My mare boards at a farm in South Africa called Rathmor Stud. They had a very rare white TB colt with chestnut ears born in September last year. He is by Machiavellian stallion, Kahal, and looks very much like his sire in looks and build. Both his parents are bay and have been parentage validated. He has been named Gran Blanco. He is inbred to Northern Dancer x Mr Prospector.

The farm has a website, view his pics and pedigree here: http://www.rathmorstud.co.za/Foal_GranBlanco.html and our local breeding news has this about him: http://www.kznbreeders.co.za/News06022012.html.

His granddam is from NZ by Soveriegn Edition, and apparently this family has produced a white foal before!

Anyway, its so rare and special thought it would be nice to share. He has an older half-brother in training by King Of Kings(IRE). Has anybody else seen anything like this before?!?! His owners were quite shocked when he emerged!

Ooh a medicine hat, supposed to be lucky! I would post this also in the Breeding section and they will be able to tell you more about the genetics behind this type of marking :)

Wow how cute is that, see this is your first post, so welcome to the forum. Thank you for sharing that with us. Where about in SA are you ?

Hi There,

From Durban, although horses are much more inland in a place called Nottingham Road. I used to compete in jumping and dressage, but sadly packed it in, and went into breeding TB's which I love!

My friend has just gone to Durban to spend two weeks with her dad. Enjoy the forum look forward to hearing more from you :)

Welcome to the forum.
He's a sweet thing isn't he? Quite a big strong looking foal as well. I used to have a white cat with chesnut ears, but have never seen it in a horse.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I have some friends who breed and race horses in SA and I think one of them has a few mares in Durban as well :) I noticed the dam's sire is Rakeen - I used to ride a smashing Rakeen colt here in the UK but he was hot! Apparently Rakeen himself was very hot. He's related to Rahy and Singspiel - Glorious Song was a smashing mare! I'd be interested to hear more about your breeding operation and you might know some of the owners/mares I know out there!

How sweet :) He's quite chunky isn't he? Is he going to be a racehorse?

He absolutely is going to be a racehorse if all goes well. He is bred in the purple, on South African Breeding. His grandsire Rakeen is the sire of our now sadly dead, Jet Master - who has been champion sire in South Africa for 5 consecutive years. The farm gets daily offers for this little colt, but the owner will be sending him to National Yearling Sales which is where he was destined to go anyway if he was a normal colour. His sire Kahal breeds quite big TB's chunky, and brave. His sire is in the top 4 stallions in South Africa. Kahal is by Machiavellian. Perakeen his mother wasnt a shabby racehorse either, and she has had foals to good stallions. Its going to be interesting keeping a watch on this little guy. And South African racing needs this, our racing needs to grow.

Thanks:-) Yes, Rakeen does have them a bit hot. My own foal is by Ravishing, who is in turn by Jet Master by Rakeen. I used to ride a gelding by Rakeen years ago, and he was forward going but not loony fortunately. My mare is at Rathmor Stud which is about a 2 hour drive from Durban, so thats how I know about the white foal!

Does SA tb registration society recognise his colour? Just wondering how it would appear on his passport, as I believe over here tb can only be registered as whole colours. Think he's lovely, bet the breeder can't wait for the sales, his colour alone will give him a future as a sire surely.

Although not at all close to being a racer :p (being a fat, hairy a cob!) my boy has a snow white body, mane and tail, with just brown ears and face markings.

His passport lists him as being "white with a brown face".

I've not seen another like him

Excuse the grumpy face, he was stropping about being given a bath

And straight out rolling after that bath!

He has the same great-grandfather, Mr Prospector, as one of my horses on her sire's side. She is an Irish Sports Horse with King of Diamonds bloodlines on her dam's side. Her colour is bright bay with white socks. (Currently for sale).

What an unusual foal :) ..... my thoroughbred's GGGrandfather is Northern Dancer :D ..... his name is Nanton Point :p

And Northern Dancer is my horse's Great, great grandsire!

Northern Dancer's son was Nureyev, his son was Mulhollande and his son was Sergeyev and Sergeyev is my horse's sire. Jay can be seen in my sig below.

Anyway, back to the OP's post - what a lovely and unusual foal. no doubt he will be someone's prized possession.

My filly and him both share Green Desert so are quite closely related I suppose.

He is very lovely I must say. Mine is bog standard grey!

Northern Dancer is found in more then 70% of horses pedigrees these days. What an amazing little horse he turned out to be!

Thats what I adore about the TB breed, how horses around the world are all related - how amazing is that! I dont even know who were my great grandparents LOL.

In the UK Weatherby's now recognise coloured TB's. In the passport they are marked with Pt for 'Painted'. They are slowly but steadily creeping in and we should start seeing them on the racecourse over the next few years. They are quite a few in the USA. There are a couple of good threads on here. There is a page on Facebook called Coloured TB Breeders which is a source of fantastic information on 'Coloured TB's' worth a look for anyone who's interested.

What an unusual foal!

The first coloured TB yearling to go threw the ring went threw Tattersalls in the October Book 3 sale. He is by (Painted) USA sire I was Framed out of, a bay, Artzola (IRE). He was purchased for 11,000 gns by Boyce Bloodstock for Andrew Reid. Even if he doesn't make it as a race horse im sure he will go down well in ROR classes! :)
