who keeps their horse at a yard they really love?

I love my yard! YO is knowledgeable and honest, staff are all brilliant, the horses have a routine and always get turnout. The liveries are all nice - YO will not tolerate bitchiness, and we all get on well anyway.

The people! Sure my yard isn't perfect (I don't think the perfect yard exists!) but I have great friends there who help each other out and are there where you need them but don't interfer when you don't want them too!

Another key success to any yard is owners who are fair, if they have favourites or charge different amounts to different people, bend the rules for some but not others etc. it always leads to resentment and an unhappy yard in my experience

Love, love love our new yard. Only been there three weeks but nice stables, good level grazing with regular turnout. Gorgeous new school, hay included in price grown by YO so no need to buy or store it. Happy horses, only four with three owners-bliss! Going to be out in the summer too so no mucking out come the warmer weather. Absolutely love it! YO is really knowlegable, helpful and kind to my horse. What more can I say? Good price too :-)

I agree with all of the above, a clear routine, good grazing and comfortable stables is a must (as is the no notching). We run our yard as a consortium and although the retired lady among us is at the yard more frequently we all share costs and duties and it is just so peaceful and a relaxing place for us and the horses

I love my yard, owners were horsey people so they understand my needs, they no longer have horses, so ive sole let of the yard with all facilities and theres always someone on site
I pretty much work between my 2 fields and they maintain them along with everything else including the school, i walk out the stable block onto good hacking, which is being extended and upgraded through local development, so within a year or so i'll have access to hundreds of miles of well maintained off road hacking :D:D:D i also have friends with horses 2 mins along from the farm who are happy to help me out if i need it, as i am if they need my help, its a great set up

I love my yard :) so relaxed - only six horses, five owners and we all get along brilliantly. Set up is smashing, hacking is good, turnout great. Don't have any complaints at all. My boy is currently on stable rest and he's so chilled out its not true, am sure it is the set up of the yard that is keeping him happy :) we both love it.

I have always been on small yards, but the yard I am on now is a big yard & we have been there 5yrs or so. It's a lovely friendly yard everyone gets on, we all have a laugh & if anyone can't ride their horse for any reason ill etc someone always has a horse you can ride/borrow which is nice. We have had the odd people that have been trouble makers, but they haven't stayed long ;)

I love my yard! It's only me and the YO, she has 2 horses and 2 shetties and I have 1 horse. I have acres of private land to ride around, she is always there to check on my horse and helps me out loads. Above all, she's kind and lovely and I'm so lucky that she invited me onto her own yard! It's a peaceful place to be, the horses are very chilled and I couldn't be happier.

Hi,

I love mine. It's a riding school primarily so a pretty big yard with good facilities and fabulous hacking.

The people definately make it for me. It's full livery but most of us help each other out - plenty of opportunities to ride in company.

The YO is great - if your horse is out of action she lets you borrow one of hers and if you have a riding friend without their own - she'll lend you one so you can ride out together.

P.s. It's refreshing to have a positive yard thread - after reading some 'I hate my yard threads' it's really refreshing :D

And me. It's been a huge struggle to find a yard that's easy to get to from London and has regular winter turnout, but have finally found one :) lovely y/o who adores my horse. Beautiful new huge school plus good hacking. Perfect :)

Me! I love my yard - we have all year turnout, fantastic hacking, great friends, nice horses and good facilities.

Of course there are a couple of rules I might change but that would just benefit me and not necessarily the yard!! ;-)

I love my yard.

I was on a yard of 30 horses and at least 60 people. the yard owne was NEVER on site which meant certain liveries decided to 'run' the place themselves. Yard was full of bitches and bullies.

The yard I am on now only has enough space for 5, maybe 6 horses. All the owners are lovely. Yard owner is on site and has rules which everybody respects and abides by. We all follow the same or similar routines and help eachother out if needed. No-one sticks their noses in where they aren't wanted and there are no busybodies. We come and go as we please and do, pretty much as we wish. It does help that it is a beautiful yard and we all like to keep it that way. :)

The reason I'm at my yard is because my horses have always loved it there.

I'm happy enough, but I wouldn't say I love it. There are facilities I wish were there that aren't. Every so often the people change and we get the odd live one or wierdo that makes my life more difficult, but I figure that the horses have to live there and I only visit.

Me! Ive not been there long but it seems really nice. The yard owner is a lovely farner and his wife who were absolutely brilliant aft I had to go knocking on their door on christmas day asking if I could move my horse in the following day (long story). There is only one other girl on the yard who has five and she is just lovely. We are on the same level and we seem to get on great. Shes really helpful but not interefering and she has children herslef so I dont feel like my boys need to be quiet and blend into the walls when we go down there. The fields are a home made paddock paradise which I love since my girl is barefoot. They are turned out everyday until late and they go out early. The horses live in a small herd and they live on my door step so I can be there in thrity seconds. We have Dartmoor on our doorstep and whilst there are some things that arent great, there is always compromise whereever you go. Im really happy with my yard!

I used to... When I was a teenager..

Facilities were great - huge indoor, snack machines, gallops, regular competitions
The crowd were great - competitive pony club and show jumping teenagers, out x3 a week as a group competing
No adult supervision, lots of cute boys, a bar across the road that served underagers... It was HEAVEN

Now however I look back and turnout was awful, stables were small, etc but it was 3 years of being PERFECT!!! When my parents build our own stables I was traumatised!

If my parents had any clue however what used to go on they would ground me even now! My needs have changed, now I actually pick yards based on what the horses need, current yard is very good indeed.

I love mine, great facilities, friendly people, everyone willing to help each other out if needed, great riding. Best decision I ever made was moving there :D

I love mine because they understand Ned :)
He's not as bad as he used to be, but I don't think many places would accommodate his needs.

It's small, messy and sometimes a bit "un-BHS", but it's a fabulous place that lets the horses be horses. YO is such a kind woman and the new YM is great too, really sweet and lets you know how much even the smallest bit of help means to her :)

I love my yard, its so relaxed, all the horses are happy, help is there if you need it, other liveries are nice (couple of odd ones....;)). Yo is lovely! I have no complaints and neither do my horses :D

I must love my yard or I would have left a couple of months ago. I love the location (hidden away, very secure) . . . love his stable (sealed rubber matting on the floor and a good three foot up the walls - so cosy) . . . love the school (free draining, good surface) . . . love the hacking (directly onto Forestry land, no roadwork, varied, our own gallops and cross country fences) . . . and really like many of the people. Like most big yards though (there is stabling for 30 horses), you get your fair share of "personalities" and I'd be lying if I said our yard is free from drama. However, we seem to have hit a calm patch, so I'm loving that aspect too :).

Lastly, most of the people on the yard have been unbelievably kind and supportive while the Donkey has been in horsepital.

I do!

I moved from Oxford (originally from North Cotswolds) to Rutland in April. This is my third yard now. I probably would never have considered it if it hadn't been recommended by a friend. But I've loved it so far, we don't have a school but the stables and grazing are great. We have a free rein to do what we like, and it's well kept. Every one is so friendly, and I just feel at ease there, not worrying about going to the yard.

Such a lovely place - and cheap too!

We are at a private yard which has only 5 horses. The stables are around 14' - 15' square with rubber matting, window & also velux roof windows. The yard is nice & quiet, has a lovely spacious secure tack room with sink & tea making facilities, barn for storing hay & haylage, another barn for storing all your extra stuff as well. There's a lovely toilet with hot water & warm air hand drier. There's parking for the lorry. There is an illuminated sand & rubber menage which never floods or freezes. There is comprehensive CCTV for security. There are 10 acres of grazing so ample grass all year round. We don't have a muck heap, it all goes on a trailer & is tipped when full. The arena is regularly graded & levelled. There is plenty of good hacking but we are only a few miles from a motorway junction so can get to venues easily. We pay no more for this than we did a few years ago at a pretty grotty place.

The YO's wife is horsey & a really lovely woman who thinks the world of all the horses there. Her husband isn't horsey at all but looks after the maintenance, levels the arena & rolls & tops paddocks etc. They can't do enough to help you out & put the horses first all the time. It's diy but we do help out each other if it's needed.

There is only one thing wrong with the place & we've told the owners......... unfortunately we don't own it! :)

I love my yard..i do as i please with the land and stables and there is no bitching and when i leave my fork in one place i can guarantee that it will still be there when i go back later and no feed or hay/straw goes missing..The YO is bloody fantastic and i could of never asked for a better person..The reason is because it's my own place and i am the YO because i'm a miserable old git and do not like people and livery yards..

Memememememe. YO rang the other day and told me how much they love having me there and how much they love my "sweet gem of a horse". I told them that was good because if they ever ask me to leave, I will chain myself to the gates!!!
