Who Do You Let Ride Your Horse?

I let anyone ride Badger, at home he really is anyone’s ride. We have had people on him, on the lead who have never ridden before.

Bodey, well apart from me, _Gina_ (who doesn’t partially enjoy riding him because she finds him too wide), and my instructor, nobody else regularly rides him. Jess with Pickle and Beth with Henry have both had a go though.
Not sure I would let a complete beginner on him, even though I’m sure he would be fine.

I let anyone ride Dor. If they can't ride, she'll stand and look at me as if to ask why we're bothering. If they can ride then thats all okay.

She's just not special enough to be an issue with other riders

The only way I can ride nowadays is through the generosity of other people letting me ride their horses, so I hope that when I eventually!! get my own i will be able to give others the opportunity to ride.

My sharer (goes without saying I guess!) I wouldn't let anyone rough ride him but I like you, would expect to see my instructor ride him (if I had 121lessons) because I think an instructor should ride the horse to see what it goes like, before the try and teach you!

I dont let anyone ride Ellie.

My instructor has ridden her in the past (but shattered his leg in doing so
tongue.gif
strangely he showed little inclination to ride her after that!) and I have let both my OH and my brother - both non-riders - sit on her in the field, but that's it. I think people at the yard think I'm barmy - not only would I never let anyone ride her but I also hate anyone other than Mum, myself and my OH handling her. This is partly due to me worrying about her being so skittish, and partly because when we were at our last yard, the one time I asked someone to turn Ellie out for me, Elz allegedly 'attacked her with teeth and hooves'

Hey ho!

I have let a few people ride Sammi, but in all honesty, to ensure he's happy, and then carries on going well for me after, I have to be choosey what 'type' of rider goes well on him! He likes my instructor and anyone else who's quiet on him. But hates my experiences eventer friend as when she rides him, it means work - and it means proper work - how SHE wants to ride - NOT how HE wants to ride!! Whilst I'm out of action, I am giving him time off! Not worth upsetting him! ...and they say mares are temperamental xx

I used to let almost anyone ride Beacon in the school but no one was allowed to hack him, don't think they would have wanted to anyway he could spin on a penny before you knew it.

New one I'm a little protective of as he is very sweet and sensitive and some riders I know are just too heavy with their aids and hands so will not be allowed near him. There are a couple of exceptions Amy is a good rider and does some jumping for me as I am not strong enough yet. Also there are 2 friends both experienced I would let ride him if they wanted too, or I needed someone to ride because I am not well enough, which unfortunately may be the case soon

QR, but I don't understand people that won't let other people get on their horse (unless there is a very good reason). I think it helps with the horse learning to deal with different types of rider and especially if they're show horses!

Moo is a bit sharp but is great with novice riders and Ty is ok aslong as you don't ask anything of him! I also enjoy riding other peoples horses....

I am very possesive after having someone ride my old horse and me having to go so far back with her it was unreal.
I let my OH and my mum and sometimes an instructor i really trust ride mine and thats it.

Anyone is welcome to ride my horse, but depending who they are and how experienced they are
tongue.gif

Horse is excellent to hack on roads, especially at walk and trot, but can get excited when cantering nothing nasty he just enjoys himself which could scare the more novice riders. Therefore novice riders can walk and trot but not canter

Anyone can ride him in the school

When under my supervision I will let pretty much anyone sit on my horses, from total beginners to riders far better than me. Darcy has given many people their first jump and has had several other people ride him regularily over the last few years. Pinky is a little more sharp and sensitive but is still ridden occasionally by my OH, 2 or 3 of my friends and my Instructor and Rascal is OH horse who Instructor, friends and me ride regularily too. Oh, and my friends 10yo sits on them, and will ride Darcy regularily once he is a bit bigger.

I've never been precious about people riding them - I believe it's a big part of a young horses education to be ridden by different people, it also shows how well schooled your horse is if you can let other people ride them with no issues. I'm sure thet there are horses out there that do prefer to be ridden by just one person but personally I won't tolerate that from any of mine.

I understand your viewpoint and I do actually agree, but I am very possessive and am always terrified that something will go wrong

Ellie is my baby, and the thought of watching someone ride her away from me is terrifying!!! It was bad enough when we had our first (and only!) attempt at a Riding Horse class a couple of years ago, and the judge got on her...I hated every moment of it
crazy.gif
I agree it would help for a competition horse to have different riders, but I guess for me, the bottom line of it all is that no one is EVER going to ride Ellie other than me - and as we only hack, there would be nothing much to be gained by her being ridden by anyone else!

That was very long winded and doesnt make much sense

Sorry!

I hate people riding Cheeky because he looks after them! He's very genuine and for the first ride is always a gem, prompting the usual sniggers about me making up how strong and silly he can be. However, not many people want to ride him anyomre- the last people we lent him to out hunting came in within half an hour- he's a bit arsey and if you don't do exactly the right thing (stay at the front and jump everything) he buggers off and prats about. He did this, and scared her, so no one else os hunting him unless I trust them and they know what he's like!

Interesting how many people openly admit to being posessive about their horse.

I am afraid I am very posessive. I just feel like Mic is my boy, and we have such a strong partnership that when someone else gets on now I can see that he is a little anxious.
Having said that, when he was a youngster several people sat on him and walked/trotted around gently. I did feel that was good for him.

I had a really bad accident a few yrs ago and my friend/instructor rode him a couple of times a week for me, whilst I lunged him. (Against all medical advice you understand).
crazy.gif
I was away for a couple of days this week and she rode him. I have no issue at all with her riding him. In fact, I am sure he benefits greatly!!!!
wink.gif

Because I am nervous hacking out but want him to have a change of scenery from the school I pay a member of yard staff to walk him out. I only want him walked though and I am not 100% happy letting him out on his own (not 100% trust from me in the rider to be sensible, although she is very competent) so I walk with them.

So, I do let a couple of well chosen others ride, but I still feel posessive at the same time if that makes any sense! However, I try to see past that and do the best for him.
smile.gif

He is fine to ride, doesn't do anything in particular with an established rider. He would react to a novece though I think.

hmmmmmmm, well, not that many people have ridden my 4yo, after all he's only 4 and iv owned him less than a year.i also keep him at home so not many people around.
my sister has ridden him in the school and hacking out and id happily let her take him to a show, but she's 1) very talented, and 2) got balls of steel.
couple of my friends have ridden him in the school, not sure id let them hack him/show him as he can be sharp and i wouldnt want to upset them. in the school id happily let anyone on him, from grannies to toddlers-he's a well behaved and well schooled boy. (disclaimer, provided they wernt heavy handed/rough rider, i mean anyone who tries to ride softly).

i always make it my aim to produce horses that im happy to put people on and that they enjoy riding, means im doing my job well!!!!!! in a couple of years id hope my baby boy will be solid enough to take friend hacking etc.

I would let a confident novice hack Fudge under supervision on the bridleway with another safe horse to accompany him as is is 99% perfect to hack in company.

I have two friends who I would let ride him in traffic or do fast work or jump. Both of these are vastly more experienced than me and I know they are sensible.

Only myself and my RI school him.

Lady, I let my friends 15 year old ride her as she's ridden her on and off for the last ten years and my sharers ride her under my or my RI's supervision as she is not an easy ride.

Both mine will be angels with a small child or complete novice on the leadrein.

I'm very fussy who I let ride my horses as I've invested a lot of time, effort and money in them and don't want them injured or to be ruined.

I have a show cob, hence I cannot be precious about who rides him - he's been ridden by everything from tiny lady to tall/big man in the ring.
They all ride him much better than me! But then, affiliated judges have to pass stringent tests to be allowed on even the probationary panel.
Mush of my schooling is devoted to my cob giving the best possible ride to ANYONE. I don;t think it's done him any harm.

Only friends who I trust to a) ride him properly, and b) not sue me if he's a tw@t! There's about ... 5 or 6 people, but that's it.

Have been trying to get YM to ride him for aaaaages, but he refuses to get on him lol
tongue.gif

I let anyone ride Blackjack - did a LOT of teaching with people riding him as he was a little superstar - totally voice trained, so people thought that they were doing it, but actually I was! Really good for getting people's confidence, and when they knew they could do it, I'd let them try for themselves. BJ was also ace at working out if a rider was safe. If he was unsure then he'd stop and only move if I went first. I remember having to RUN in front of his canter to get him to do it. Amazing horse.

Only a few people have ridden Mousey as he's so unpredictable and difficult to ride.

At the moment I'm the only one who rides Jazz - owner has specified this. However, my sister has ridden him but came off disastrously when Jazzy tripped over a pole on the ground.

My 3yo isnt broken yet but Id be happy to let whoever ride him when he is - though being a (hopefully) racehorse, its unlikely to be anyone who isnt competent and brave.
With my last filly (who is now racing) a friend of mine and some of his staff rode her a bit in the school for me during the week when I was at college. He is a professional showjumper though and Id have no concerns about any of his riders exercising my horses!

When I had my jumping pony, I loved to watch people riding her - and I loved the fact that they lined up to have a go. She was difficult and everyone told me to get rid of her when I first got her, that she was a waste of time. Hugely talented but came with a lot of issues. Once I had sorted them out, she became a firm favourite with my friends. The guys (2 of whom are international sjers now and 2 professional NH jockeys) used to beg to take her showjumping or even just pop her round the course at home. I did let 2 novices ride her too - the first wasnt a regular rider and pony tanked off in the field - ended up jumping the ditch (double drain!) into the neighbours field and depositing rider! The 2nd guy I had taught to ride over the previous 8 10dyas on my other pony and he begged for a go on Rubes. He rode her around the school and got on really well (if a bit too fast) - but he was a seriously natural rider and had a really good seat.

So - no I would have a problem with anyone really having a go on my horses. Ive only ever drawn the line with one person who was ridiculously rough with his hands. Refused point blank to let him ride my pony ever. A novice with soft hands I wouldn have a problem with. Mind you, the sort of horses I like most novice or nervous riders wouldnt want to get on.

hmmm...i'm another possessive person
shocked.gif
actually that isn't entirely true....my TB- anyone can ride him. he's an ex racer so does need a calm rider but absolutely anyone is welcome to get on him- if they try and manhandle him he'll just piss off with them or be reallynaughty but with nice riders he's really good. he frequently gets hacked out by different people off the yard
smile.gif

my 4 year old...i am very possessive about him. have had lots of people dropping hints about getting in him but TBH i have had no reason to want them to get on- for a start he's cold backed and can turn himself inside out when you get on and wouldn't trust many people to deal with this - i'm used to him now but i'd be gutted if he hurt someone or if they scared him to the point that it made him difficult to get on again (took me about 5 months to sort out). the other reason i have is i don't see the point of getting someone who rides at a similar standard to me on him- what would i gain? i'd rather get a pro on him who would improve him. he's not going to be a show horse so i can afford to be fussy. interestingly neither of my trainers fancy getting on him (because of the mounting) and have advised me to be VERY picky about who gets on him
crazy.gif
have one friend who i trust implicitly- she's evented to intermed and always has tricky horses so hopefully she'll be getting on him soon

Cob: Most people could ride him in the school but he can take off now and again out hacking. Nothing nasty he just gets a bit excited. Easy to pull up within a few strides but would scare a very novice person.

ISH Mare: Very few people. She's sweet but quirky in the school and can easily frighten a rider if they don't realise she's just trying it on (she does her scary horse routine and checks if it's worked). She used to scare me when I had an equally scared instructor but since getting one who just laughed at her antics I'm more confident. Hacking I probably wouldn't let anyone except my instructor as she is not great to hack and is not really that much fun either so sort of defeats the object.

A lot of people I know have ridden Genie (with me there!), as I feel it's good for her to be ridden by lots of people. However the only people who ride her regularly are myself and my sharer.

I admit to being very precious about Rosie as she can be very spooky and easily frightened - because of this, few of my old friends actually want to ride her as they have seen her 'in action'!

She has mellowed over the years, so the 'newer' friends aren't so worried!

But my youngster is far more sensible so I'm happy for any of my friends to ride her though wouldn't want anyone to take her out on their own - only with me accompanying, or in the field.

My horses are precious to me. I make no bones about it.

I've let a few friends ride mine but only under supervision. I've dabbled with share arrangements but I always feel like I can't trust the person when I'm not around, get paranoid and have all sorts running through my head
blush.gif

If I see anyone being rough to a horse, (any horse) or a bit too quick to use their hands or their whip, they will never get on my mare. I didn't spend a year persuading her not to be frightened of her rider for some idiot to undo it within seconds.

Quite a few people these days. Unfortunately, I haven't had a lot of time to ride lately due to work commitments so I've had to ask the yard staff to hack my boy out as much as possible but only when accompanied by the yard manager (she's super sensible).

I'd much rather he was only ridden by me but at least this way when I do get a chance to ride he's still reasonably fit.

Mine is a cob and if he doesn't like someone, he just dumps 'em!! Having said that, he's a very sweet boy if its a novice or someone nervous, he's a real darling and looks after them really well, but if he gets someone on board who thinks they know it all then it gets kinda interesting coz he expresses his displeasure and then its Gawd help them!
