Well, today I fell off Belle because she span as I got on. Then I got back on her and went for my lesson. We had a bit of a miscommunication at a tiny jump and she slammed on the brakes and the back of her neck smacked me in the face. It hurt! Now have grazed cheek, swollen chin and cut lip. Plus my back aches where I fell off. :( *Whinge whinge*

Has anyone else been hit in the face when their horse suddenly stopped? I'm sure it must be a common accident but I just was wondering! It didn't help that she then decided to rear and buck and leap about as I was reeling from the shock, little monster.

The first thing I said to my instructor was "is my nose still straight?!" :D

Meeeeee! Dylan used to fling his head back and smack me with it all the time, ended up riding him in a standing martingale for a while. He once did it when we were jumping and bruised my jaw :(

ME!!!! :(
worse pain ever.
i have done it twice, once when she reared unexpectedly and i hit my nose, and another time when she stoppped suddenly :|
it really does hurt more than you think!
hope your okay though :)

Does this answer your question? :o

Flynn didn't even stop, we just took off in different places :o:o

I really want to say "I'm glad I'm not the only one" but that seems harsh to the rest of you!

It was weird because you really can't tell when it first happens how bad it is. Fortunately for me, it was not too bad at all, I just look a bit rough and my chin hurts!

Mine smacks me occasionally when she's anticipating a canter when we're out. Or just when she's having a paddy!!!!!! Luckily I'm getting quicker at avoiding it lol!!!! Doesn't half teach you to stay sat up lol!!!!

Me!

Result: a missing tooth, the majority of my other teeth stuck backwards at an angle in my mouth and many trips to the dentist thereafter!

I think this was around the time when I took up dressage!!

YES!
Although the pony I was on didn't stop.. He jumped the jump! He jumped it in a way I didn't expect.. I went flying about 5ft out the saddle, landed with a thump, battered my face off his neck and got flung backwards.
This resulted in me having the biggest black eye ever, the biggest brightest bruise on my chin ever and the fattest nose ever. Oh, and I also got whiplash when I got flung backwards so couldn't move my neck for a good while after that!
Wanna know the best part? I got it all on video :o

Me!!! My horse used to ballon jumps. I soon learned the XC position and not folding till the horse was already off the ground ;)

I ended up in hospital the first time it happened as he knocked me out and gave my concussion. At first I pretended I was alright and drilled him over the fence a few times (damn horse does NOT get the better of me ;) ) but decided I'd better get off before I fell off...

Yep - when I was about 12 and cantering through a route I knew really well - catch being a tree had fallen and pony jumped before I could see it.

bruised pride more than anything else, and the damage was to my teeth (ended up with chipping it, and having a razor sharp front tooth.

Later killed it, and literally had two front teeth for christmas

Yep, its happened a couple of times, the last time it happened she fractured my nose and I had concussion! Was not her fault, we were at a log, standing still, I thought she was going to step over it as the horses in front had, instead she jumped it from a stand still

Yep, training a baby flat racer to jump off from the stalls, lost two front teeth:eek: The next day my Boss did exactly the same, on the same horse, the next day he went out and bought a bunch of running martingales.

I never ride a horse in English tack without a running martingale, western I don't bother because you don't use a forward seat, anyway, most of them would cut their left front hoof off rather than be so rude as to lift their head that high;)

People 25metres away heard his neck hit my face, cracked hat nosebleed, fleeting loss of vision and so much pain! Happened 4 times in one SJ round, why do we have horses?!!!

Another one joining this dubious posse!! Years ago I decided to try one of my horses in a pelham and she took a real dislike to it and flung her head right back and cracked me in the face. Cue one abcess on front tooth, subsequent root canal and crown. :(

I'm pleased that my teeth and nose came out of it intact, quite fortunate really (looking on the brightside!).

I have had a good headache for the past few hours though. :( Lots of water and bed for me I think! Thanks for sharing your stories, I feel sorry for all our faces! :p

I managed to do this sj once, only lightly but a mane hair got stuck between my front teeth. Very distracting for the rest of the round!
I've smacked myself in the mouth with the end of my whip while going xc, when i've gone forward a bit too much and my mare has really come up in front. Ouch.

Managed to bash the brass end of my crop into my teeth falling forward at the first jump in the minimus ring (embarrassed) at the last show, we did however redeem ourselves by jumping 10 clear out of 11 jumps in the beginners ring half an hour later :)

A friend knocked herself out on the back of her horses head :(

Hehe, lucky indeed Binky! I got hit to one side so fortunately didn't damage my nose, though it does feel a bit bruised. I have a nice black bruise on my chin and scrape on my cheek but got off lightly other than that! My body aches from where she tipped me off before that though. :p
