Who didn't get a horse until later in life?

I know you didn't want me to keep mentioning it, but I'm on HOLIDAY

Ive ridden since I was a kid...had a succession of shared ponies, work for rides and loans etc...but I didnt actually have my very own horse until I was 35 (shock horror!)

By this time I had pretty much reached the top of my career, done an MSc, got married and had 2 children.....so I had the money and the support of my OH.

Now between us we have 3 horses.....so watch it, you start off with one, then somehow you get another and another and end up getting up practically before you go to bed to muck out. Worth it though.

Got my daughter one last year with its evil flesh eating companion pony coming for free cos no one else was stupid enough to have him. At the time I couldn't ride. Now we have three and my boy is a 17.3hh Dutch warmblood and we are starting dressage and eventing later this year. Im male, a Master Mariner, took up medicine at 30 and have an MBA. How old am I... 52!! Put off my PhD this year to buy a lorry and concentrate on getting serious about my riding lol
You are never too old or too sensible.

I got Elsa when I was 25, I sold my share of my house to my ex boyfriend and as I was living with new boyfriend by then I decided to treat myself as I had ridden most of my life but parents had never been able to afford a horse of my own.
It was always my dream and it was always what I said I would buy first if I won the lottery!
I loved having her at 25 because I'm still young enough to have the energy to get up at stupid o clock to muck out but I'm old enough to be able to afford nice things for her and to keep her how I want to rather than how parents want to.
I did sometimes feel a bit self conscious at first if I wasn't sure about something and had to ask for peoples help but everyone had to start somewhere!
2 years later my pony is now broken and can't be ridden but i love her so much because she was my dream come true that she will always be my pet and will live with me forever.
Now it's just a matter of waiting until I'm old enough to afford two.....

I am 36, been after a pony since I was 4 and STILL no sign of getting my own ( though not for lack of trying at hte moment- getting so fed up of looking for a loan that i may just buy one !).

I got my pony to share the day after I finished my last exam for my degree (21), a week or two later I had her on full loan and 6 months later I bought her. I still have her now- 4 years later and a year ago I bought a horsebox so we could go competing. (Still living at home to fund this lifestyle though).

I am waiting to buy a house with OH and get settled and then I am looking at buying a lovely older happy hacker for myself to enjoy beautiful rides on. That's the dream anyway.

Its definitely worth the wait. I rode from the age of 5 and had various ponies on loan until age 16, then met OH and discovered motorbikes. Had a 12 year gap (bought house, got married etc.) and started again at age 28. Bought first horse at 34 and now in my early forties still own one (in fact just got new boy a couple of months ago) and definitely wouldn't be without one now.

So yes, no matter how long you have to wait, I personally feel its worth it.

28, still waiting!

Nearly went for it twice in the past two years but so glad I didn't, things are financially hairy at the mo. My heart still aches a bit for the horse in my sig and I get jealous when I hear that other people are riding him or having lessons on him - I started riding him when he was three and we really clicked. It's actually easier for me not to see him.

I have plenty to ride though and I think I will wait a bit longer - it would be hard to travel as much as I like to with such a big responsibility at home. It's hard enough with dogs!

I was 31 when I got mine. Wasn't allowed riding lessons as a child - too expensive & there were 3 of us. So in my 20s I helped other people with their horses & taught myself to ride. Then husband & I bought a derelict small holding & I had somewhere to keep a horse but money was tight so I had horse in one hand / book in the other, a full time job, a baby & was doing an OU degree as well as helping renovate the house. It was worth it all. I'm now retired & have 2 horses I bred + a little rescue pony & enjoy all the chores, beach rides, lessons, competitions etc that I can now afford.

I was 41. Started riding aged about 4; stopped in teens for school, boyfriends, work, marriage, children type reasons. Started again at 38 and bought my boy three years later. Now have nutty 22 yr old mare as well who was given to us as a companion for the Boy. OH rides mare, so he was also 41 when he got his first horse!
