Who feeds their good doers just hay and a feed balancer?

Grass or haylage. Pony nuts as an emergency catching treat or sprinkled on stable floor (about a snatched handful) to come in to so they 'like' to be back in bed. Otherwise nowt. Come winter, in really bad weather when they can't get out, Dengie Hi-Fi Lite and a bit of Spedi-Beet for succulence to replace grass. And nowt else but those Himalayan salt lumps. Fit as fleas...

Yup mine gets a haynet at night, grazing during the day then a handful of HiFi Lite, some garlic and some carrots once a day! He's a welsh D and is in good weight and looks really shiny and healthy.

To the people who feed balancers, what do they do? do you notice a difference if you don't feed them? Thanks!

Ours are out 24/7 and not having any hay at the moment as we have tons of grass. When they need it they have hay, Top Spec Anti Lam and a small amount of Top Chop Lite chaff. They have access to Himalayan salt licks all the time.

Jango we feed a balancer because all of our horses are good doers so are on restricted grazing most of the time. The balancer makes sure they are getting all the vitamins and minerals that they need. We started feeding balancers 6 or 7 years ago and our horses all do well on it so I've never stopped feeding them it.

Another "cruel" owner here who only feeds hay when in overnight (horse is left out as long as possible) and has only ever bought one bucket of feed balancer in the 12 years I've owned him... and yes he's still alive!

All mine get the same balancer all year round and hay in the winter. They also get a handful of hi fi senior. We have 2 shetlands, a cob x and a tb x

I started mine on it when he was on box rest and I instantly noticed a different in him, he been less grumpy on it than he did on a cooling mix. When back in full work I changed him back to his old feed and he was sharp and got grumpy. So put him back on Lo Cal and much happier. He has been on it for 8months and everybody comments on how well and healthy he is. The bonus is He doesnt pile on the weight either.
