Hi all,
Looking for a bit of help! I'm 18 and only passed my test a matter of months ago so no point me taking lessons for my 7.5t yet!

Anyway, the guy who sometimes drives my wagon has now said him nor another friend (Who is insured to drive it) can drive the wagon because they don't have a CPC. He says the only person legal to drive without a CPC is my dad as it is in his name, regardless of who is insured to drive it.

I have read and read on the internet but can't seem to find a straight answer anywhere! This guy is a mechanic and a recovery truck driver. He also has a bee in his bonnet with me at the min,Which is why i aren't completely sold on his reasoning, and a bit of me thinks he is saying this because of his status people will believe him, and by saying this it means less people can drive me to shows so i get out less and what not, which is what is happening at the moment. So my question to you is is he right or is he wrong, and also if he is right, should he have a CPC because of his job? Brain is rattling with all this reading and just need a straight answer!

Thanks for your time :)

It's my understanding that as long as he has the correct license and is not driving in connection with employment and the vehicle is insured for him to drive ( my lorry is any driver ) you are ok.
You need ROG on this one .
Perhaps send him a pm ?
there's a huge amount of nonsense being spouted about the CPCs.

Do you pay him to drive it? If so then he is being employed and, even though mechanics are exempt from dcpc if on road tests clearly taking you to a show is not one of them! It is a very grey area and maybe he does not want to be the test case!

Me found this .....

Driver or operator CPC not required for the private (not for hire or reward/commercial) driving of any LGV

As long as the driver has the correct licence (LGV C1 for max 7.5 tonne GVW) and is insured to drive it then all is fine

Pre 1997 car test pass gives LGV C1 but a driver with just that cannot supervise a LGV C1 learner - new rules from April 2010

If you are age 18 you can get the LGV provisional now and the D4 medical will last until you are age 45 so there is no reason not to get it

If you do go for it then tick C & D only on the D2 form and NEVER pay more than £60 for a D4 medical

The HHO LGV CLINIC thread link in my signature below has more advice

PS - if not over 7.5 tonnes plated GVW then its exempt EU tacho regs for private use

Pity you are too far away for me to supervise you for FREE (with any expenses covered) because I would have enjoyed doing that especially as you have not long passed car test

EX LGV instructor (2005 to 2008)

Just got in from work and got back to this. Thankyou SO much for clearing that up ROG, reading and reading through the internet this last week has given me a serious headache! And thankyou for the advice regarding learning to drive the lorry, as i have been misgiven information on that too! Which made me think i couldn't do it yet. Wish i was closer too to follow you up on that but i am eternally greatful for your help and i will feed all this back to the guys! Many thanks!
