Who gallops their horse just for variety in what you do?

I do it all the time! I do use it for fitness, but I don't tend to follow a strict fitness plan... and my old boy would kill me if I DARED to take him on a hack that didn't invlove at least one damn good pipe opening stonker of a gallop!

Exactly what I was thinking. You mean there're people out there who see lovely big stubble fields, or long clear grassy stretches and DON'T blast round it as fast as you can, just for the hell of it? :o

I choose life! Riding a horse that trips so badly in walk makes me really worried about fast work.

I would to just gallop but the ground can be as smooth as a mill pond and Jazzy will still come down :(

I have, however, found that going up a steep hill is safer for him and have been brave and cantered him up the hill.

It's a good feeling :D

Oh God yes! There is nothing like a good gallop and you don't realise quite how much you miss it till you have a good one after a really long break!

There is no where decent to gallop around my yard the best we have is laps of the PC grounds but then due to having to turn you can never really pick up decent speed.
One of the best gallops I have ever had was on an endurance, set off and there was a group of us, about 8 kids all about 14-16, on superfit, stuffed to the eyeballs arabs - we walked chatting over the dunes hit the beach and it was a group decision (on behalf of the horses we were pretty much passangers) to do the next 10km at top speed, before we left the beach again and went back to walking and talking :)
Not quite how you are meant to do it but we had a great time :D
