Went up the yard this morning to find every one of the 9 horses Freddie shares his field with rugged, needless to say for a split second I felt a bit guilty and mean!

My heinz57 is rugged as he does get cold when wet, but my haffy & mum's cob isn't rugged. I am tempted to rug my haffy as it just hasn't stopped raining since yesterday & he is spoilt, but I keep telling myself he is fine, hardy so doesn't need a rug until clipped :p

Cob is unrugged and will be all winter, he haas a nice shelter. Tb had rug on yesterday for first time as non stop rain but only a 50grm one, he didn't have more than a medium weight on last winter

One is rugged but hes fine coated and i want to hold off clipping as long as poss. My two natives are unrugged in and out aslong they dont get to wet out they will be fine.

i gave in last night as i was in the field with her for 20 mins and had two t shirts two jumpers and a massive coat on and was still shivering so she get her rug on

MY CB Boy is still out naked at night - I too felt guilty for a moment this morning but he was up the top of the field, munching away with his girls, totally unbothered by the weather, so now I don't feel quite as bad...

My boy is unrugged and will stay that way untill he is clipped. However he is still coming in during the day so has chance to dry out. Will change his routine next week so will be coming in at night and out during the day.

Native is unrugged and although looking soaking wet, the undercoat is bone dry. Might bring in tonight though simply because the paddock is standing water and don't want to get it churned up too much, but then I'll be worrying about the trees behind the stable blowing down.

Oldies are rugged when they're cold and one other probably rugged this year. All ours are out in a lovely sheltered field and very hardy little things. If they ever felt cold (normally when wet through) I'd rug, but if as mild as last year they'll all stay out without.

Pan

Ah good! He is out 24/7 with copious amounts of grass and shelter..he has 4 stables that he can go in and out of (but never does!) So I don't feel TOO bad!

Not only are they unrugged they will soon be getting bib or poss bib and belly clips and still be unrugged. The whole winter. They will come in to dry off if they get soaked through as has happened in a week of torrential rain before. They get adlib haylage and hols weight well. Small clip allows us to pootle quietly on weekends but remain unrugged. Both get increadibly hairy do don't get cold unless they get soaked through and come in to dry then go back out.

just looked out my window and Herbs is doing a very good impression of a drowned rat :p He is still technicly rugged because he has his sweetitch rug on ;) Merryn is naked though.
Both my boys are forest bred foresters. Merryns mum still runs on the forest. People who say i'm mean for leaving my boys naked all winter get told. "If you go find Merryns mum and put a rug on her, He can have a rug on to" ;) :p :D :D

Just been down to mine, who are on a track 2 sides of which have mature trees for shelter. Guess where they're stood?! Oh yes on the other side open to all the elements  One looking a little shivery the other fine, moved them some posts so they had more grass and the first one cheered up but couldnt persuade them the other side was more sheltered - im thinking the shelter im a bout to buy is a waste of time......

Sorry had to laugh. Herbie is in the middle of the paddock to. He has trees to stand under but he chooses to be out in the wind and rain

Mine aren't. 23yr old connie x tb & 5yr old mini x (i think) nf. Out 24/7, neither been rugged since spring. Might rug the connie x tb tonight, although hairy she has a long fine tb coat that doesn't offer the same protection as a native coat. Plus she hates cold, so will see how she is tonight. Although plenty of natural shelter due to a wet summer the better grazing is in the exposed parts, so don't want her choosing between shelter & food. The smaller has mainly summer coat but its as water tight as a ducks, so while I'll check, doubt she'll be rugged yet.

My older horse (17yo but starting to feel the cold a bit nowadays) has been rugged for about a month, only in a LW though I did put a neck cover on last night too as torrential rain here. The pony has been rugged since the weekend too.

It's vile out there - I wouldn't go out without a coat so don't expect the horses to!

My section d is unrugged. YO brought them in yesterday evening but normally they are out 24/7 with a field shelter as well as natural shelter from the trees. I was up there very early on Saturday and it was quite frosty - he was toasty out in the field. I find that he's fine with the cold, but eventually the driving rain and wind can sometimes make him shiver. I would rather bring him in for a few hours to dry off rather than rug up though as he will just get too warm.

Mine is in at night now (from yesterday) but not rugged - he was too wet last night and really warm this morning so I didn't put one on. Feeling a bit guilty now but he will dry off again tonight, and he doesn't really get cold. Might put a lightweight on tomorrow morning though.

Rugged in field (rainsheet)- as she is just coming back to work and I need her clean to get saddle on -field is already a mud bath, she came in with her headcollar and muzzle plastered - had to dunk both in bucket of water. Ewwwww

But naked in stable at night as she doesn't need a rug for any warmth yet.

When it dries up again will go back to naked in field - its just we've had very heavy rain and the mud is just awful in field (and she always rolls in it!)

Old pony has a rain sheet on as he's bottom of the herd and gets kicked out of the shelter (but can still get under the trees). Others are unrugged - 16hh appy, 16.2 ISH and the shetland (of course). Determined not to rug until well into October. All are unclipped and can get into stables whenever they like.

Of course if I catch them really shivering then will rug as required.

My 2, 20 yr old cob and 22 year old brat pony are both out naked. They are in a bare paddock at night that has a great big oak tree for shelter, which is where their haynets get tied under. Admittedly, I gave them a couple of extra slices of hay to keep them ticking over in the wet but when I went up, they were stood sleeping right in the middle of the field with their bums to the rain:rolleyes: Until it gets cold AND horrendously wet they go unrugged.
