Some happy stories perhaps?

I have paid for two of mine in installments, it required trust and honesty on both sides but it went perfectly well and i would do it again.

Both were done very differently, one was all contracted etc. The other was all done via verbal agreement. Ironcially the one that was all done via verbal agreement and nothing signed turned out to be such a superstar that hes trippled in value and continually amazes me in his talents.

Others?

I did, but I had had her on loan for a year before hand and known her previous owner for years. Was more of a yes I want to buy her but can't really afford it right now, I would have kept her on loan forever anyway if I hadn't bought her so we agreed a price and I just paid it off as I could afford to.....wouldn't have done it with someone I didn't know though

I did - I bought him from a friend, and paid in four installments. I would do it again, but only with someone I knew and trusted.

I got my mare on installments. I was in a position to keep her and had a chunk of money coming in a couple of months that was definate but was desperate for a horse (long story). I went out looking for loan with view to buy type things or loans came across a website with this mare on it. The lady I got her from buys, backs and sells youngsters. I was super cheeky and emailed sayin something along the lines of 'I'm going to be super cheeky but would you consider.......' she phoned me, we chatted for a while, went to see mare and I fell even more in love. I had gone out looking for an 8-9 year old, well schooled gelding but just clicked with a 3 year old, just backed mare (I know, I was mad). We agreed on a deposit for her, then a set amount every month and the balance to be paid when the chunk of money came through. It worked really well for me and I can't thank the lady who trusted me enough as despite us not being suitable on paper my mare is the best thing that happened to me :D:D:D:D:D

The seller was about 3 hours drive away, neither of us had ever met or knew anyone in common but we did have a contract in place and if I failed to make any payments then the mare would have been returned with the loss of the deposit.

I did and it worked out perfectly.
I paid in 3 monthly installments and he was kept at previous owners yard till id paid in full.
In that time i took over his expenses - livery fees, feet etc - and of course visited as often as i wanted and rode etc.
Was actually fab for the horse as we really bonded with no stress for him before he moved to be with me :)

I didn't but I sold one in instalments. They had it on loan for a year first. They missed one payment but then paid in full anyway well ahead of schedule and by then I was friendly with them and I wasn't bothered, I knew I'd get it. Horse wasn't dear either. No paper agreement either.

I didn't but old owner dropped the horse off at the yard when I wasn't there and then two weeks later came back for money!

She was quite keen to make space on her yard though and I wanted to pay cash and our schedules were so busy and clashing we couldn't get together for 2 weeks.

The first horse I bought for myself I paid instalments, from a local dealer. Sadly the last payment I made I no longer had him, I had lost my wonderful TB due to a dog attack and subsequent infection.

I did off the track but I worked there for a bit before so owner had an idea of my trustworthyness and my boss has a few horses in training with him so failure to pay could have been embarrassing for me had he shared the fact anecdotally. No paper agreement but I had plenty witnesses to the conversation and texts to prove agreement had it gone wrong. I paid various staff cash sums, left one on desk and all sorts, so much scope for going wrong! It didn't though and he's all mine. :-)

Me! I loaned my horse for 5 years then when offered to buy her I paid in 3 installments of equal amounts. I think the previous owner knew I wasen't going to do a runner :D

I am buying my loan mare in installments, hope to pay the majority off in June if not before, but I have her on full loan and am paying all her running costs anyway and am at the yard with a friend of the owner and where my daughter keeps her own horse. They know where I live and all that stuff too so it's a little different than handing your horse over to a "stranger" with only a small deposit and promises to pay

I bought my youngster from our vet, he had been born on the yard and never moved. I paid the first part in October and the second the following March when I received my bonus. No problems, three years on she still visits to vaccinate him and take him out for a hack.

Its not something I would normally agree to, but I did once because the sale was unexpected and the buyer was someone I knew and would be perfect for my horse. As it happened, she got the money and paid up front.
And she has been the most perfect owner.:)

On the other hand, I know of two liveries who were paying by instalments and failed to pay the full amount. One was returned to the original owner which caused great inconvenience.

I was looking for loan or LWVTB and the girl who has my old games pony suggested an appy owned by a friend of hers. He was smaller than I was looking for and younger, but I didn't know that when I arrived. Hacked him out over the moors and said I'd like to trial him at home. Owner said she was looking to sell but wasn't in a hurry for payment (my reason for not buying outright was I'd just moved to a new job with a 6mth probation period). Therefore I paid for him as and when over 12 months. I had a handwritten plain piece of A4 paper that basically said I would pay in instalments, no set deadline and that the owner would not be held liable for the behaviour or upkeep or insurance of the pony. I've had him 3yrs (paid 12 instalments) and still in touch with her now.

I have, many times. And sold them the same way. Never had a problem either way. To all the people who say "If you can't afford to pay for the horse outright, how will you pay for it's upkeep?" I say "Tosh!" The upkeep costs are fine, it is the lump sum outlay that is generally a problem for me. I don't commit to buying it if I don't think I can afford to keep it!!!

Not quite installments but when i bought my daughters pony i knew a had money coming a few weeks later but defintaly wanted the pony, he let me have her straight away and give him a cheque when i got my money. Hes a dealer too, but its also where i keep the pony and have known them since i was younger than my own daughter and learnt to ride with his son.
I did offer a deposit but they said not to bother just give them money altogether.
She was well worth her money and is worth 5 times more than the money i paid for, he does comment quite regualary that i didnt pay enough for her!!:D

Yup paid for half of him then paid the rest over 4 months.

Buds breeder lives in the village where I live, work and keep him so not much chance of me running off :p

It was very kind of him and allowed me the chance to have him :)

I did - but the seller was the YO where we already kept our other horse. We paid a deposit and then 12 monthly payments, but the agreement stated we had to pay in full if we wanted to move him off the yard. YO was getting a payment every month and gained another livery, so was happy.

I didn't have a good experience... Paid over a grand of deposit and then owner demanded the other 3k in full rather than sticking to our original 600 quid a month agreement. Had to ask parents to help as situation was getting very sticky. :(

Yes, my daughters most recent pony came with us paying instalments. we had a signed agreement and a datethat all money had to be paid by.
As it happens it hasnt worked out with her and somebody else has asked to buy her .
they cannot pay in full so we are trying to work out a deal that suits us both. I do need the money to buy another pony so cannot have a never ending agreement but trying to decide at what stage I will let her take the mare.

They are not the most reliable but she previously looked after her for 3 years so is desperate to have her back. She is not cheap to keep so I am really torn over wht to do.

I paid for my TB in installments.

A friend and I got him for free as a project horse. We were going to sell him and split the profits. I ended up buying him as I fell in love and I paid out her share via cash installments.

I did. I bought my last horse from my yo after loaning him for six months. I took over his expenses while I paid him up - doubt I'd have been allowed to move him off the yard but I didnt consider doing that anyway
