Well as some of you know I am considering retiring Seren. I am going to speak to my vet before I make any decisions and also get her eyes checked.

Anyway, I could not afford retirement of one and own another to ride, but I would like to share or help others out, am sure my mate would love me to share her mare just as an example. I would not want to be without horses and until I can afford a second as a ridden horse I think there are lots of horses out there who want a share.

But I wonder for those of you out there that have gone from owning to sharing how you found it.

I feel terribly sad indeed at the thought of retiring my mare but it may be best, I could be wrong and we could be ok to go on a bit longer, but will see what vet reckons.

Anyway, if you could tell me how the transition has been from ownership to sharing with an owner I would really appreciate hearing your stories.

Thanks again to all of you for your supportive messages yesterday, it helped me pull myself together enough to just think about it all a bit more rationally until I know more.

Thanks in advance

I owned for many years and now share, although totally different situ to yours. Mine had to be PTS, and I then had a 4 year gap before looking for a share horse, which I found 2 years ago.... its really nice as you get to ride/ be around horses without all the money/time constraints that go with owning full time..... and I have been super lucky in that B's owners are amazing!

Thanks, that is good stuff to hear. I know it would be so different, but it may be what is best all round, because like I say, I could not afford two. I only wish I had my own house with land as I would retire her that way. Never mind, I am not in that position, but its good to hear that you enjoy your share. Many thanks for your response.

I bet it would be different, but hopefully in a positive, way: less worry, less responsibility, more freedom, more time..

I hope it works out for you, if thats the route you choose x

First of all I am really sorry to hear about your mare. Hopeful she will be ok.

In my experience I owned a horse for years before having to sell then had a two year gap before sharing. It worked out really great sometimes only having 3 days a week not having all the expense but ultimatly you don't have a horse if you get what i mean. The owner always has the control and can limit what you do. I think the situation depends on who you loan from to.

Like I say most of the time it's great having something to ride at 1/2 the expense and time comitment. Really hope your situation works out

Thanks hun. If I do have to retire her I would definitely still want to be around horses, my life would be so much more boring. I will see what the vet thinks about her and possible retirement. My confidence needs to be sorted out also, but its not too bad, I would still get on her and brave a solo hack but would probably not enjoy it is she is spooky as hell.
I think share would be my only option if I send her to retirement livery as I could not afford another, that way I would still get a fix of horses x

Thanks, appreciate that. I am sure it would be odd not owning a ridden horse, but it may be my only way forward, we shall see. Thanks for all the advice and support.

MoggyinManolos, I'm a first time sharer and 'my' owner was a sharer before but there are also at least two people on our yard who are former (or current but of unridden horses) owners and now sharers. TBH everyone is really nice with them because (unlike to some extent me!) they really know what they are doing and everyone knows that they are very commited to horses. Sharers do still get invited to the yard parties and stuff, along with the people who own and ride and the people who own but don't ride.

FWIW I think what you're considering is really responsible and you'll get a lot of respect for that on most nice yards :-)

I own my own horse - but last Feb advertised for a sharer for him as he can't really do the things I want to do anymore (and won't load either!)

I found a lovely sharer for my boy and I started looking for a part loan for myself. I found as a horse owner I really was in demand and had loads of offers! I was very picky (to make sure I got the perfect horse for me) and found a wonderful pony who I took out to shows all summer and had a fab time with. I now actually have him on full loan as we got on so well, but I didn't find part loaning difficult at all as his owners are so laid back!

I'm sure if you take your time you'll find something great. There are loads of people desperate for sharers at the moment and if I needed a new sharer, I'd love to have someone like you that I knew I could trust to know what they are doing!

Thanks tickles, lovely of you to say. I am going to get vet out in next couple of weeks as my friend needs hers inoculated, so we can share call out. I will get them to check her eyes and get some advice on the matter, I am not sure if its me being silly and paranoid or if I feel I know her well enough to judge, its difficult as I am a natural born worrier sometimes! Thanks again

That's very kind of you, thank you so much. I will see what the vet makes of all of this and go from there.
Thanks again to you all, your a fab bunch x

I owned for years (38) and now just share and have done for the last 5 years.
I find it better in some ways. Owners allow me free rein with the horses due to my experience. I get to compete horses I normally wouldn't be able to afford and I dont have the financial burden. purfik
