I have today been offered two jobs

Job A - Closer to yard, standard 9-5 hours, get to leave early if hit your daily target (even if at 3pm....)

Job B - Further from yard, potentially hours of shifts ranging between 9am - 5pm or on 11.30 - 7.30 or 12.30 till 8.30.....this have yet to be finalised as a fairly new team/role but the shifts would be rotated so you're not constantly doing the same hours.

So, who, would take job A based on less more but more time with horse, or take job B as more money and bigger company so better prospects.....

If someone can help you with your horse, bringing in, feeding at night then I would take job B, it would probably mean more time with your horse as you could ride in daylight hours before work if you wanted.
My horse rules my job too, unhorsey people look at me like Im mad :D

i quite like the sound a job b but it depends how flexible the arrangements are at your yard?

Sounds like you could ride and spend time at the yard on the mornings when you start later but would somone be able to finish horsey off in the evenings? or could you go up later on yourself?

If you're looking for a very set routine then job a is perfect. I think it depends on your personal circumstances and yard arrangements.

Yep, I always work out how my hours are going to work around the horses before accepting a new job! Especially as mine have no grazing so get 4 top-ups of hay a day to keep them going. Personally I would go for Job A as the hours are more regular, so you know what you are doing and when. The money side of it wouldn't bother me as long as I was earning enough to feed me and the horses.

Me

My job doesn't allow me much time with my horse at all during the week in the summer.

However, I have to pay for my horse somehow, and as I am still in the process of moving up the ranks this is just the kind of thing I'm expected to do. Sucks, but tis not forever :)

I'd take job A but purely because I dont like working shifts, but they're not late shifts. If you can work doing your horse around work then I'd take B.

It's always possible to make things work.

I was offered a job that I thought would make owning a horse a nightmare....but actually has worked out well and I have even gone from one horse to 2!!

I now travel 70 miles to get to work, which takes 1h15mins....I start my working day at 7.30am so I can leave early to be at the yard normal time.

I do have to get up at 5am, and leave the yard at 6.15am, but it works, and once I'm in the routine it really doesn't feel like such an early morning.

The tempter with the job was a massive promotion and a 100% payrise, which now puts me on a salary that allows me to pay for full or part livery as and when I need to.

My horses rule my job choice. I choose to have a crappy job, but I have farily regular hours, and im only 5 mins away so I can get home and back in lunch break.

I would love a better job but being so rural there are not many options. I would consider a job further away if it payed enough to cover extra costs of paying someone to do horses.

Im moving in March for my Job and partner horses are coming with me and will be next to the house, however if anything happened with me and my partner I actually dont know how I would have them. But hes lovely so I will be fine unless he has enough of me :D

I did!!

I moved nearly 4 years ago to a job that offered me better training and was closer to the yard. They have a semi flexi time so you can work 8 til 4.30 or on the half hours up to 9.30 til 6.

They let me change my hours with the seasons so I work 8 til 4.30 during BST (have all the light evenigns to ride) and do 9.30 til 6 during the winter to make the most of the light mornings.

I turned down a job offering £5k a year more as it was further away any they weren't prepared to offer flexible working hours.

I'm looking for a new job now though as I currently have to travel to clients quite a bit and would like to cut that down.

My sentiments too.

When I was looking for another job, my horse was one of many considerations that I had to make.

I am very tempted by job A, only because i know i can make up the difference in salary in commission, leave early when target hit, and even if i didnt leave early, its much closer to yard and my home.....

Job B is a pull due to salary only, as it is a bigger base salary with commission on top.....

There are also (apparently) a few other horsey people at job A, where as Job B is a LARGE company and very corporate.....

Probably A, More time with my horses which at the end of the day is why I work. Also I don't like shift work going into evenings etc. I work different time but start no earlier than 9am and finish no later than 4pm. (Only work part time as doing an OU degree too)

Job A would be my choice, I work to pay for my horses, and I want to be able to enjoy them, I've turned down numerous jobs recently if they don't fit the bill as in my current job I have tonnes of time!
At the end of the day, I think life is for living, and I don't want to be working all of it! If you can afford to, you should make time for the things you enjoy in life! :D
I'm sure you'll make the right decision whichever one you choose! And Congrats!! :D

I think, and I don't want to sound patronising at all but I'm having issues with how I say things at the moment :o ) that both sound workable around your horses and you should choose the company you think you'll be happiest at. If you are concerned working for a big corporate company and think you'd enjoy the other job more than decision made. Salary isn't everything and you should go wherever you think you won't end up counting the minutes down until you can leave every day.

Forgetting the horses briefly, which would you prefer if you only had to think of yourself (which I think you do in honesty)

I do 8-4, and is based round the horse, and my employer was happy as long as I do my hours. My work has also been great with me having to attend vet visits for our recent 'accident'. However, if for some reason I had to change companies, for redundancy for example, I am not sure how many other employers would be as flexible as mine is now, but I guess I would just have to deal with it, as no work, no horse.

Yup, mine did. I went to night shift so I could finish work and feed at 7.30am and then when I wake up, they get seen to at 2pm.

My boss had my name down for a weeks training in England, and then remembered I have my ponies and decided to make someone else go :) Even my (non-horsey) company fits around my ponies.

Personally I would take Job B, simply as I have been working shifts on and off for 20 years (various jobs). Yeah it is a pain having to work lates but I found when I was doing 8-5pm Monday to Friday I was always trying to cram everything into 2 days at the weekend along with everyone else. The shifts I do are 8-5pm or 1-10pm, I have a very good arrangement with the owner of the yard where I keep my horse, she brings him in on my late turn and I get up at 5.15 to muck him out etc when I am days. I can ride my horse pretty much 4-5 times a week and when I do get my "treasured" days off I don't feel rushed as time off during the week is great, I can spend all day with my horse and not have my husband complaining that I spend more time "playing with my pony" 'cos he doesn't know as he is at work himself. :D:o:)

Jess - r.e. thinking of myself comment, did you mean me personally or people in general?

It is to a certain extent thinking of myself even though its to do with the horse, as its me who wants more time with her, less travel to her, more of a set routine etc....i think job a is for me to be fair, i think i'd be happier there and susequently stay there a long time.

Job.

My career only gets one shot to get it right without passing up opportunities that come my way until people think you're not interested in progressing so don't bother to ask. Reckon horse'd be pissed if i couldn't afford to feed him or make sure he had clean bedding or starve myself so i could that new rug he desperately needs!!

Luckily for me I share DIY yard duties with somebody else and I am currently covering after her huge career promotion so she can be at the executive meetings until 7pm at night and she can work late to make sure those documents are right and the wording not misleading and she can go to the early morning meetings in London and not worry about the horse. And she'd do the same for me, so yes, my job comes first. If i didn't have her, i'd still go after my career and pay somebody on the yard a couple of quid a day to turn out or bring in, dependant on which i needed.

Sorry guys!! Don't think any less of people who want it all :)

I think all I was trying to say was that your horse will definitely be fine either way and you should do what makes you happier. I know what you mean, being with mine more makes me happier too, and having a job where they understand if I need to leave for a couple of hours for the farrier etc. Obviously that stuff is sort of thinking about my horse but mostly it is thinking of myself because it just makes my life so much easier not having to stress if I need the vet etc.

I didn't entirely consider my horses when I took my job but I did think 'these are nice people that I know I'll get on with and feel comfortable saying I need to leave on time today' or whatever I sometimes need to say. I used to work at a much bigger company where they just couldn't get their heads round the fact that I couldn't just stay late, sometimes I needed a morning off at short notice etc and it was a totall ball ache!

See i drive a moped and my fella takes the car, job a allows me a 10 mins moped ride to work and is not far from yard, job b i can get to by train but if i needed time for farrier, vet, emergency, id need train back to my town, get home, get moped, get to yard, so thats decided then job A! Yay.

I think it is a balance and if at all possible try and chose the job that you think you will enjoy the most, if you are going to be stuck at work full time then more you enjoy it the happier you will be.

A stressful job that you hate can mean that the time you spend with your horse is spoiled as you are stressed and thinking about work etc.

I would not stay in my job if I did not have a pony, I have a long commute, and the job can be very stressful but the pay is good and there is a degree of flexibility in that I if I work late one evening a week I can leave early another day. My pony lives out so no fixed time that I need to get to the yard to bring him in or turn him out.

I do think money is important though as you need to earn enough to be able to look after your horse properly.

This is why I'm self-employed! I still work long hours (am working now at 10pm, well ahem having a brief HHo break) but I rode both my boys between 4 & 7 tonight. I love having a bit of time outside in daylight hourse & can be there for emergency farrier appointments, vets etc.

yep, I turned down a job with a higer salary (about 15% higher) as the hours weren't so good for the horses and it was a bit further travelling (= getting to the yard later in the evening).
