As HG feels we are being a little quiet this week - thought I'd start a thread.
With hopefully everyone's mares in foal (those who are going to be) has anyone made any decisions on stallions for next season. Be interesting to see how often you change your mind between now and then.

I've got a few that look likely at present -
Of the mares that are empty
Christie (grey Trakehner) will go to Axis again (although I am praying the vet just missed it and is she is really in foal)

Dell (by Demonstrator) might well go to Sempers Spirit
http://www.unitedcolouredstud.com/sempers.htm

Gerty (eventer by Landino) is a difficult one. I am torn between 3 options for her. One is to go for a Selle francais stallion either Alligator Fontaine or Jaguar Mail, but both rather pricey options.

Another option is to go for a coloured Trakehner eventing stallion for her who I know would be a good match physically but isnt so well known

Or as she graded SHB this year, do we use our service voucher and an SHB stallion like Up with the Lark?

Orange (black BWBS by Spirit of Orion) will probably go to Festivohttp://www.goshka.co.uk/Goshka%20Festivo.htm

Which just leaves my Trakehner mare Venezia, coloured mare Dee Dee and cremello mare Lanka. Will have a lot of fun selecting for those 3, liking Weltmeyer for Lanka and Stedinger for Dee at the moment

I'm really liking Phanten for my maiden mare next spring!.

Langaller should be standing a nice son of Matinee, so I may send one of our mares to him if I like him, as the two four year olds by Matinee we have are pretty special.
Our mares bar one are having a year off this year, the rest will go back to Chocolate our own stallion, the first three year old has been broken last month and sold to the first to view her; she was sane/beautiful and showed a promising jump the one time we tried her over a fence or two, so no point in me looking elswhere.

I might go for broke and try to breed a nice sports type using either Jaguar Mail or Painted Black. My mare is an SJ type, but she has athletic, floaty paces, so putting her to a dressage sire might produce something interesting

Bjorsell's Briar
Londonderry
Kaiserkult
Painted Black
Milky Way
Arentino

Any of the above would be nice, seriously considering Bjorsell's Briar though. I'm thinking a new broodmare for christmas!

Right, Volatis; this should be educational; we can see your mares on your web site and the stallions from the links you gave us; and you've clearly considered every mare as an individual- so, how have you arrived at your choices?

You've more freedom than a stud standing a stallion or stallions who need to promote their own boys and who may have selected their mares for that one stallion anyway, and more mares to cover than most of us who don't own stallions

You also have quite a variety of mares in terms of pedigree though with an underlying pattern of quality, and your background influences are broad- (yes- I've been noseying on your web

) and you're not tied to one breed; so where have you started in each case? If you don't mind sharing the trade secrets it would be fascinating to hear this.

Well I wont be permitted to take Mo out of work next year, but Craig Millard has a very nice 2yo that may be going forward for grading next year. He has the most laid back temperment & he could certainly move nice enough. I am going to keep an eye on him, but he will be kept entire if he does not grade then he wont stand to the public. Mill Law is another possible but it is finding the right stallion to compliment my mare. I dont have the advantage of looking back into her breeding. Even though my daughter trains with a dressage rider, she wants to Event if not then SJ, so that is what I would be looking to breed for. I have 2/3yrs to look at stallions which is always interesting anyway.

Late tonight just got back from the evening do at MKEC which Tamara is determined to do next year.

I'll be using my own stallions on the majority of my mares.
Loheky Helios de Bornival, Georgeo, Hot Business and Bellagio. I will also be using some of my Romeo semen. I may use the last ever dose of Ousbek semen as well (but I am not decided I might save it), I also have some Vechta semen that I haven't got round to using yet, I have been waiting for the right mare to come along. I am considering using Its the Business on my big mare (17.3) but I my be selling her, I am really undecided atm. I also have a service voucher for my dun mare and I haven't a clue who I want to send her to, if anyone!

No-one, sadly.

Both my mares were bred too late this year (July and August) so if I put them back in foal for 2009 they'd have to carry through hot summers and the foals would be only a few months old when the cold weather hits.

I love choosing the Stallions for my mares, its the best bit. I just hate the 11 months of worry that follow! I usually use young stallions in thier first year of breeding. Last year I used Open up semilly, Kalaska de semilly, ivory star and cardero.
However, next year I would love to use For pleasure, Sandro boy, L'Arc de triomphe. But I would need to win the lotto first so may well have to think again.

rema - i know of a phanten 3yr old its out of the loveliest kindest mare and it has turned out to be the badest tempered rudest 3yr old and its proving to be awkward 2break in, this could just be the mare but personally i dont think its a good recommendation for the stallion

Ah thank you for your imput!.My mare is very good natured and kind but i dont want to breed a monster for my first foal or my mares first foal.I think i need to do some more homework on him and maybe some others!.Thanks.

Well, IF I breed from B again, it may well be a return to Goshka Ringo (will see what she throws to him). I also REALLY like Anastasia's MFS Vision, Chequille Z and FRESHMAN's Indoctro youngster may be thrown into the mix (need piccies though - hint, hint!)

Blimney alleycat, dont think I have any trade secrets, just many nights spent drawling the web, or nipping off to breed shows etc. Apologies in advance if this is long winded

I do have a diverse broodmare band and I think that stems from growing up in Africa where the seasons dictated the competition, for example we could only event at the end of the rainy season, so our eventers had to be good enough to do other things. The country was so huge, each show was at least 2 days and often 4 or 5, so we had a go at showing, dressage and jumping. Even now dressage is my first love, but I work on a showing yard and I still hope to get back eventing one day before my courage completely deserts me.

I've always loved Trakehners, hence they are a big part of my band. I love the emphasis on the mare line, as to me thats the most important part - the stallion name sells them, but the mare family is the biggest influence. With my Trak mares if breeding a pure bred I look at nicks I think work (hence breeding Cover Girl to Axis - her half brother Connery is to die for and he is a Sixtus grandson, Axis is a Sixtus son). I also look at what physical areas need improvement, and see if I think the stallion can offer that. I also think of my market. For example with Caprice I wanted to try for a filly to retain as a future broodmare, I know Caprice is a better producer than she looks herself (genotype over phenotype) but needs improvement in the hind end especially more power and pelvic tuck. Tycoon is a known broodmare producer, and has the movement I wanted with some strong jumping influences in his pedigree to help enforce that pelvic improvement. The resulting filly Casi seems to have the best of both parents - cracking hind end, and feminine and typey, with a pedigree to match.

I also love coloured horses, in fact I love spots, palominos, anything a bit blingy
grin.gif

My coloured mare Dee I picked more for her type and what she produces than her pedigree as when I bought her I couldnt find a coloured mare that ticked all the boxes with the right pedigree too. So with her I am trying to upgrade her pedigree. I know she stamps her foals well so I can try younger stallions on her, hence Don Ricoss last year and Showmaker this year. If I have a gut feeling about a young stallion I think it is worth a risk on him. Take Don Ricoss for example, he's not over big, has very good performance record. Is by the fabulous Don Frederico (who is part Trakehner), with Weltmeyer (my all time favourite) on the dam side and a very strong dam line. Dee throws big and her foal this year has taken that trait again, but the movement that is developing is bigger and more 'modern' than Dee's - coming from Don Frederico I think.
This year I thought sod it on the size issue and went for Showmaker as I think he is a rising star, and again a super dam line with Fidermark (another favourite) on the dam side. He is very uphill and had the more modern movement I think Dee needs.

My eventing mare and Demonstrator mare came to me a little by chance. The Demonstrator is mare is a really commercial mare. She has a solid pedigree but lacking a little on the dam's side further back. She proved herself under saddle and is the most straight forward, easy mare and throws cracking foals. So with her I breed for coloured foals with real all round potential, trying to pick coloured stallions that will compliment her type and worrying less about pedigree matches. The eventing mare, is just a one in a million mare, and every year I think, do we try and breed a coloured foal from her or do we go pure eventer

not sure if any of that made any sense??

Great Volatis, thanks. Really interesting to see how you make your choices. Thanks for spending the time to tell.

Must confess, I liked this: [ QUOTE ]

Drawling: trawling and drooling? Will appropriate that word for my own use....

PMSL !! Love it- a new word to add to my vocabularly!

Back to Merit in the early spring.
Am I the only person using this fantastic stallion or is it because 'e is Thoroughbred and therefore unfashionable in this world of warmbloods?

I dont think it is anything to do with being old fashioned. The problem is that there is no info on him. He is not listed with Weatherbys
Horse Name
YOF Sex Pedigree

Merit 1956 F Djebe - Meroe
Merit 1965 G Golden Merle - 99Merit
Merit 1922 F Cylgad - Willasure
Merit 1950 F His Slipper - Merceria
Merit 1921 F Unknown - Unknown

I dont remember seeing him advertised anywhere or seeing any stock by him. Special Edition is a cracking TB stallion by Nickel King (who incidentally has had great success with breeding eventers), but he is not a commercial stallion. If the owners dont do anything to publise their stallions then mare owners are not going to know about them. Temperment is important to me, I dont have the time to mess about with a hothead, having said that it is that spark that normally makes a good competition horse. I cant believe how difficult it is to find information on the mares though, I have plenty of info on the stallion lines, but mares a different kettle of fish. Even on the All Pedigree Database info & photos on the mare are often missing. I tried looking for Merit & drew a blank so perhaps you would like to provide some info?

wow, volatis. i'm not often gobsmacked, but i am now.
please could you tell me what "pelvic tuck" is?
i have obviously never given quite enough thought to what stallions i used on my mares... even though i agonised for months and months, made lists and lists, travelled all over the place looking at stallions, and asked advice all round, i have still never managed to breed what i wanted/needed! i've bred 4 total, over the years, all for me to event, but i think i've given up now... i've always thought it was just a huge gamble, because i never got quite what i planned (or, when i did, one turned out to be a nightmare, and then his full-brother, much easier horse, became a terrible headshaker) - maybe it isn't such a gamble, in my case it was lack of analysis and deep knowledge.
anyway, it was fascinating reading how much thought and analysis you put into your breeding combinations... thankyou!
