Find a quiet road and take horse and bag of carrots in halves. Needs to be big enough to be seen around the horse eating grate 
Walk to grate, if stopping a long way back stop and back up a step or two and then aim for one step in direction of. Carrot if does if not just stand til they at least look at it. Rub as reward for lookig and try again for step.
Keep going till relatively close. Place large piece of carrot on manhole - see what happens.
Only down side is if there is every something on a grate now mine does an emergency stop to see if the carrot fairy has been out again
