i have been informed by myfarrier that my horse has whiteline disease and was shod by him accordingly ,but can anyone suggest the best sort of bedding for him to stand on,we had thought of having him on just rubbermatting in the day and bedding him down with straw or shavings at night?
also i have been spraying the frog and sole area with purple spray and the wall of hoove with a anti bacterial spray especially around the nail holes ,he,s also having farriers formula now in his feed as advised by my farrier.
is ther anything else i could do to keep this at bay.
 
Keratex Hoof & Nail Hole disinfectant is supposed to be very good - If you squirt it round the coronet band, it soaks down remarkably well.
 
The vet can arrange to get you a antibiotic spray. When rock got it i was also given a powder (cant remember the name began with m and was like little crystals) i wouldnt reccomened shavings but thats because i feel they hold the moisture a lot more than a nice clean straw bed.
 
How does a farrier shoe accordingly for WLD? Is that what he told you? It's more difficult to treat on a shod horse, but I use Virkon in a concentrated paste, applied daily with a hoof brush for as long as I remember. If you have a soaking boot, fill that with virkon solution (or Borax - available from boots). A bit of a faff, but I can't see another way on a shod horse! For as long as you have nail holes, you will always have points of entry for fungi and bacteria. Hope that helps.
 
Hi I have recently been told by a reliable source that cider vinegar is great for loads of things due to it's anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties (dilute it 50/50 with water in a spray bottle).
I knew it was good to feed but didn't realise that it's uses also include white line disease, thrush, seedy toe, mud fever, rain scald, frog condition on bare foot horses etc etc.
I have started using it on mare who is on box rest. Since having her shoes removed her feet have got a litle smelly, having used the vinegar for 4 days they are beginning to look and smell better.
I wish I'd know last year when a got a new livery with terrible rain scald which took months of hard work to fix!
