Who else is cruel....

Me, I'm not sure pony has ever worn a rug, he may look like a yak but he's a happy yak.

We also have a cattle byre (sans cattle) and good hedging for shelter not that welshies appreciates it.

He's the only one still unrugged on my yard of ten of which two probably need a rug (One to save feeding for condition(the rest of the field are on the porky side)/another as ridden regularly hard enough to justify it for owners convenience) the rest I'm sure would do fine without.

Still owners choice, takes all sorts and what not.

Oh for Christs sake I said it was tongue in cheek on my 2nd post, as two of mine are in fact rugged [As Welsh mare is clipped shock horror, and TB, to save weight loss].

I was just curious what others are in at the moment, alongside it being tongue in cheek over a few amusing comments in real life about it being cruel not having them rugged now it's turned so cold!

The ones being unrugged, shockingly, are cob youngsters [2-3 year olds] who have lived out their entire life and currently resemble fat hairy yaks. I have better things to do, than ruin their natural thermostat, waste money on rugs they don't need and have them overcooking from being too hot with anything with filling or too cold from rain sheets flattening the hair.

The Hunters, my TB, and any clipped...are rugged, obviously.

It's fairly simple, anyone knows that. If it needs rugging, then rug it. If it doesn't, then don't.

So, that being the light humoured point which made me title this thread that, rather than 'What rugs have you put your guys in?'....just my sarcastic sense of humour for the normal tongue in cheek tone HHO tends to have ;)

Gah. I'm off to bed. Been up since god knows what time...had geldings coming out of my ears [not literally, just to clarify]....and currently cranky.

May all horses be warm and happy.

Ok, so maybe it's not gossiping but some who don't rug do tend to have a preaching tone to their posts, "I don't rug my horse so surely anyone who does doesn't need too"

Actually my TB's coat is still finer than a lot of horses summer coat, hence why he is unclipped at the moment.

I think maybe you're taking things a bit personally. ;) I read it as people explaining why they do or don't rug, rather than a criticism of others.

Sometimes a few posters do have a little rant about "over-rugging nowadays" ;) but it's not the whole thread, just one or two expressing an opinion. I still find the thread interesting and don't think it's ridiculous.

One tb has developed (a very slight) winter coat and isn't going above a MW.
One has just changed colour and is in a HW stable overnight and MW turnout.
Section A is in a very thin fleece at night and a LW stable as she is grey and very close to the (muddy) ground!

Really don't see the compition. If I had a cob with thick hair I wouldn't rug either.
And no, rugs aren't a 'marketing ploy'. Many breeds never were in the wild. I could substitute feed for rugs but itd just cost a stupid amount. My horses are happy and that's all that matters :)

I have an IDx, ISH x WB, Clydesdale,Shetland and 2 Cob x WB foals....all are out 24/7 and currently naked. The Clydie and the ID may end up with liteweights on just to keep the mud off as they are the two being ridden.:D
This time last year we has started rugging in MW for any weather under 5c but have elected for nakedness this year unless very very wet and then maybe chuck the liteweights on the ridden ones.

Just to add, these threads are always posted by people that that have cobs

I haven't got a cob - never had and tbh never really want one!

I have a WB. She has been naked so far apart from a rainsheet on very consistently wet and windy days, and she has had a lightweight on the last couple of days simply because she came in absolutely caked in wet mud on a very frosty night and I couldn't tell because of the mud whether she was cold or warm under her armpit).

She has been warm, content, and hasn't dropped any weight at all since the cold weather. Sadly for me!!

I am guilty!

All mine naked and also the 'great fat one' did not get any extra feed last winter - she went into winter far too overweight so had to work hard for her food. It was a wet but mild winer so the grass really didn't stop growing that much.

She ame out of winter looking amillion dollars with a figure that was easy to start work with.

Half and half for me - 2 rugged & 2 naked.

Rugged are a wee native pony:eek: and an arabxwelsh.

Unrugged are a shettie and a threequarter arab:eek:

To each according to their needs.....

(and I am in Scotland, where it is proper cold:))
