A bitter sweet tale really, not a horse from projecthorses though.
I bought a TB mare from the breeder as an 8 year old, she was going to be shot had multiple problems - terrified of being in, terrible feet, seperation anxiety, weaving etc etc. I bought her for £500 (yeah I know, stoopid!!)
She went on to win riding horse classes and compete elementary dressage.
She was half sister to Tom Cruise II the event horse.
She died 4 years ago after breaking both her back legs in the field. Not an amazing story but she taught me a hell of a lot and was stunning in ever way.
ooo i got loads!!!
Freddie wasnt from project horses but is more than a bargain!! i bought him for £250 of a local common, including bridle, rugs and delivery. He has jumped BSJA and is not far of a JA, competed at all the big shows and always placed, he loves XC ( we only every get time faults for being too quick!) he hunts, hacks alone in company, always wins WHP. Has never been lame or sick, never been a problem and i've been offered silly money for him, but more than that hes my first proper pony and taught me so much at 20 years old he hasnt come any where but 1st for two years!!!!
truffles was a 11hh dartie was so cute i paid £25 inc tack, rugs and delievery sold three days later for £800!!!!
many more including a pony swapped for a fly mo.....see my face book for pics!!!!
I paid £5 for my boy long story, short version is his old owner's ex was saying he owned him as he bought him for her and was going to sell him for meat. We though it was just empty threats but just in case, I bought him (already had him on part loan) she then had to move away due to her ex's behaviour and left him with me -short term at first, but it ended up permanent. He never made me any profit as I never sold him, but I had him for 14 years and had the best fun ever with him. I'll never have one I'll click with like I did with him. As much as I love my new boy, I know he was my horsey "one".
Bought Wonky a little welsh moutain pony for £25- he was totally wild and straight off the welsh moutains-yes we are mad!
We bought him at 6 months old. We taught him everything my grandma and trainer spent hours schooling him ect ect at the age of 7 I was on the pony club gymkana teams and going to camp. We then went on to win jumping compeitions
We then had to put him out on loan as I was getting too big for him and we didn't want such a great pony going to waste! So we let him go out on loan (very reluctantly) to a "horsey friend" she had horses of her own so we put our complete trust in her......... as you would!
After a few months everything went wrong! We got a call from her saying that he was being a total git, he wouldnt move forward, he wouldn't walk anywhere! We then went down there, in the lorry to go and collect him. When we went to collect him we couldnt believe what we saw. He had laminitus! Our total superstar pony was recked forever! He then developed EGS and from that he got pneumonia, from this we had to make the hard decision of having him PTS
sorry for the essay and going off track a bit but a total bargain pony, he was a superstar, this proves you dont have to spend a lot of money on a horse to get a superstar!
If you click the link in my sig nearly all of those horses were a bargain!
All have a home for life and are teaching many children to ride and much more besides!
I paid 750 for my lad 27 years ago. He was never a world beater but we were out competing nearly every weekend hunter trialing, show jumping. You name it we had a go!! He has given me a shed load of fun, good times and is such a gentleman. At 14 we started to do dressage and he impressed a GP level judge!! Not that we were anywhere near that level. He has cost me next to nothing in vet fees until a bad illness a couple of years ago and is still going strong at 30 yaers of age. I love him and he will live out his days with me. He is worth way more than money.
i think my dad has THE best bargain horse. when my grandparents went to pick up his pony- 14.2hh pony when he was probably about 13 a horse came round the corner dragging 2 grooms. my grandad asked what it was and they said it was mad and it was being shot in 30 minutes. my grandad said no its not put it on the horsebox, so on it went and they took it home. and OMG my grandad could spot a good horse through everything. That horse won every point-to-point entered. Hunted with the Quorn, jumped some of the biggest hedges in the country. Whipped in and hunted for my grandad (he was huntsman).
It wasnt all plain sailing as it took my grandmother 2 years to back/re train him, but my god once hed learnt he was amazing. I never met him but ive seen pictures of him and good god he could jump!
i think if hed been around now he would have competed up to advance as he was very good at dressage and could jump anything....
they sold him on for £1,200.. and i know that sounds nothing but bearing in mind this was probably about under 40 years ago so that was a fair bit tbh!
he was a truely amazing horse and i wish id known him, despite all his bad sides (throwing my dad across the stable by picking him up by his trousers etc. etc. )
I bought my 13.2 pony for 995 she jumps 3'6'' XC and SJ clear schooled to elementary DR and is worth around 5k in less than a year and was my first big reschooling project (in comparison to my others)
I bought my horse for a £1.
I've had him on loan for over a year now - his owner rang me up a few weeks ago and said she couldnt afford it if I ever sent him back, so i could just have him. Horse, tack, rugs, everything!!!
When I first got him - you couldn't ride him without lunging for 20mins first, couldn't take him up one end of her school due to a trampoline in a next door garden, couldn't tie him up with him pulling back / breaking string/rope/headcollar, took us over an hour to load him first time, the owner seemed v.reluctant to demo him doing canter (still haven't figured that one out - cos i've never had any issues with canter!)
Now he goes out every wkd in the trailer! I've done loads of hunter trials, SJ and we did our first unaffliated OneDayEvent last weekend and we came 14th
He's brilliant and has taught me soooooooo much
My aim now is to do a BE80 together next year!! oh and he's 16yrs old!
My boy also cost me a just a pound & whilst is still getting over his many issues & hasnt done anything yet (other than one show) he has done so much for my health that he is totally priceless (he kept me sane & helped pull me out of post natal depression and for that i owe him so much).
i hope one day to have a fantastic little ride & drive pony but if he never does any more than just keep me company i wont mind
I'm very lucky, as I've never had to buy a horse - either ridden other people's or been given them!
My current horse is a gift horse, who is amazing. He is about as close to bombproof on the roads as you can get, whatever goes past him, he very very rarely stops when jumping (and if he does, it is down to me!), and he can do a half-decent test too. I'm glad I didn't have to buy him, as I'd never afford it - he's priceless!
My boy cost me zero pounds. Nobody wanted him as he was a total a**e. But he is so handsome I couldn't resist. had him on loan for a year and his then owner was so relieved that someone got on with him that she gave him to me. That was 7 years ago and we have never looked back. The first couple of years were difficult and he still has his moments but boy was it all worth it. He is the quintessential, riding club horse and will turn his hoof to anything. He is basically a superstar and wouldn't swap him for the world
