... on the day someone came to try him?!

I have just had a fairly terrifying evening.

Lovely lady came to try Sam. The arena was being used for a lesson so we went into the fields to show his flatwork. He was a beautifully behaved as ever, didn't put a foot wrong and did some lovely work and cantered sensibly round open fields as normal.

Lesson in arena still going so decided to pop a few xc jumps while waiting. He hasn't done much xc at all since November time and had not jumped the fences in question since about October but he popped them really nicely. Another canter round the fields and he was still as sensible as ever.

Lesson then finished so we took him into the arena to show some more jumping and to let the lady have a go. Well, Sam TOTALLY changed... was absolutely full of himself, did a giant silly spook, kept taking off and threw a MASSIVE buck (with a kick out for good measure)

This is the laziest horse in the world we are talking about here! I can remember all 3 times he has EVER bucked with me and they were out cantering in company!

Good some LOVELY flatwork in the school with his new fresh state and then popped some jumps. Jumped same as ever- strong into them but really clearing them. BUT he's still fresh as anything, seriously on his toes. Napping towards the fences, trying to tank into them when he was being circled in front of them. NOT MY HORSE AT ALL

Ladt gets on, also gets some lovely work- he was looking absolutely stunning. Took him into a little crosspole and he GALLOPED at it FLAT OUT, jumped it like it was 3ft6 (seriously) and then tanked off with her afterwards which he NEVER does. I honestly thought he was going to jump out of the arena.

Luckily the woman sat it well and popped it again from walk a few times- but he was just off his head, never seen anything like it. Even after she got off he was stood goggle eyed and restless (normally he falls asleep!).

How embarrassing. She actually really liked him so I suggested she come back another day to see him being 'normal'.

so she is going to come back another day.

The colour is only just returning to my face... scared the life about of me! I have honestly never seen a horse gallop at a fence as out of control as that.

Can't think what got into him? Only think I can think of is the sudden change of weather? He was hyper in the field today AND when I brought his friends in before him he threw a major uncharacteristic tantrum whereas he is normally not bothered.

I'm gobsmaked... utterly godsmacked... where is my horse?!
crazy.gif

Te he... the gingerness is coming out of him it seems
laugh.gif
Grace was exactly the same tonight, a complete maniac and totally stressy

It was a good idea to suggest that she comes back another day. She must like him to come back and see him again too...

Indeed! The idiotic stuff aside he did me proud this evening- my jaw was dropping at some of his flatwork and he wasn't half jumping well despite the usual keen approach.

Thank god she could ride otherwise she would have been jumped out the saddle onto the floor!

I would say classic case of too much food and not enough work!!
Are you sure that the yard have been exercising him daily?!!Just sounds as though he hasnt been worked enough.
But isnt that just absolutely typical!! Mine are just the same when I feed them too much and dont do enough work, and just like Sam they'll be perfect for the first half hour or so and then suddenly...explosions!!

You may be right... he gets no hard feed (just token handful of chaff) but the grass has really started coming though.

Work wise he isn't getting as much as he would have before I broke my leg. He's probs ridden 4 times a week 2 of which by me and although I'm getting stronger we don't do a lot.

Perhaps I should re-introduce morning lungeing...

And it sounds to dodgy to say, 'hes never done that before...'

I know!!!!!!! LOL!!!! I think it helped that he had been so good up until then plus there were a few liveries stood about watching who were equally gobsmacked...

The woman was laughing about it- I just stood looking a grey colour...

This sounds like classic 'sods law' to me! Horses hey!
It sounds to me just like he is feeling very well at the moment and maybe just he quite happy were he is. It sounds like the lady is still keen so i wouldn't worry to much.

oh no - horses are a pain arent they...dont worry mine do it to me too...I am not selling but whenever I have a friend over to ride with me my horse always plays up...I would just be going on about how nice natured my horse is etc etc and he would do a massive buck or just spook at everything and even bolt off with me..! v.embarrasing...but thats horses!
Good luck...the lady obviously sees his protential and that he is a good horse...I fell off the mounting block when I went to buy my horse!! landed right on my bum in front of the yard...

think it must be the grass as on Tuesday I popped a couple of fences with Pidge and the 3rd time I came to the double - 2 strides between fences - he took charge and put one stride in
shocked.gif
now normally even when keen I can control him in a snaffle but I had no control going into the double whatsoever
blush.gif

hopefully Sam will be better the next time she comes to see him, it obviously hasn't put her off which has got to be a good sign

We always have the quitest of horses but for some reason if people come to try them they always fall off! At least she didn't do that.

If it makes any difference, mine threw a complete paddy in the school today too - my quite labrador-puppy pony reverted to the rearing, kicking, hysterical monster she was at christmas, for no apparent reason (other than had a) fed her marmite, b) fed her a teaspoonful of epsom salts, and c) we had yet another saddler come to try saddles and she's getting well tired of the standing around waiting followed by a bit of intensive schooling with something that doens't fit)

or it might be the spring grass coming through, in which case, she's going to be a brood mare and I'm going to get a very, very quiet cob and see what the grass does to it.

or maybe the entire collective unconscious of horses went a bit wild today?

good luck selling him. sounds as if the potential new owner is a very good rider which is a bonus.

Oh I shouldn't worry too much about it; anyone who buys horses on and off knows that the beggars always play up OR injure themselves before or at the time of the viewing. It happens so many times you wouldn't believe.

True.

Think it must be the grass. Lunged him this morning before work and he was still off his head (got some BEAUTIFUL work from him though so at least some of this energy is going to use!
smirk.gif
)... he was un-tireoutable (yes, another new word) and despite doing 15 mins hard work in the pessoa AND as much canter without the pessoa as he fancied afterwards (which turned out to be a LOT, he bombed round like a lunatic I thought he was going to fall over to begin with!
crazy.gif

When he'd quite finished we called it a day and after walking about to cool him off (he hadn't even broken a sweat really- he can't have lost as much fitness since I broke my leg as I thought) I turned him out. He STILL went galloping up the field like a madman.

LOL!!!!!!

Methinks the orange one is going to need LOTS of work over the coming weeks to get his head back!
smirk.gif

I think it might be the weather or their coats coming through, the horse I ride was a complete nutter last night, she is normally very well behaved and she tanked off with me in the school and threw a buck which she never has with me!! Horses - love em!

OOPs
Do you remember telling me to steer clear of a horse a few months ago, because it bucked when we tried it??
He was stabled 24/7 and fed hayledge, mix etc!!
I went to try said horse again, and ended up buying him. Now he has a "horses" life, and not fed silly feed for his workload, he is a star!!
grin.gif

I agree with everyone else, spring grass, feeling good.... and doing his best to try her out.
At least she wants to give him another go. See what he's got for her next time, LOL
