I remember as a child a horse called Pitz Palu who was a show jumper. I remember watching him when show jumping was shown on 'normal' TV and we saw the likes of Harvey Smith and David Broome in the 1950 or 1960s.

Not sure why I was thinking about Pitz Palu but I was wondering if anyone remembered who first rode him. I think it was a young woman who rode initially and he won a few classes at his first visit to the like of HOY. He was also ridden by Alan Oliver who first rode at HOYS in 1949.

this was when showjumping was exciting and we were allowed to stay up 'late' to watch it (in black and white). Sadly, it's not the same now, too commercial and too high a turn over in the horse dept.

I agree. Showjumping was exciting back then (showing my age lol). As you say, it is all very commercial now and far too many of that 'family' on our screens. I used to like watching the Whittakers but now there are always about half a dozen of them in every class and it's getting a bit boring.

gawd, look at the crowd!

there are so many more to look at but don't want to bore everyone. Those were the days!

I have a lump in throat and tears in my eyes after watching Eddie and Boomerang. They were a brilliant pair.

I remember the ho-ha about Harvey's v-sign. Harvey and David were good fun to watch.

Andrew Fielder, isnt he doing a bit of dressage now?
Yes remember these names and horses well, but not the answer to the above posters question!
Good thread.

OMG when I was a kid I used to build jumps in the garden and I was always riding Pitz Palu :) Such heady days :D

my other favourites were Hartwig Steenken and Simona, Fritz Ligges on a big grey, Hugo Simon, Raimondo D'Inzeo - they were amazing.

The pair that really stood out for me were Peter Robson and Grebe - he was such a quiet rider, everybody else put so much effort in but Peter and Grebe just floated round.

Pitz Palu was ridden in his later years by Malcom Pyrah and Vibart was ridden by Andrew Fielder, both well known both at County and International level. Vibart was just up the road from me, and I had the good fortune to watch both horse compete on many occasions.

this takes me back used to think Hugo Simon was hilarious to watch and i too had jumps all round the garden which i jumped on my space hopper ,pretending to be Caroline Bradley.
God i feel old.

Me, and I remember all the Everest horses, the Sanyo horses and the likes of Buttevant Boy, Beau Supreme, Tauna Dora, Tigre, 'Forgie', Anglezarke, Coldstream, Speculator, Philco - I could reminisce for hours.

Pitz Palu was produced as a 4yr old by Karen Young. she took him to grade A and rode him at Hoys. Sadly Karen died in a car accident.
Alan Oliver then rode Pitz Palu and won many national and international classes

Ted Edgar and Uncle Max, now there was a character!!!!

Lovely memories, I used to be allowed to stay up late and watch on the beeb with my Dad, on a school night too!!! I remember Peter Robeson always used to ride in an old, faded hat. We had real characters in those days. Another one sat here feeling my age!!

I remember Pitz Palu he was an irish horse by Redwood and was first ridden by Karen Young who was sadly killed with her 3 year old daughter in a car crash years ago. Alan Oliver took over the ride and was very successful with this horse.

He was a lovely chestnut horse, hunter type and looked kind and genuine.

Vibart was ridden by Andrew Fielder - who was granted permission to ride in horses at 14 because he was to tall for ponies. (it was the BSJA rule in those days that juniors could only ride in horses in their last year of ponies)

I remember Harvey Smith riding a coloured cob type at Wembley, think it was Harvester. I also remember Ted Williams and Pegasus, David Broome on Wildfire and Sunsalve them Mr Softee, Pat Smythe on Toscaand Flanagan (she also had Sunsalve but never really got on with him. George Hobbs. Douggie Bunn on Beethoven, Johnnie Kidd on Little Owl. The D'Inzo brothers, Dundrum at about 15 hands with Tommy Wade clearing the Puissance wall at 7' something. Not to forget Anneli Drummond Haye, Marion Coakes on Stroller - many more that many will not have heard of!

I agree that Peter Robeson was probably the most classic rider of them all. He was often the 'spare' rider for the Olympics in that if a rider was injured then he could take their place in any field, eventing, dressage or SJ.

I too agree that SJ was more interesting, there were more risks taken as the poles were far more solid. One of the most thrilling jump offs I ever watched was in a class at HOYS and Hugo Simon came in on Flicka and just galloped the course leaving an unbeatable time. Couldn't get away with that now.

Harvester was a big bay horse, the coloured cob was Rolling Hills.
