I am pondering moving my gelding. For the past 6 years (since buying him) he has been kept on a farm 5 mins from home. There are just a couple of owners and currently 5 horses. We pay the measly sum of £8.50/week(!), the grazing is good, stables are huge 15x15 pens.
The major downside is lack of riding. Tis pretty much all roadwork, fairly busy roads too, and one bridlepath a good mile or 2 away.
I hoped originally to find some land & stables to rent but cannot find any locally for now. In response to an ad for this, a lady has rung offering a space on her yard. She is offering assisted diy(which I have never had before) - so 5 mornings a week she will feed, rug change & turnout. He gets his own paddock if wanted and all year turnout. Floodlit menage and own storage area etc.
She also has great off road riding and access to bridlepaths.
Have decided to visit yard and see it in the flesh but I'm already getting tempted! Its going to be a massive change though, this yard is half hour away from me & charges £35/week - this sounds reasonable for the services provided but wanted to check with you lot anyway?!

So have many people moved to yards further away from home purely for better riding/facilities? Has it worked out? Am I just thinking the grass is greener??
Having been nowhere else I am slightly scared of moving really, but can't help but think how much nicer it would be to have fields to ride on instead of roads!:)

Hi I moved yards from 5 minutes away to half an hour away for facilities, the new yard has everything I could want, you get used to the travelling and I try to keep the trips to the yard to once a day, it just become the norm, go for it you can always move back if you leave on good terms

I moved from my old yard to new one still only a small yard but again more expensive but better facilities and hacking and like your offer YO either turns out or brings in and does rugs/breakfasts etc. thats where my oldie is now on retirement and shant move hopefully unless my mums future house has some land!! It was further away too but i found it much better and spent more time with him as had much more to do hack/school/play around in fields!!
The others are kept on their owners land as i just loan them and she has a flat field and some nice hacks would love to move them to where oldie is as soo much potential that can only be seen on a dry day when field able to be used. Im sure moving would be for the best aslong as financially you cna afford it as thats a larg difference!!

hiya, i moved from a diy yard which i was half an hour away which had an indoor school to a yard that was assisted that was 10 mins away but had no indoor school.

i found it hard at first put the horses in/out etc and i am a bit of a freak about it being MY horse lol and liking to know what is happening to her. It has made such a huge difference to me though, no more early mornings or speeding down the motorway at night worrying about Amber being out in the pouring rain!

I am loving it now i have more time to spend with my horses! Good luck if you move
