Thinking of switching my boy to haylage this winter, from hay. I have heard it can turn horses loopy - please tell me this is rubbish?!

sorry but it does have an affect on my daughters arab x welsh pony, she gets quite silly when she has it :-/
I think it does depend on which one you use, my local feed shop make their own haylage and it seems to be drier and not quite so pungent as the one we used before but she's only had it twice so couldn't say if it really affected her or not.

Mine are on horsehage.

This comes in different protein levels, and I feed the lowest one. Its more expensive that locally available haylage, but I want to be sure of the nutrition level (ie not send them loopy). I've also seen some grotty local haylage.

I do know of horses that get the squits on haylage.

Hi as you say there are different levels of feed value in haylage and it's wise to have a word with your supplyer and tell them about your horse, they should then be able to put you right on which one to try. Both my horses are on haylage and neither of them are ridable so it was very important to get it right if you have a look on Lincs forage web site it will give you all the information you need about haylage. Mine have been on it for years and they look fab and have stayed sane, hope this helps

I feed haylage to all mine, 2 shetlands, cob and tbx. I keep them at home and done have storage for hay. A small round bale lasts me 10 days. Mine are all fine with it

My horse is fine on it. He cannot have rich haylage as it runs straight out of him! He cannot cope with the large round bales, he cannot have hay so he has blue horsehage.

Mine are on haylage. They live on a farm that mass produces it.

I give my two the leisure type but there is an active one. Both my two natives are fine on it. They love it in fact they will leave their dinner to get to the haylage.

mine are worked 6 days out of 7 and are happy and fairly sane.

All mine are on it - small bale in the summer and large bale in the winter. Have used various different types and none have caused them to go loopy or given them the squits!

it depends on the type of haylage you feed.

the yard i am at makes 2 different types of haylage- 'happy hacker' and 'racehorse rocket fuel.'

if you are really concerned feeding haylage from last season works well in most cases although mine are fine on any sort of haylage; i just cut/increase the hard feed to suit.

I feed local haylage (did use blue horsehage but it was v expensive and I had a run of vile smelling ones, just like nail varnish remover and got got fed up of lugging them back to the agric store). Its not caused loopiness in our two and it is fab never tohave to throw away bad parts of bales of hay, choke on the dust, soak nets etc etcetc.
I tend to give the big chap the new stuff from the small wrapped bale (30kg ish) and then his leftovers go to the Haflinger girlie who is very happy with that!.
Big chap cant cope with hay after a recurring virus causing colic and choke, so its great to know he is safe with the haylage. He also doesnt drink enough so nice as the haylage is damp. It didnt cause any poo changes except his are now nice instead of hard bullets :-)

If in doubt start with the high fibre blue horsehage little bags and then try cheaper less well known ones once you are happy no explosions result. After all, hays only cheap if you never have to chuck any of it like you dont with haylage...
