I think, (and am happy to receive abuse!) that my dog is fat. So, I am going to have to cut down on her intake, and watch the kids like hawks that they don't feed her! (me thinks this is the main culprit to her waist line?)
So, is she fat, obese, morbidly obese, or ok - just?

BTW, she is 1/2 lab, 1/2 whippet and is very nearly 7 years old.

I dont think she is too bad, I was preparing to see a really fat dog and in fact she would put a lot of dogs I know to shame. I like my dogs lean and as they are high energy its not too difficult. I think your dog is a tad plump for my eye but quite good overall and as your children have been feeding her it could have been a lot worse.

Its hard to tell from those pics but she doesn't look too bad to me. Can you get any pictures of her from above, she should be showing a definite "waist" when looking down at her.

Ummm sorry but I am going to be the bad guy as usual - she looks overweight to me :o She is very balanced about it, but her shoulders look loaded to me as well as over her ribcage and hindquarters?

Do bear in mind though that (a) I have greyhounds and (b) I abhor overweight dogs so am always likely to be mean and err on the side of skinniness  ;)

Your not bad!! She IS porky, maybe not so much from a labs point of view but from a whippet, well, ummm!!
As I said before, diet starts.

(To be fair on the dog though, she doesn't get so much excersise on Fri - Sun due to me be madly rushed off my feet as I have to be in 3 different places at once, and can fit in only 2 shorter dog walks rather than spending all day with me outside on the remaining days).

I think the lab in her is fighting with the whippet, shape wise. :D
Built like a whippet, but is sort of filled in with labrador. :D

Yep, she's tubby but I can't talk as so is mine. I bet she feels nice to smack on the bum though (lovingly) :D We should have a before & after doggy weighloss thread! Good luck with her diet :)

HEHE bless you and her!! She is a porky little thing, a good indication is to feel the ribs, if you have to poke hard to find them then theres your answer lol....

go on fess up what is she exactly getting in one day?

One of the nurses at our practice NEVER feeds her dog, its a collie and it just gets a few scraps from the dinner table, I must admit it looks smashing, so proves that a few tit bits can be enough to substain a healthy weight, so you put your food on top of that, its easy to see how they get fat, isnt it?

PS nobody will give you abuse cos you sound loverly!:D

Arhhhh, thankies!!

Her daily diet is, for breakfast she gets 1 piece of dried toast (plan to make that a half slice now)
And for her tea she gets 1 cup (small tea cup style) of currently Chappies dry dog food, although I alternate that with bakers/tesco own, and some left overs. I do try not to give her too much left overs, so the bin still is in use! lol (I plan to cut that down gradually too).

Mondays - Thursdays she is with me all morning, outside running about, looking for the odd mouse or bunny, and then an evening walk of 20/30 mins. Fridays is normally a lazy day with 2 x 20 mins walks, and free use of the garden all afternoon if she is not alseep! Weekends depends on whether or not my mother has her while I work, be a farmer and visit relations. If she is with me, then I try my best to give her 3 x 20 min walks. Note, my OH hardly ever takes her out, and I think I must try to make him do this more often!!

She's lovely, and I've seen a lot worse, weight-wise.

In all honesty, though, how much does she gad about when in the garden? I know that with my two, one will actively hunt and roam when in a garden, while the other plods, with about ten seconds of real energy expended. He needs long walks, otherwise he reverts to utter blobdom.

Might you fit in a structured walk in the morning? Or have her chase a ball or twig?

She has her hot dog.... best thing since... being fed! She chases that around like a young pup, very funny to watch. She can shift like a whippet when she wants to!!

HEHE i had a giggle at the toast!! How about no toast or any other treats and split the chappie she has of an evening between 2 meals?? xx If you want to give her some treats mix her complete biscuits with water and make into a little biscuit and bake in the oven? but remember to take this out of her daily allowance xx

She needs a good quality food with real meat in it!
All that grain in terrible for a dog.
Try fish4dogs or maybe skinners.

She had roast chicken with her meal the other day... spoilt dog!
She would love real meat, but I am sticking to a strict £ budget and real meat all the time does exceed that. Any wet 'fake' dog meat does make her pong alot, so I don't go down that route.

Bakers and chappie is fake dog meat!
Its terrible quality.

In both practices I have worked in, the majority of the vets recommend Chappie, best in the tinned form, but fantastic for dodgy bellies and our collie had nothing else, and same for my terriers, currently aged 13 and 16 and are in tip top health, I Love chappie, even if it does smell extremly fishy!

Ergh its horrible stuff.

It really means very little to me that vets recommended it seeing as there nutrition training is next to nothing and what they do have is provided by the brand that most vets stock.

What do you feed your dog on katielou? I looked at that fish4dogs stuff but they only seemed to do dry food which our older dog does not think is worth eating! Ours both get mixer and a well know brand of tinned dog food - although old dog still turns his nose up at that! What he DOES love is very expensive small tins of cat food but obviously he cannot be fed those regularly as far too rich so save that or feeding him live food (oh yes, a live rabbit would do him fine!) it's a bit tricky. Why is tinned dog meat seen as the devil??

Not all tined meat but most has a shocking amount of grains and very little meat. Less than 4% most of the time. And a lot contain known carcinogens.
Fish4dogs do a salmon mousse which is your beat option after fresh meat.

Honestly the best thing you can probably do other than switching to raw is get a good kibble and add some cooked mince to it.

My dogs are fed raw after years and years of dog food research.

She'd be better off on table scraps alone, meat, spuds, pasta etc without the dried food, especially Bakers, it can put weight on if the dog just looks at it :p
You can feed a dog well on a budget without those foods!
