Just out of curiosity :p

In what sphere do you work? Do you have your own horses and compete alongside?

I'll get the ball rolling: I'm a groom on a national hunt racing yard, including riding out, general yard duties and travelling to the races. I also hunt horses for a bit of extra cash through the winter, and P2P whenever I can as well (which hasn't been often at all recently!) I somehow manage to do 2 of my own horses on a nearby DIY yard alongside, whom I event... the pre-winter dread has already kicked in :D

Your turn!

Not any more, I have a husband and a mortgage which requires a non-horsey salary! I worked on a livery yard, dressage yard, show jumping groom and a very brief stint in a flat racing yard. I couldn't afford to live on horsey wages anymore but I really miss the work (even when the weather is pants)

I work with donkeys! I teach children with special needs and disabilities on donkeys. Great job and very rewarding. Not what I saw myself doing when I did BHSAI 20 years ago! I did freelance teach when my children were small, I could teach in the evenings when husband back to look after kids so worked really well.

I work on an eventing yard, I keep one of my horses on the yard for free as part of my wages, the other lives out with a friends ponies and I ride him on my day off. I get help with my pony from my boss and will get the opportunity to hunt and event I think (new job!)

A bit like BB I used to work with horses (teaching, stud work, hunters, comp yards, etc), as well as competing my own horses but then life came along and I needed more money. I'd also got to the stage where I was pretty much sick of the sight of them to be honest, so had a few years off.

I now have a normal job, 2 horses competing and am loving it all. Unlike BB I have no desire whatsoever to go back to working with horses! :p

I worked with horses for about 13 years, I have worked in a riding school, livery yards and for an Olympic dressage rider. When I left there I vowed never to work with horses again and now have just 1 horse which I do dressage on.

It's just been my gap year and just been working at sj yard 2 hours a day. So not loads if cash but I live with my parents and they pay for most of the horses. I just pay 10 a week towards my youngster. Going to do engine sport science at uni and after the plan is to either get full time horseys job or do pgce for teaching and eventually do vet physio. Depends whereabouts my life goes I.e. marriage etc. Always planning on keeping horses and my dream is to eventually compete at grand prix dressage.

Pretty much the same as JDC! Racers in the winter, eventers in the summer! Just finished with the eventers so back racing till may now. I have both horses at home at the mo but when the pointers is cantering he will move to DIY near work to use the gallops

Have worked with horses and in non horsey jobs and much prefer to work with the neds, used to tear my hair out working in an office but made life much easier if I could keep my horse on the yard I was working on as I did not end up resenting going to look after them then

Worked with horses for about 10 years (bringing on youngsters, training of difficult horses, trading and physiotherapy) and I absolutely loved it. Decided then to have kids, so I didn't have the time any more. Work as a translator now but would love to work with horses again (just guess I'd not earn enuf money to raise my 3 kids and keep my dogs n horses, as I'm a single mum).
Try to start working with horses at weekends and after work, tho. Hope I can manage.

currently working for an international sj yard, whip in through winter and training to be a equine physio then going to study equine thermography and then going to do a equine chiropractic qualification. oh and i also have 2 horses at home which i hunt and compete when i get round to it. so ye i am pretty involved with horses.

I am very jealous to read about all you lucky people working with horses. I have my great but brute on DIY and I work as an engineer also doing post grad research for both UCL and Imperial College.
I love the salary but would love to work with horses. Me and the OH would like to have our own yard but buy it, offering livery as well as buying and selling a bit. Its our light at the end of the tunnel!

One day..

I'm a YO. I own my own yard and live on-site (a farm). We have 30+ liveries. 7 Part and 23 DIY. I love it :D in the winter it's hard work, but not ridiculous, I still have time to ride my 2 horses, etc. This time of year is so easy, only working for 1/2 hours per day :)

I am very jealous.. one day!

We are going to have a look at a site that could be a potential yard. I really want to run a yard.. when the time comes I will no doubt be seeking advice on this forum..

I was a freelance dressage rider but took on the lease of my own dressage yard with my partner recently. My partner is horsey but he has his own non-horsey job and i still freelance otherwise we wouldnt be able to have the yard (it covers its costs and allows us to keep our horses but no profit) but i love my freelancing so works out well and def worth the crazy hours! :)

Had own yard - evented, hunted, showing, freelance teaching, dressage etc etc

got "horsed out" and retired aged 30 - went back to college and got MSc, went to work in an office :(

now got own horses, hunting and dressage-ing :) :)

Hey I work on a riding school which is getting kinda boring now but I still love it :) on one of my days off I do the local shows/events and on the other day off I ride 4 ex-racehorses and 1 cob just basic schooling really :)

Still at school! earned my keep working on a dealers yard between 12-15 then got a job helping with some hunt horses coming into 2nd season! still part time obs! and last season also waitressed at restaurant aswell as hunt horses and school with gcses! and kept my own fit for hunting!! summer time's here and im just helping friends for fun!!! before back to school and hunting!:)

I am v lucky, I work for 2 families, one has 4 horses/ponies other has 5. When kids are at school I keep ponies fit, in the winter I hunt with the mothers. When kids are home on holidays I teach them. And in between doing that I school/compete for other people.

I have 3 horses at home with my parents, 1 horse is mine that I event, the other is owned by someone who I also event, and have a youngster.

I just about manage to scrape through money wise, but not convinced I will be able to live this like this for ever! I do love my job though.
I work the hrs I choose allowing me to event when I want which is brilliant.

I work part time on a Quarter Horse Stud -mainly handling youngstock, yard duties occasionally breaking in. They also own a farm so I get roped into drenching ewes and moving cattle etc-horses over sheep anyday lol!!
I do alot of freelance schooling of difficult horses and breaking and occasionally turn over my own bought youngsters to sell on. Sometimes teach aswell (and teach stable management for pc).
On top I work 3 mornings a week at a cattery-a nightmare as some of the cats just dont know how to use one of the 4 litter trays you provide for them haha!
I currently have an affiliated dressage horse and pony, and ride an owned horse.
In comparison to working 30hrs a week in a pub and managing school ,nothing can beat it.People would walk all over me and £3.20 an hr wasnt much to event off!!

I used to work at a riding school/showing yard when i left school and did my 3 alongside this job. I then worked at a couple of dealers yards, then at another riding school/comp yard. Started at 7 and finished when finished still doing 3 along side. Now I don't work with horses but have a full time job and I struggle to do one!! Would love to work with horses again but just can't afford to x

I have my own sporthorse stud but my partner and I have taken a year out from our own business and are currently working in Germany at the Schockemohle show jumping yard. previously I was YM for a breeder of show ponies and hacks and showed her horses at county level. Hard work, long hours and **** money, but I would never go back to an office

I work with horses full-time too, mainly ridiculous amount of freelance teaching (which has just left me with vocal cords inflammation :-/ ), working on my own coaching project and grooming for a lovely livery yard.

I have a horse which I co-own with a friend of mine but he is off work with navicular syndrome at the moment.
