The new boy is a bit on the tubby side! As well as restricting his grazing etc we're not going to rug him unless absolutely nec and then it'll only be a lightweight.

Do you rug though when they're stabled, are stables though are completely draught free so even then I'm not sure it'll be needed xx

Juno is rugless 24/7 365
Meg only wears a rug from late Oct til early march.
Both live out.
Biggles does wear a rug, and he comes in during the winter, but at nearly 29 years old and a TB I think he is entitled to!!
Penny will be naked.

Kelly lives in and wears a m/w stable rug from about mid Oct-early Nov - Feb. Don't tend to bother with a turnout rug nowadays - she still gets dirty and wet no matter what we put on her!!!

We rug the two old ponies and the TB, but the young welshie (can't imagine they rug the ones on the welsh hills and ours has a shelter she's able to get in) and the cob (cos as soon as he has a rug on he pushes through the electric) won't be rugged. They might be brought in at night if we get as much snow as last year but only then.

I almost never do. Our winters are cold and wet here in the Bay Area and my TB's stall has an attached paddock with a door that is never closed. She wore a waterproof rug twice last winter when we had some torrential, cold rain and hail. She was unhappy with it and I think would have been fine without. It was more for me than her.

My daughter's Arab/QH lives out 24/7 and was rugged once. It was during the same storm and he was shivering so we rugged him for about 24 hours. I rugged him again when it was similar weather and he got it off within an hour and was fine so I left him.

I pretty much go by how my horses behave and pretty much only think about it in really harsh drenching rain. If they seem cold or uncomfortable, I will rug. Sometimes sentiment gets the better of me and incidents like the above occur with me rugging and them thinking I'm nuts. :p

My yearling will go out nakey unless its torrentially raining (as she shivers when shes wet but shes fine in the cold). She wil have a very lightweight stable rug on when shes in at night because her box is basically still outside.

I only rug if my horses need it - my tubby Connie X doesn't wear a rug in the stable or in the field, even if it is pouring with rain or pelting down with snow. My others horses sometimes wear rugs when I think it is necessary.

Neither of mine wear rugs - 10yr ID/TB and 22yr welsh c. Both are stabled from Nov - Mar at night but otherwise out all the time. They grow really thick coats and hold their weight on just grass and haylage, no hard feeds.

The only horse I've ever rugged was a 7/8 TB who just did not grow any winter coat and was very thin skinned. He was a total big girls blouse about getting wet.

Nope not rugged any of mine for two years, that includes my foal last winter.and the yearling he will be this winter..although I will have to keep a eye on him he seems a real wuss, loves his stable!!
