Who clips in summer?

Have been debating this. If I clip him now (highland) will it interfere with his winter coat growth. I normally full clip from October anyway so in theory it should make the job easier, shouldnt it?

I clip all year round on my event horse to keep her cool. I find it doesn't interfere with her coat at all. In between clips her coat is still soft and glossy. I leave her to get fluffy on her winter break and the coat always seems to be thick and warm enough to leave her without a rug until the weather turns. She doesn't have the coat for long though as by mid December she is back in work and so I clip it all off again.
I clipped her completely out again on Monday and she is much happier in this hot weather now that she is naked!

I clip all year round, I've clipped dozens of horses all summer for years and not once had a problem with their coat, it's just a myth.

Unless you're doing showing then they like to keep them looking a certain way I guess?

I have been thinking about doing this for the last few years now as my bay gets quite hot and always has to wear a fly rug 24/7 as he is so sensitive to fly bites and gets bitten alive. He does have a really thin coat so I've always been worried about removing his coat,he wouldn't have that extra bit of protection of his coat? if that makes sense. Maybe I should just take the plunge and get the clippers out??

I have done when competing properly :) And our HW cobs are this year. Doesn't impact on the coat IMO :) Our cob shows freshly fully clipped but he is mainly White.

Yes, did a trace clip the other week on my IDx Connie who has also been getting rather hot!! Took even more off yesterday and he is much happier, will probably do every year now if he is working hard

Yep, same here. Sweet itchy lad is fully clipped and hogged. He's much, much happier for it. Plus, we don't have the dandruff build up that SI horses often get - a quick flick with a brush and it's all gone. I think this might have been contributing to the itch previously.

However, I'm not convinced he's got all his summer coat through. He should be fully ginger by now, but he's still got some roaning over his bum, which is his 'winter look'.

I clip my miniatures. They show but the older one gets too warm so it all gets whipped off.

Just about to do my show hunter ID. He's gray so it's less obvious but if he needs it to be able to work and be more comfortable then I don't worry about whether its correct or not. His well being comes first.

Be careful of sunburn if you clip greys or coloured horses. A friend's coloured got badly burned after being clipped, she never thought it would be an issue.
