We only have one hacking route and today some helpful farmer has covered several metres of the track with huge piles of mud from the dykes which run along either side. It was safer to get off and lead Nelly past them as the mud was incredibly slippery and situated right next to a four or five foot drop into the water. We both slid around a lot and when I went to get back on I had huge clumps of mud stuck to my feet and looked like I was wearing some sort of weird platform riding boots. I had to find a big puddle to walk through to clean my feet before I could get back on. Then I had to repeat the whole thing on the way home.

I can't wait for Spring and some warmer weather to dry up all the bloomin' mud.

If this is a bridlepath you could ask the local council to have a look as it is being unpleasant to use. Don't mention "unsafe" or the council might close it temporarily as a Health and Safety measure.

It's not a proper bridlepath I'm afraid. It is just a track between fields that the farmers let us use so that we can get onto the lanes. Unfortunately, there aren't any alternative routes we can take. Hopefully the next few tractors which drive along the track will flatten mud heaps a bit so that we can start walking over them again. Some sort of animal has also dug massive holes all over this track and I am paranoid about letting Nelly step into one in case we come a cropper that way as well!
