I will be the proad owner of one on Sunday and aim to do the ROR showing classes and if he takes to it maybe event. I just wondered if there were any success stories on here of ex racers that have started a new career.

Don't have one now, but I bought an ex-steeplechaser from the local market when I was 17. After a couple of painful years while I learnt to ride him, and we gained his trust he ended up on the PC teams for Show Jumping and ODE and we PN Evented.

He used to take strides out XC, and had a habit or coming down steps in one go if you didn't watch him, but was a fantastic ride. Always wished I'd had him as a youngster (he was 16 when I got him), he would have been a fantastic eventer.

Good luck with yours, I can recommend a trip to a local beach at somepoint, we used to take mine to Camber Sands and he loved it. Never been so fast in my life though!

Got lots, love 'em to bits!
We do dressage, eventing, team chasing, showing, pleasure rides... the list is endless. I never think 'he's an ex racer so we can't do it'. They can be very trainable and very rewarding!

I became the proud owner of one on the 3rd dec o7, we have been very succesful at dressage generally always in the top 3 when he doesnt have a TB moment!!! We are now jumping and have been doing sj quite well only small at the moment though we have also been xc schooling the biggest problem was trying to get him into the water which is crazy when he perfectly happy goes through floods and puddles anywhere but ditches and steps not a problem. He raced on the flat 5 times and was not very good as he didnt like getting bumped around.

Mine will be a 10 year old with numerous wins but is fed up of racing and needs a new life. I'm so excited. I have an event horse who is out of action at the moment and so the timing is perfect. I hope I can run them together eventually if it goes well.

Grins with giddy childlike excitement!!

Well, we have an 25 year old ex steeplechaser, hacks out occassionally (when not being footy!), has scars on his legs from them being fired (not from racing - knackered his tendons from being tied to a gate and then dragging it after him - not with us I hasten to add!!) and still tries to race his buddies if his feet step onto a stubble field.

Jogs continually on a hack after being cantered, and is generally very irritating when excited. Have done some very low level sj and xc on him, he very much enjoyed it and it took me three large circuits of the field to stop him

Lovely temperament though, and a bit of a wuss.

Mine is just 6 today!!! Raced on the flat when he was 3, only for one season though, he is not full of confidence but i am hoping to build on that so that we can event eventually, mine was fate when he came along it was meant to be my event mare had been put down on the friday and i was told about him on the saturday went to see him on the tuesday picked him up the following tuesday, dont think he will ever be as brave as her but you never know when he is confident in himself he may be fingers crossed!!!

When do you get him?

I have 3 and i love them, i wouldn't have anything else, but i did work in racing for 10yrs so i think that has i lot to do with it

.

My old boy use to point-point, team chase and low level sj.
One is just starting to dressage and the other is my event horse. And i have another one but he is just a field ornament.

Hope you will have loads of fun with yours.

I pick him up on Sinday. He only raced three weeks ago so I plan to let him down lightly then give him a few weeks off before doing anything with him. He's supposed to be bombproof and quiet but a trainers definition of bombproof and mine might be differant lol!

I've got an 8 year old ex hurdler/chaser - had him a year and he's done hunter trials, fun rides and hunted 3 times a week all season. He's now out in the field still slightly broken after buggering about in the field during the snow. He's the most lovely horse - just wish he was a bit tougher! Funny how he never once hurt himself hunting only when he was in the field.

We were going to do dressage and Retrained Racehorse classes this summer which is on hold at the moment.

how exciting

yeh prob best to let him down a bit, mine had been turned away for a year but so he should he was only 3/4 so needed to grow and fill out he was 15.1 at a push when i got him and he is now nearly 16hh well 15 3 in front and 16hh at the back hopefully he will level out again.

Mine is pretty bombproof although he does like the occasional jump in the air when a car is slightly to close or fast or hits the headge line!!! He does have a few spooks but never whips round like my old mare used to he does keep going forwards which is nice!!!

I have a 16.3hh american tb ho won a race and gave up after that - so far we have been to two shows, ridden dressage tests with marks of 61%,58% and 55% and been combined training and have had a fab time at all of them - only thing I would change is the fact he is possibly the biggest pansy I know

I have 3, I got one and liked it so much I got another..... and another.... and I have helped reschool and rehome a few too. I think too many people presume they are going to be difficult because they are exracers and dont just get on with it, none of mine have been that difficult, certainly no more difficult than any other young horses (I got 2 of them when they were just turning 4). the trick is to understand how they have been trained and what they have been taught and gradually train them ouit of the bad bits!

My 3 have had a go at everything - well except showing cos it bores me senseless - and have done me proud on many an occasion...

every ex racer i have sadly had has ended up with some sort of problem
frown.gif
i had a ex steeple chaser on loan with view to buy as soon we did fast work with him he would fall lame and vet said it wouldnt be worth checking it out as it was from a fall he had had whilst he was racing he was 6! i was going to do sj and xc with him, must admit though he was a lovley horse to ride, i also had a ex flat racer she ended up with kissing spines but when she was in work she was so willing to please she was exstremly green after having a few foals and that .... i would love to have one again tho and hopefully with no problems .... i also know two tb x racers who are top show horses

been to hoys and all tht

Both of mine in siggy are ex-racehorses. Grey horse events, chestnut can play polo and hunts/events/does it all really. Grey horse is a bit skitty and sensitive, chestnut is tough as old boots, never a lame day, puts up with anything. Would always get an ex-racehorse now, TBs are just fab, so quick to learn and wonderfully trainable.

Good luck I hope he is everything you wished for - we have a TB registered with Wetherbys but not sure if he raced as we looked him up on the TB Database and the following details are after his name, does anyone know if these relate to racing?

Anyhow he has either been very very good or very very horrid, we knew something was wrong as his tantrums were getting more often but we could not find it, anyhow looks like following a big bronc last week that he has inflamed an old pelvic injury, however vet can not assess yet as following his bronc he now has a curb on hock and front limb lameness. So we have to leave a few days for everything to settle.

Whilst we don't want him in pain we are relieved to see now where it was coming from as he can be so sweet that we kept saying it was not just his nappy traits (he's a sod on the XC) after his bronc his pelvis ended up very unlevel although it is almost level again now, we only hope we can get him right again.

Good luck with yours TB's really are incredible even if they are often pansy's.

Ive just sold mine after nearly 6 years of having him (in sig), got him as a scrawny 4 year old and we evented up to Novice level, did PC areas and camp several camps, such a brilliant horse! I miss him so much
frown.gif
I would definitely get another again, such great personalities, very clever and talented.

I have an 8 year old who hunts ,jumps actually does everything and has won me 5 red ribbons in 7 entries in Novice dressage since January he is the king of Cool !!
Luckily is a very good doer who is on limited grass at the mo but did live our 24/7 over the winter with a very good rug - Some Exracers but not all are the smartest willing and fun creatures to have if in the right hands but and it is a big BUT they certainly dont suit all people as they are very quick to take advantage if they can- LOL i am having major right rein issues at the mo and had convinced my self ponio was broken until my wonderful trainer sat on him this morning ....

Good Luck though with yours and i wish i could have another TBH their is nothing they cant do if they are the right type .

same story different colour horse lmao, so i went and brought another because he had been so good for me

I have one, a two year old, never actually raced but trained and not suited. At the mo she is 15.1 at the withers and 16h at the quarters........ don't know when she'll stop growing! Enjoying life just being a horse with the others (:

My ex racehorse evented and now shows at top level. Have loads of friends with ex racehorses, plenty of which do different things, some of which are a little scary at times and others which are very quiet. Ditto people above would go down this route if ever looking for another. Good luck with your one.

I'm pleased that once you've had them most of you wouldn't give them up. I really am looking forward to giving him a new job
