Just wondered how many of us have equines that we would be unable to sell on if we chose too.My daughter has a 13h sec b which was, I believe totally mis sold. The mare was advertised as first ridden lead rein, and upon first impressions this is how she appeared. However 4 yrs later it appears she is anything but:eek:....we traced her 2 other owners, one the breeder and one an adult who competed with her, and their impression of her was totally different. There is though a happy ending, my teenage daughter can now sit a buck , has an incredible seat:D .Being thrown in at the deep end has brought her riding on ten fold.We have a child sized pony who thinks shes a horse,if we ever re -advertised her she would be, forward going, sharp mare.Likes to go fast , loves to jump very high, clears 3ft with ease and will be any clock Ridden in pelham as needs brakes , but will go in a snaffle if stopping isn,t an issue. Will buck in canter and tank off if rider isn,t confident .Loves to be hormonal and needs a confident experienced rider. However, loads like a dream, comes to call, and loves the farrier. We could never sell her...I can,t think a child could have her and my daughter wants to keep her for life.

Me! When I took her on I knew all this and old owners asked for first refusal if I ever can't look after her anymore so won't be selling her but basically shes mad, hyper, Arab trapped in a welsh pony body, prone to random rearing and bucking fits .. Laminitic, stifle problems, bad teeth and prone to stress colic .. But I love her!! :D

me, every one of my horses have an issue...
Orion, has recurrent uveitis, heart issue(arterial fibilation), arthritis in coffin and hip, value to anyone nil, to me, priceless,,,,,
Ali, 19 years old, and although looks well, will likely slow down considerately, as is showing his age, value nil, to be millions, had him for 16 years

Yep I did. he was a teenager with several injuries/health issues and couldn't compete, but could hack or do the odd fun rides, also NOT a novice ride. Luckily for me my friend had him and I still see him all the time:D

I have a tb with navicular.. he hasn't been properly ridden for 8 months and still isn't 100% sound, we havn't given up on getting him back in work but looking like he might be a large lawnmower, he also doesn't hack so couldn't be sold as a happy hacker and can be a pig to loan and ride if hes in that frame of mind!!

Yep, I had a gelding that was pretty much the male twin of OP's mare, and I now have Melly - In my sig - has handling, confidence and ridden issues, sets her neck and bolts when ridden, she is great to handle if you are confident, but will walk all over someone unconfident, and can be agressive if the handler is to her. She has bone spavin, chronic low grade lami, weight issues (but negative IR tests, yet to cushings test) and pelvic problems. She is both worthless and priceless, I love her so much my heart aches.
My little mare is a delight, but she is quirky and have a wave on her teeth that requires more regular dental checks. Her foal is 8 months now, Im hoping she is the most saleable of them all, or im screwed!!!! :)

Well, I don't think my mare is unsellable I just need to find a genuinely competent and confident person for her instead of daydreaming numpties whom I cannot sell her to in all good conscience because I would worry about my immortal soul (and lawsuits-look at that recent DM article) . She's good looking, she is sound, she has potential, in the right hands she is very easy to do, but she is quirky to ride and that's not going to change because you wave some crystals at her or whatever. I would also consider giving her as a broodmare but only to someone with a credible and concrete plan, who has done their research and whom I believed had the money to back it up. I would give her to the right person.

eta as for our Basil, we have just found he is beginning to be very slightly arthritic through his hocks, not enough to stop him from doing anything at the sort of level we do but probably would effect his value, and it needs management so I would have to know the person I sold him to was going to do that for him rather than just rant him about because he'd do so without complaint.

Iv got a ex racer who's had 2 ops on his breathing but still can't breath out off a trot but i love him and will live his life out with me after all where would a horse like that end up? His temperment makes him worth keeping as a light hack.

I have a lovely kwpn mare whos movement makes me want to cry its so beautiful and who I've jumped 1m30 on effortlessly. She is a lamb to handle, in fact my completly unhorsey OH often changes her rugs, brings her in and turns her out without issue.
Other days she refuses a 2ft cross pole, bucks like hell on the flat and tries to buggar off at any given oppertunity, has chased my livery mate in the field then spun and tried to double barrell her, threatens the other horses over the fence and would happily drag you along on your face when being led and rears in hand :/
I love her very much and, believe it or not, we have overcome ALOT of issues but her pure inconsistancy means I could never sell her in case she ended up in the wrong hands (she has clearly been in them at some point). I'd honestly worry about her hurting someone :(

We have a selection- take your pick!
1x TB chestnut mare (true to character), ex polo pony. Spooks, can be grumpy, nice hack but at 20 probably not worth anything. Out on loan to someone who likes the fact she's a grumpy so and so! Apparently she kicked the farrier the other day! No doubt he yanked her leg up in a particular way which she doesn't like! :o

1x ISH ex eventer, who won't show jump anymore, but will hunt- lovely hunter if you don't mind the pulling and the need to be right by the field master. Jumps anything though. Much admired because of it. Thankfully I am an adrenaline junkie and like to be at the front. Otherwise we wouldn't get on! He's 18. I was offered a large sum for him the other day though, but they don't know his lack of wanting to jump anything but a hedge!

1x Argentine polo pony- had a sacroiliac joint injury. Mended now- we shall see if he can return to polo and then be sold. If he can't due to the injury he won't be sold as he doesn't do anything but polo. Is a nice polo pony though!

We collect old/crippled/semi-retired horses clearly...Thinking of setting up some sort of charitable home! paha. Lucky for them my dad doesn't buy horses to make money out of them. First 2 mentioned were bought to keep. Chestnut we've had for 16 years, and the second is my first horse and dad loves far too much to sell!

The pony we bought as my girls first pony. A 13:2h pocket rocket bought because she seemed 'boring' when they walked round on her at first viewing. She's sharp, fast, excitable & bucks her way round SJ or XC courses & PC rallies but she's incredibly kind & looks after wobbly younger children - will do a 1ft SJ course on the leadrein in a smooth slow trot and sticks her head up if child ends up on her neck & stops if they fall off. Doesn't travel. Needs restricted grazing in summer but becomes an unexploded bomb if not mostly out. Has taught my girls to sit a buck, ride properly & the importance of understanding / building a partnership with their ponies. She's currently on child number 3. Would have been passed on to child number 4 only child number 3 won't give her up. On paper she's pretty rubbish as a first / second pony but to us she's priceless.

Me too - Arab x WB - on the ground she is the sweetest thing, you can sit under her whilst she eats, tap her leg for her hoof, clip her without being tied up, get on, do your stirrups, girth, get your self ready, 10 minutes of warm up .... then she turns into a loon! everything has to be done at 90mph (ex speed jumping pony) so the sound of a horn, touch of a leg, gather of the reins and she's off, stubborn, doesn't listen, zones out, switches off, you can't school her with jumps in the school, i was told i couldn't take her hunting as the huntsman doesn't like to be overtaken! luckily i managed to find her a long turn loan home with an ex jockey who's yard has access to bridleway with no roadwork involved! She's now 23 and hasn't changed!

I have some that are "unsellable" but not because they have anything wrong with them but because they will never be for sale. Some are in their 20s and 30s and have been good horses so have a home for life. Others are very special to me so I couldn't let them go. I like my horses to "be in saleable condition" which means healthy and sound. Heck even my broodmares are all totally sound and ridden occasionally because I personally wouldn't breed from a lame mare. I have 2 horses with mechanical issues, 1 is loaned out because a friend fell in love with him and they wanted a companion horse. The other, another friend has been desperately trying to get me to give to her but I have a strong attachment to him so I'm not sure I could have him live away from here. Maybe one day but not yet.

My TB is unsellable.
At 9 years old he was diagnosed with KS, navicular, PSD, litic lesions throughout much of his skeleton (holes in the bone), and arthric joints. This is what happend to a horse that is going to grow to become 17.2hh when you race it as a 3 year old

I think there are very few horses who are unsellable due to behaviour issues, it just may take longer to find a competent enough rider/handler.

My old boy is unsellable because he's a 22yr old one eyed mildly arthritic idiot who is now pretty much blind in his remaining eye. He's also a grumpy so and so, won't hack on his own (he never has, even when he could see) and needs a lot of food in his old age. However, I wouldn't change a thing about him, he's with me till the end.

My unsellable one is rising 19, nappy, throws bucking fits and likes to spin, was very ill with gastric ulcers a few years ago and now retired, have owned him since he was 2 and never tried to sell because I knew he would probably just go from home to home. Was a successful jumper in his prime but no fun to ride at home lol! Now happily mooching about living a happy relaxed life.

Me! I have one with navicular and an old shoulder fracture, she is a wonderful horse to ride and have around but I'm certain she isnt saleable! Oh well, I feel lucky to have her and would never part with her anyway :)

I have 2 :o both will only leave me feet first :D One has a kissing spine the other is very elderly. Luckily I like them both a lot

I have a horse that is apparently unsellable, 16.2, gelding, quiet as a lamb to handle, has taught complete novices, snaffle mouth, never bucks, rears or bolts, loves his schooling but a little nervous hacking alone.

Been advertising him for ages and can't sell him :(

I have a 16.3 rising 5 year old WBxTB mare with bilateral bench knees. I very much doubt anyone would buy her, but I bred her and will keep her forever anyway - so I don't care!!! :p

:p:p...thanks for all your replies...its re assuring to know were not the only ones.Particularly nice to know were not the only ones with issues:rolleyes:.Flozza has taught my daughter so much, never had to kick kick kick :D...never used or seen a crop:D...gentle squeeze and a firm seat and your off:eek:...people have seen her in the field bucking , broncing and galloping hell for leather and shook their heads at her , but she,ll come up to my daughter licking and chewing and walks like a donkey in -hand...most of the time:rolleyes:......I could,nt bring myself to sell her on and my daughter would,nt let her go either....so shes here for life ,hoping my daughter stops growing :p

I have one I wouldn't sell, have had her 19 years, now nearly 24 and has cushings, as someone else posted she will leave me feet first, if anything was to happen that I could no longer keep her I will have her PTS, currently she is still being an old bag and is teaching the children how to sit on and respect a horse (you don't get angry with her unless you want a close up of the floor, and only have a justified confrontation with her if you are confident of your point!!!!)
I think the problem now is that there are quite a lot of people that have horses without the first clue how to look after/deal with them (I'm a fluffy bunny hugger to a point, but my horse has manners when being dealt with), so if you have a horse with quirks you're constantly worrying if it would be sold to the right home or if it would end up being passd pillar to post getting worse each time.
We have a pony on loan from another HHO member who she has said she will never sell, he is rather grumpy in the stable but really makes up for it when the kids ride him, think he would be the classic example, this is not a pony that you could discipline for the grumpiness a it makes him worse, he came to us with us knowing the full story behind this horses quirks they were never hidden from us, but if he was to be sold and it was someone that thought they could 'fix' the biting etc he would get worse and worse which would then most likely end with him being sold on and on until he was on the scrap heap.
There would be homes out there (like ours) that it would be safe to sell to, however you don't really know who you are selling to and once sold there's not a lot that can be done if you don't like how they are dealing with the quirks. Our loan pony isn't far from his owner and they are always welcome to come and visit him and know that he is being treated with respect, but if they had sold him they probably wouldn't have that option.

I sold Danny and he came back 3 days later after putting two girls in hospital and trying to double barrel the father... I had warned them about the bucking and his attitude when he's testing you out (but apparently top event riders know best...!)

I had broken my hand in the interim and had it pinned back together (loading issues with another horse...) I got on him the day he came back and went for a hack holding the buckel with one hand, other arm in a sling. We walked around a stubble field in horizontal rain with phesants flying at us. He didn't bat an eyelid, flinch or try to buck...

Little darling... It's our 10 year anniversary on the 2nd November!!

Not that I would sell him anyway, but have been looking for a rider (im going overseas for a while) and the bloody horse just doesn't go well for anyone! Not that he tried to kill them, but he'll stop at jumps even with 1.50m riders, he won't go forward, he won't come round etc etc...is totally unsuitable for a nervous rider because he has a buck and a half, and can rear too and has mini explosions. Will take advantage of nervous riders, and won't offer good work, it has to be asked for firmly...so not "unsellable" but difficult I think.

i have a 12hh pony that i have had since i was 10 years old( Im now 26)
His known as the kiddie Killer!! i have done everything on him mounted game, Showjumping , cross country and polo x! you do everything at a hundred miles per hour.ive decided he either likes you or he dont! his impossible to catch and will bite you for the fun of it! tacking up and rugging up is a mission..... at 20 years of age he has now retired from mounted games due to hock injury but vet vet said he would benefit from being a happy hacker! After having a 3 month holiday the time came to start hacking again! lets just say itis very exciting! whenever i hit grass he does crazy fly leaps and god forbid i see horses in the distance! im quite big on him now and would love a child to ride him as long as i tacked up...... he wont have it full stop! as soon as they hold the reins her knows!

i get comments when im out riding.... your a bit big for that pony? as i go jogging down the road sidewards... i always ask if they would like there child to ride him and they soon say no...."

i just dont think he is a childs pony!
Even getting someone to change to change his rug or get him in for the day is impossible so i dont i will ever manage to sell him.

will stay with me till the end xxx
