Who hacks out and who doesn't - why?

I do both and try to hack at least twice a week, if I don't my mare gets really crabby, it's also been superb for her getting used to tractors and other large vehicles. I now have a neighbour who's just got an Arab (gorgeous) and we have started to go out more regularly.

I like to do a bit of everything, love hacking and watching the horses bravery increase with each new challenge. Its pure pleasure when your horse is able to go anywhere, pass anything without fuss and be well mannered to ride.
Its nice for the horse too, when being domesticated limits them to a few acres to move around in, being able to enlarge their territory with hacking must in some way help the instinct to travel and roam.
I've particularly noticed how when riding at sunrise and sunset, horses (mares esp ?) seem to enjoy exploring, and those moments standing still on a horizon watching a sinking sun with their ears pricked forwards, seem special moments of oneness between rider and horse.

I DO! :D and completely love it, you can't beat a good gallop across the common and trotting along country lanes :) Personally I find schooling a bore :P

I do both. I try to hack at the weekend and the days I have off college because when Im at college its too dark by the time I get home so I can only school, I was hacking out every day before the clocks changed as I knew we wouldnt be able to do as much. I love it its been great for my boy he has grown in confidence loads and it has really helped to get him fitter so he now finds schooling easier so it benefits us both :D it has also helped with his schooling as I can open and close his canter easier on a hack now and Im sarting to get walk to canter without trot inbetween out hacking now :D
