Who has a toy dog? chihua, chinese crested etc?

I am going to get 2 dogs next year... i particularly (sp) like chihuaua's (sp) and chinese cresteds, i also like pomerians but i think they are a bit too hairy for my taste. has anyone got any pics or their dogs? im interested in small breeds only as dont have a lot of room. my friend has a hairless crested and i adore her but i also like chiuhaua's too so im still quite torn!

I don't have a toy dog, but I do have a small dog (Boston Terrier, 18lbs). She isn't as rowdy as a lot of Bostons, so I let her play with the teensy breeds at the park. From my observations, I like:

Papillons. They are incredibly smart (up there with Labs, believe it or not). If DH would let me have another dog, I'd get one of these.

Pomeranians. I've met sweet ones and nasty ones. Very cute, though.

Brussels Griffon. Funny little faces, but they have such sweet personalities. Very playful and inquisitive. I think they're adorable.

Chihuahuas. I don't know whether this is necessarily true, but the long-haired chis seem a bit more relaxed.

Whatever you do, the key with a small breed is not to mother them and actually let them behave like a dog. I see plenty of people with these dogs on their knee/in a bag, and it brings out such a nasty guarding instinct.
 
Thats interesting about the short vs long haired breeds!

i have about 3 maybe more months before i can get one so ive got plenty of time to consider all breeds carefully.

dont worry i wont mother them i havent enough hands to carry them and everything else

I absolutely LOVE chiuhaua's!!! I really want one, but aren't they really expensive, like £1,000 each??

I love the Short haired ones as i know one and she is just lovely, im def going to get one when i have some money going spare!
 
they are really really expensive arent they!! probably a lot to do with them being an 'in fashion' type of dog i guess? i am still torn though between a chi and a chinese crested. i really like both dogs and have 'met' a few of each and both have been such lovely lovely animals. i also like cavaliers, which are also quite expensive. i think i have expensive taste in dogs!! my sister had an afghan X spaniel and he was the coolest dog in the world bless him, but i find big dogs a bit too much for me x
 
god id be well and truly poor then!!!!

i will consider this...although my friend may get a crested one day and i see her a lot...

and apparently a lot of chi's dont mix well with other breeds unless you get them from a puppy
 
What about an Italion Greyhound? They are like minature Whippets so are really fine coated and hardly shed at all.

I would love one myself but I already have two whippets and apparently IGs can be quite manic when they have a whippet to run around with and can end up exhausting themselves with excitment (so the breeder told me).

They are gorgeous though - I always spend at least 1/2 hr at their stand at Crufts.

One of the beauties of living in NYC is that I think I've met every single dog breed there is, including some that sound made-up (Alapaha Blue Bulldog or Tibetan Ridgeback, anyone?).

Anyhow, Iggies are definitely very sweet, and they love to play constantly. Here's a picture of my Boston zooming past a very perplexed IG (in his jim-jams no less

So, I have a Chinese Crested - a hairless one.
She`s not "everybody`s darling"-but mine :-))
You won`t have problems with the skinny dog, they will normaly need no pullover or other stuff. Chinese Crested will only love the owner, and they are very good house-guards.
The tiny dog is handling with my Irish Wolfhounds, it`s funny.
 
Do not get a chihuaua (sp?) if you want to stay sane for longer than a week! Had ours for about 3 months...just wasn't suited to us (really didn't like him!) so he went to my grandparents - spent most of the time nipping grandad whenever he went near gran or falling in the swimming pool (the ickle one)

That is just one though. I'm sure there are...a few out there who are nice, but I am yet to meet one.

Tuppence is 2.2hh - or 10 inches - at the wither, she weighs approx. 9lbs. She is NOT a pure bred and therefore has a relatively longer life expectancey, as she is less likely to have genetic disorders etc..... She is a Jack Russell x Yorkshire Terrier and she ROCKS!!!! We have had many, many dogs over the years, Labs, Spaniels, Pointers, JRT's, Yorkies, Setters, Border terriers, Retreivers etc..... and she is by far the most intelligent and humorous dog we've ever had. A HUGE plus is that she's not a hair shedding dog! I practically had an arguement, with a lady at an Agricultural Show the summer before last, who was a breeder of Australian Silkies and she swore blind that Tuppence was one - until I lifted her up and showed her, her white chest - kinda gave the game away

......ARGHHHH !!!!!!! NOT TRUE FOLKS .... I do get so sick of hearing this ( sigh) .... anyway to get back to the topic Toy breeds can be VERY hard to toilet train and the males have a definite tendency to spray everywhere. They can also have a marked tendency to guard their owners and although some folk may find this cute it's really just as unacceptable for a Chi to bite as a Rottie ! ( just causes less damage

Expect to pay around £1200-1500 for a Chihuaua slightly less for some others - the reason their prices are so high is that they have very small litters and the breeders tend to keep the bitches so only dog pups are usually available. the exception are Cavaliers who are more substantial and have larger litters ( not really a toy breed but a variety of Spaniel ) Please only go to good breeders who do all the reccommended health testing and socialising - you can expect your toy breed to live for upwards of 18 years so a big investment at first but they do out live the bigger breeds.

My colleague's Puggle (Pug/Beagle) is going into surgery this weekend to correct a luxating patella, to the tune of $1500. Conversely, my Boston Terrier was genetically tested for the condition and has knees a rugby player would be proud of

Anyway, I just want to say it's a pity you don't live where I do. Chihuahuas are one of the top breeds in rescue in NY; there's literally hundreds of them on the Petfinder website for homeless animals

Sorry -- wrong! Hybrid vigour is a complete myth. It only comes into play when you cross two unrelated species i.e a horse and a donkey.

The health of a dog depends on the parents, purebreed or not. Besides, I'm with my (very) reputable vet on this one: creating more mutts, when the shelters are full of them, is downright irresponsible.

both of my dogs are 'mutts' and all the dogs my family circle has ever owned have been 'mutts' bar a couple of labs.
none of the crossbreeds have ever needed the vets for anything other than accidents. i love my mutts.
 
Grr, calling other people's dogs mutts it just wrong. Makes me very annoyed!!

Moving on, I have a yorkie and a cavalier.

Yorkie is very hyper, very loving but was a bit snappy before he got the snip! (I think he may be been mistreated as a tiny pup- I got him at six weeks because his 'breeder' was going to drown him!

) he has a huge sense of humor, a massive play drive but can be a bit of a wimp at times!

Rue sleeping!

My Cavvy is so sweet and gentle. I adore him! He is very much a lap dog, and loves people. He's quite fussy about what he eats, and always has been. Again, very playful, loves biting Rue's tail to get him to play!

I'm with Milor on this one.First crosses are not more healthy then purebred dogs, in fact they are more prone to illness because they have the potential to inherit negitive traits from two breeds.
On the whole, I have found purebred dogs much better health wise.Their breeders are aware of potential faults and test their dogs to try and eliminate them, not something that happens with crosses.Its always been the crosses that have had to go to hte vets every other week, hardly ever had trouble with the pure dogs- but that is just my expreiance, I'm sure plenty of us on here have found it the other way around(which just goes to show a bit of mportant too).
I would LOVE to see the end of crosbreed dogs, NOT becasue I dont like them(have had a couple that were cracking family dogs) but because they are more likely to end up in rescue/bad homes- a pedigree cert doesnt garentee a good life but far more crosses are in shelters then purebred dogs.

Prose, "mutt" is VERY derogatory, not everyone wants a certain breed, not everyone can affored the high outlay for certain breeds.Crosses DO have a place, please dont put them down becasue they are not to your taste.

ETS, I almost have a yorkie. He became very snappy when my son was born so went bac to live with my mother( not a bad move for him, he had lived there with me when he was a pup and likes the quiter atmosphere now he is getting on abit!).
He is now 12 and still a pup at heart- even if he does need to go for a lie down after a play session,lol.
Yaps a lot, can be snappy with strangers(not a biter, just warns them to keep away) and is protective of his person but has a real terrior heart, will run for miles and play for hours.
If I could be sure to get another one like him I would have another in a heartbeat, cant stand lapdogs though!

Apologies. Though British, I live in the US and that's what people call crosses here.

Crosses are what I grew up. I also volunteer at a shelter where about 80% of the dogs are mixes. What I object to VERY strongly is the breeding of crosses for profit and giving them a silly name i.e. puggles, bugs, chifons -- which, incidentally, sell for upwards of $1000 -- when near enough the exact same dogs can be had for $100 from the city shelter.

Jumanji... my friend has one they are so beautiful, as you say not to everyones tastes. I have only heard good things about cresteds, i especially love the dark skinned ones
