and rinse. It makes my grey connie's tail blindingly white.

Thank you very much for all the suggestions - It sounds like Champion Tails gets a thumbs up and doesn't look overly pricey too... Always a good investment when you have 5 grey horses :o :p

Definitely worth trying the strident too - great shout KirstyHen!

Failing that I will book him in at Tony & Guy and ask for whatever Lady Gaga uses ;)

Quic Silver is the best thing ever, much better than Champion Tails IMHO!
Oh and put conditioner through it too seems to get rid of any yellow left. Don't ask me how but it works, just cheap human conditioner is fine.

Tesco Value Fairy Liquid made him look like this:

The colour of his face in the next photo is the colour is whole body was normally as he was rarely rugged up (so he would have been that colour before washing!!)

I use a couple of denture cleaner tablets in hot water, soak then without rinsing I use daz mixed with fairy liquid as a shampoo then rinse. Usually works pretty well.

I did autumns legs at the weekend by mixing chalk powder into a paste and sponging it on the night before - she did get some of it on the bottom of her tail by accident and it looked dazzling white! could maybe use a bit of this after washing just to give it an extra white boost?

I wish I could try it in autumns tail but she has black sections too so it would be very difficult!

My mares tail was so bad that nothing worked. with a big show coming up and in desperation, a friendly hair dresser bleached the end if it for me! Worked a treat and have always been able to get it clean since and that was 9 years ago!
