Who keeps their TB's out all year?

Shilasdair, I honestly didn't take your post totally seriously.

Just was saying thought it was nice for them to have a dry bed to lie down on.

With our summers, they have no choice but to lie down on wet ground anyway!!!!!!

Think we may of lost sight of the fact that horses were once wild animals you know, with no one to give em a nice warm dry bed!!!

I keep my horse in over the winter (end Oct to end April, it is the highlands!!!!) but he was diagnosed with spavin and my vet said to keep him out if I can. In a panic about this as he has very weak skin over his withers from being covered in huge sores in this area when I found him, the skin was so bably damaged it will never regain full strength. Winter here is hard and I dont know how I will manage to keep him well enough rugged for his warmth. He's Irish too but unlike all the other irish horses mentioned he is not tough when it comes to the weather.

I adopted a young TB last year as a companion for my connemara. He had been almost starved to death as a 2 yo.

As connie bangs stable door to get out at dawn (which starts dogs barking, neighbour's dogs barking, the whole county barking) I decided to leave them out 24/7 with ad-lib hay this winter. TB was well rugged and happy as a clam out there with his hay and his friend. He gained a nice bit of weight through the winter (he'd been a bit skinny when he came here - definitely not starving now!). I plan to do the same again this winter. They've been through the last two months without rugs and I left him unrugged even when it was raining heavily - they have good thick hedges and overhanging trees in the field and he hasn't been cold at all.

I did bring them in at night thru January when we had torrential rain daily and I just wanted them to come out the wet for a while - but they were happy to go out even when it was pouring at 6.00 in the morning.

So I think Ty will be fine and will enjoy his new life. Good luck!
