Had an interesting ride on my pony today, who is clearly feeling the spring grass!!
I spent a lot of time either very collected (think cantering on the spot...) or trying his hand at being a tiny Valegro with his forelegs flying around whilst I was asking for working trot :')

It's not that they're spooky - it's that ALL the mares are in season (well, except the very, very senior citizen) - they are all shouty and squirty and tarty and they are winding some of the boys up (not mine - he may as well be a eunuch!).

Mine is the only boy with a group of 4 mares, thankfully none of them are particularly tarty apart from a little Section A he's not a fan of!

Mine! I was planning a lovely exploring hack this morning. He was laid down early doors when i fetched him in and had a face on him like a smacked bottom the whole time. Didnt want to be tacked up, but agreed that I WAS right and it was fine. Then he wouldn't let me get on. After 10mins of twirling him round the mounting block in the yard I could feel my sense of zen like calm going, so we went in the indoor. I wasnt allowed to get on there either for a good 5 mins. Got on and he was off snorting and snuffling, got stuck by the mirrors while he screamed at them and tried to snog his reflection, got going again and then he launched himself 3 foot in the air over a sun beam on the floor!

I got off! Discretion is the better part of valour! Lunged him for 10 mins, all in turbo cob trot, then got on and off a couple of times in the indoor, in our usual manner, which is stand like a rock with the reins on his neck. Lots of pats and back to the yard where I got on, praised him like he'd just handed me the winning lottery ticket and got straight off and fed him.

Mines 5yr old and does occasionally push the boundaries as he was on loan last year and came back a very different pony :( but I happily ride him as a fat, unfit, disabled rider with no real riding skill left. Today he was wired. It was only as I was making his feed I remembered hed had no magnesium for 2weeks, and the grass is flushing like mad, so that probably explains it!

I feel like we both got a lot out of it, more than if we'd had a lovely relaxing hack, and I'm actually pretty chuffed! Magnesium has been purchased today though

One of the new little pony mares has been HORRENDOUSLY in season for the last week. I finally got fed up with the boys scrapping, so opened up the field to let them all in together, in the hope that the boys would be better behaved with a couple of ladies in residence. I was a bit concerned that Alf might get a bit above himself, as he has a bit of a reputation for being a ladies man, so stuck a headcollar on him, ready to grab if he decided to see if 17.1hh on 11hh was a goer. She sidled up to him, stuck her bottom in his face and squirted at him - and I prepared myself to dive in and save her..

He looked absolutely disgusted, turned his head away and stomped off down the field, muttering under his breath. Not a fan of gingers, it seems!

Yes my horse has been like it for a couple of weeks.
He never needs much of an excuse to leap or spook.
But he's even worse at the moment!

This morning our ride was eventful rather than enjoyable!

Nope!

I went for a hack on bill today (he was last ridden a week ago) and it was glorious :D lovely sunshine, very light traffic and good as gold, we just walked along on a long rein completely happy :D

Then spent an hour de-wintering him & giving him a wash, pulling mane & tail, trimming and basically making him decent & acceptable to be seen in public - which he absolutely loved and spend the entire time sleeping in the sun whilst I got on with it :p he was one very happy boy and he looked MUCH better after his clean up ;)

It's one of the reasons why I love my horse so much - he is just happy to be with you and is up for anything, such a lovely guy :)

Bringing the old git in today I felt more like I was flying a blue and white kite! He put in a few rather large leaps - then was told off so walked the rest of the way snorting and with his eyes out in stalks. At the age of 19 you'd think he'd know better!

Mine. He went adventuring last night (see my thread "he told me he couldn't jump!"). They're both now charging about like loons, play-fighting and strutting their stuff, because the neighbour has put a couple of mares in next to them. Nice to see, but I'm not itching to put a saddle on him right now.

I went for a lovely ride and although a bit spooky at various things she was fine until we started the approach to a stud farm and she started speed walking and calling incessantly for about 10 minutes all I can assume was the stallions were calling back to her and she was very excited at the idea they may meet for some romance, bless her. Once past she then went back to her normal self for the rest of the ride.

Yep, it was like hacking out sat on a bouncy rubber ball today and the slightest movement of my leg was cheekily taken to be an aid to canter - if only the little toad was as good at walk to canter in the school as he was on the grass today!

Yes mine too. In fact today she was running around the field h£ll for leather, like little dogs do. I had a half hearted idea about riding (tho I have ridden two previous days so I was non-committal about today) but when I saw the speed she was going, and the size of the bucks, I thought I would remain 'a pied' tonight. Shes been rather on her toes for the past couple of weeks now.

Up till this eve I had read this thread and felt quite smug - thinking my horse has been fine. Well serves me right then - he certainly wasn't fine on our (consequently very short) hack today. Started out as normal dope on a rope, and then I have no idea what prompted it, whether he heard/saw something I didn't, he started squeaking and snorting, plunging and leaping, trying to take me out under low branches! Oh I do love my neck strap, my horse not so much right now!

I had a better day today, no issues with tacking up or getting on, but he was still on fire hacking out! HGVS flying past, no issue, but a man on the other side of the road was a horse killing monster

My usually calm but forward going cob napped, spooked and snorted his way up the road, as he was so full of energy I added an extra loop of ride on, would have been a shame to waste all that vavavoom.

Aaaaaggggggg spring grass that means that my other lad Moses is growing AGAIN! When will he stop! :(

We are in Autumn but it is even worse than Spring this year! Drought followed by the perfect mix of rain and sun has made for awful lush grass that is growing like the clappers.
I've spent more than a few nights supervising as they are tearing around the paddock for no apparent reason. Luckily the worst to happen is one getting T-boned by another, but both walked away unharmed. My pinto has been on paddock rest after an injury. Brought her in for the first time in a few weeks and she was bucking on the end of the leadrope! That's new! Luckily she is unfit so it didn't last long.

My share horse was so excited to be out the other day that he dragged me down the lorry ramp, then launched himself from it... sideways.. We did have a fabulous lesson though, after I swore at him and felt like an idiot for being unable to stop him. I have handled many spritely and rude horses in my time, but this isn't the first occasion this 21 year old has made me look silly!!

Yep, the pony that normally makes seaside donkeys look sprightly, and is afraid of nothing has turned into a coward! A wheelbarrow caused him to nearly faint, which normally he would push over, got into the school and everything was worth gawping at... when is spring grass officially over?

Mine has two different modes at the moment - super sleepy and complete fool.

Sleepy mode is a pain because I can't get much sense out of him. Foolish mode is just as useless because I still get nothing!

Kali had a photoshoot yesterday and I was a little worried that he wouldn't have enough left in the tank after L rode him (tog wanted action shots) - needn't have worried - he galloped around the arena throwing some impressive shots. Tog got what he wanted in the first two minutes!

He did rather a lot of this:

Part of me was really happy to see him enjoying himself - but rather a lot of me was really worried about him hurting himself/reinjuring that darned leg!

He was an angel today.

I daren't say too much just yet as had a good schooling session tonight and am competing on Weds so don't want to jinx it...he apparently threw in some bucks out hacking last week...on a walk hack I am somewhat bemused as he rarely does it even when full on revved up! Touching wood!

This is charlie the last few days! So frustrating as all has been well since he came back from schooling, time for the muzzle and stable I think! As don't want him getting porky either 😊

I officially hate spring grass, hack stated off fab, lovely relaxed rein, had a little snooze whilst we stopped to chat to someone en route. spotted his first major clump of dock leaves blowing in the wind and we were across the other side of the road before I knew it! carried on our merry way and made him trot in the hope it would wear him out, no such look, despite me asking for flexion the other way his eyes were permanently scanning the hedges looking for monsters, calmed a little when we got to a quieter road although he was jig jogging trying to keep up with our hacking buddy.
all going well until we met a man with a wheelbarrow and we shot across the road again, spooking hacking buddy who is totally sane!
headed for home at a bit of a jig jog, passed a big yellow bradfords lorry parked on the verge with no issues, nearly at our junction to turn for home and big yellow lorry is thundering up behind us! trotted on to move out of the way and as if he hadn't spotted it flew forward then decided to trot sideways down the road, but the minute we turned off he was as calm as anything again! passed the nasty dock leaves and he went to spook but by this point I was pretty fed up of his antics to kicked him on and told him to get on with it and he duly behaved the rest of the way home! he is now OFF the lush grass and back in the rough paddock, little monkey!

Mr B was getting a bit full of himself but I've turned him out, pretty much 24/7 for the past couple of weeks. He's been on a forage only diet + balancer for about 6 months but now is pretty much on a grass diet as he just wants to rest when he has time in his stable. He is so relaxed! I've even had to pick up a whip for a couple of minutes when schooling, which is unheard of as he's such a forward going horse. I haven't touched him with it though, just seeing it out of the corner of his eye is sufficient to get him in front of the leg. I'm not sure he's as keen as I am on this "out 24/7" lark but it certainly put paid to a bit of spring silliness.
