I hate tackyness which is why ive never used it.

So is White tape out now in the dressage world????

I think it looks fab on very dark bays/blacks, I personally think they look tacky on chestnuts, etc though, but that's IMO

It depends. If you are going to use it the plaits have to be done properly, if they are it can look nice on the right horse.

If the plaits aren't perfectly even and all the same then it doesn't look so good. I used to use it but then everyone started doing it and I don't anymore.

It being out of fashion could actually be beneficial though!!

I was told when I started "not below medium" - by the time I got to medium it was out of fashion! Go for it if your plaits are good enough and it makes your horse look good. If you feel uncomfortable about it then don't do it because you'll not ride as well. I always think that the real point of the turnout is to make me feel like I have a right to be there so that I ride effectively rather than hiding in the corner.

And nothing looks as tacky as what I have seen at a couple of shows - top hat and tails at Novice!

I would only tape at Adv. level or above as i think it can look pretentious at lower levels.
And i also think you have to come in the top 2 in your class to avoid embarrassment if taping plaits.

*runs away to hide*

Oh well I am very happy being tacky then!lol!

I have a chestnut with a white star - personally thinks he looks nice with a white nummah and white tape in his plaits (and have been told so by other people

)

So here are some pics of my boy looking tacky

Nats_uk, your boy looks great. I think you've got the right amount of plaits & tape for your boy.

My boy is Chestnut but i can garantee they wont look as nice as Nats

. So i think i shall give the white tape a miss

.

Thanks everyone.

I do white plaits on my bay horse. He doesn't have much "chrome" of his own, and I think the white highlights his neck which is one of his good points. He competes at Elementary and Medium.

If your horse has a slightly weedy neck, "Anky" plaits look better I think. But I do think white tape looks nice on bays and chestnuts.

For the first time ever at the Trailblazer finals earlier this week I used white tap.
Looie is chestnut and quit plain with not much white and I felt he needed something to bling him up a little. Far from looking tacky I thought he looked fab!!!
What do you think?

I was taught to use tape always (even at Prelim), but that was a while ago, and I was riding a piebald. I don't use it now, but that's just because a) the spooky pony doesn't get regular plaits since he has a long mane, and b) my plaiting tape isn't good, and won't stick properly, so it's too much bother.

I went to Hartpury to Championships a couple of weeks ago and did not see it much . I think it looks nice but is currently out of fashion . I do not think you can beat a row of plain very well made plaits .

I'd never use it - would draw far too much attention to my rubbish plaits, lol! Oh, but it might help hide them...hmm, now there's a thought..and my horse is dark bay

Ive done it once or twice at prelim level and why not if you feel more confident when you show a great turnout go for it !!

a word of warning though on both tests i did with white tapes i got 'on the forehand and unsteady head'
i think its a bit like white gloves if your hands are unsteady not a good idea if you've got issues with head carriage it just highlights it.
