My young horse is potentially being retired long term - curious to see how many people solely, or does a lot of in hand showing?

I have an Arab and i don't like the way they show in hand with the plastic bags and out of control horses so i don't think i would ever be able to take her anywhere other then local riding club shows!

How old is your horse? Veterans start at 15yo so you could do them. You only really see the whip waving and nonsense at Arab group/breed shows not normal shows.

I have done lots with riding horses and thoroughbreds and veterans. As Elf on a Shelf says at most shows you won’t see Arabs being shown that way. They will just be shown as for other horses so go enjoy.

I've done some low level stuff. A year on a pro showing yard soon cured me of any desire to do any proper showing! I do have plans to get the baby highland out this year though, and I've got vague plans to do some bigger affiliated shows with him. Its just such a good thing to do with youngsters

i showed my youngster many years ago and really enjoyed it. it did her the world of good as she got used to the showgrounds and the lorries etc so was traffic proof before i ever got on her. i have shown at county shows and always used to watch the arabs and have never seen the paper bags on sticks etc...i have seen it done on utube and i think it was in america..

The Arab showing at the Royal Welsh was appalling. It's not just in America.

The big county/prestigious shows and Arab breed shows are awful for the flags, whips, chains etc. But your average county show will only have the odd pot hunter showing like an idiot. Sorry Arab people but it is just idiotic!

I stewarded at the Scottish Arab show last year and 9/10 you couldnt assess the horses movement properly because they were flying sideways or cantering everywhere! Then the competitors got annoyed because they didn't win - yes in theory yours might have been the better example of it's breed but if the judge cant see any sort of movement because you are too busy revving the poor creature up then no your not going to win!

And what's with showing them on the end of the line?!!?! The amount of times I wanted to take peoples horses off of them and get them trotting properly was unreal! I stewarded as a favour for a friend. I will not be doing it again for the Arabs.

In hand showing is our hobby we have always shown ours from foals to veterans. I love the prep, yes even the white one in the photo, OH likes the actual showing. Not sure why you are retiring your horse young but if temperament or soundness are the issue in hand wont suit

An exhibitor at the Royal Welsh was hitting the hoardings tied to the ring rail with his long schooling whip to wind his stallion up. Just missed taking my eye out! He then encouraged his horse to go for another stallion, before shanking it so hard it nearly fell over. If I'd have been the judge, I'd have sent him out, but they condone such things.

I show my Arabs mainly ridden but have done in hand, I don't use plastic bags or wind them up unnecessarily not everyone uses these methods, it's mainly seen at the bigger AHS shows, at smaller and not just Arab shows I just show mine like any other horse.

i did used to go to the arab show when it was held in london a very long time ago and didnt see any bad handling at all, definitely no paper bags on sticks, this would have been over 50 years ago so maybe it is a newer thing over here as we do seem to follow the americans with lots of bad habits....:(
