Who does their horses in the dark?

I have no leccy and am in the middle of nowhere.

Massive barn divided into 2 and bedded down. Make up feeds, fill and carry nets across 2 acre field and change rugs in the dark. Have a maglite which I balance on the partition and dogs mooching with me.

I love being out and about in the dark :D the only negative is I can't check properly for any injuries with the torch so do a thorough once over in the mornings.

me, morning in dim light, evening by the light of a headtorch
walk dogs in the dark
sometimes if feels like i live on the dark side of the moon from Oct till March:(

I do, doesnt bother me too much, its just getting light by the time i get to the yard in the morning so not a problem, but is 5.30ish by the time i get there pm. Thankfully my paddocks are the ones closest to the yard, so i just park my car facing the fields and leave the head lights on, use a decent head torch and have no issues, the yard is well lit anyway so not a problem once the horses are in.

I'm generally on my own at night at the yard, and never really thought about someone turning up and scaring me... wonder if i'll get the heebiejeebies tonight after reading this thread!

I don't finish work till 5 and its dark at our private yard and only 2 out of the 3 of us do the evening shift as 3rd girl works till later. we have to unlock all gates and walk down to far end of stable block to fir up the generator for the lights. I use a head torch and yard is in middle of nowhere (i.e if you screamed know one would hear you/come to your rescue). Strangley am fine with it and have a head torch for really dark nights when i can't see to open locks. But yard owner will always sit in her car and wait for me if she arrives before me as she isn't comfortable wandering on to yard in the dark on her own but is fine with company :-)

Get thee a headtorch woman!! makes life so much easier!! :)

I went up the field one night leaving the horses eating from their paddocks by the gate, I went to put hay out and the horses, having finished their supper, ambled down for hay. I went back up to the gate and someone had gathered all the buckets up, taken them & put them by my car.
No sound, pitch black, middle of nowhere.
lol made me er... 'think'

My old yard used a generator that was always breaking down!

I remember once it was about 7pm and I was there alone mucking out and the blooming thing conked out on me. It was so dark I couldn't see in front of my face! still had to make feeds (somehow) and bring in. I was so scared! before we left we had to close these huge gates and lock them (took forever as they were so big) I was so scared I used to go to my car, put the lights on, run back to the yard, turn generator off, run back to gates, open them, run back to car, drive through gates, get out and close gates as quickly as possible (whilst checking knowone was there :o it was a public footpath so occasionly someone would sneak up on you) get in car, sigh of releif, get back out and do the next set of gates and run back to the car! it was in the middle of knowhere and I was usually by myself.

New yard is very lit up and busy :D
