Well i ride a 17hh IDXTB, i got him when i just turned 14 a while back, he seemed HUGE then, but i grew and now he seems 'normal' size. I heard a rule that the perfect size horse's withers should be level with the middle of your nose??...i dont think this takes chunky horses into consideration....:P

Captain is 17-2hh approx and a KWPN Gelderlander, I think you just get used to them being big. However, even at 5ft 9in I couldn't, even if I wanted to, mount him from the ground. Once on top he is exactly the same as any other horse. Mind you if you fall off, you have time to plan yout fall! :p:p

nancy is 16.2, but because she is built like a tank, noone believes me and they think she is taller - we get on using a chair or mounting block, I am 5' 9'' but her withers are above my nose!! Her feet are huge!!!!

ha i know what you mean! i get on from the floor and i basically do the splits, im only 5"7 too, and falling off is horrible because i actually have time to think about whats happening!!! I think chunky horses always look bigger, i rode a shire X who looked massive but he was actually smaller in height than my boy.

17hh+ feels normal to me now tbh :/

MW youngster's now touching just under 17.3hh, LW is 17hh and HW is 17.2hh
Last year our HW was full up 18.3hh and our HW youngster was 18.1hh.

My boy is only 16.2hh and feels tiny bless him!

we have 2 16.3s - nearly ID
one 17.1 - WBxTB
2 17.2s - ISHs
and a 17.3 (and a half) - also an ISH

I also ride a 15.1 (and a half) racehorse - he's very close to the ground when I get off!

17hh(ISH) 5yr old ... I'm 5'8 :D ooh and this was our first ever mounted hack :D

wow cliqmo he looks lovely! his first hack must of been exciting :D. has anyone broke in a big horsey? ive helped break in ponies, i dont think id have the guts to get on a big horse, i can put up with ponies constantly bucking, not sure about big ones XD.

Milly is 16.1hh, not overly big but she felt huge to start with as my previous horses were all 15hh and under! I fancy riding something a bit bigger just to see how it feels!

We did our youngsters...our little man [just verging 17hh] has just been a little darling and no trouble at all and dare I say it, not had one buck or similar yet.
Our other youngster, was a little more difficult in his own wierd way, but I trust him with my life and he's a dude bless him. Took him out hunting for his first time over christmas and he was the best behaved one out there near enough, and had only had his first gallop the night before bless him! Even gave leads over the fences out :D

I used to ride a 17.2 wb x tb. Thought he was huge when i first started riding him but got used to it and for a while after found everything so small!

Yes I backed Bentley myself :D I would recommend it to anyone who has the patience and courage :o to see it through as it is the most rewarding thing I've ever done and it is just wonderful how walk-trot-walk can feel like an achievement again after so many years of taking it for granted on my old schoolmaster :)

Horse I used to ride (before I got pregnant) was 17.2hh see avatar! and I m only 5 foot. I look so small but no one ever said anything when i was on top and I found him very responsive after two years schooling. And I always got on from the ground!!! ta dar!
Only issue was out hacking when a kid drops a whip and either I get off to get it or I get off to give the kid a leg up when they get of to get it. and Fred (avatar horse) would spin on the forehand while you hop round after him.17.2hh standing still on concrete from ground easy. in middle of MASSIVE arable field spinning lot more difficult the kids don't get to carry whips anymore!

well at least theres lots of people out there who also ride biggies :D me and my friend are the only ones in the local area who ride biggies! i would of hated to be the one to break in my boy, hes a git!!

I ride my OH's 18.2 + Warmblood (he is so big the measuring stick is too short:)) I am 5'7.

Have backed ponies (for a lady that bought them when she was pregnant so decided that she couldn't do it:rolleyes:) and larger horses, have found that the ponies can get you off far quicker and being so close to the ground you haven't got time to 'think' how to fall and get slam dunked, have had some lovely bruises and torn abdo muscles. The horses were much nicer to deal with, but may have been down to the prep that OH did with them before putting me on as the crash test dummy:D

I ride a 17.2hh and am 5'3" :) He has a cracking jump on him and is such a confidence giver when jumping, we have a lot of fun :)

He has a lovely jump twizzel :D. I know what you mean alwaysbroken, i rode a pony who was in training and was cold backed, she started a bucking fit and i ended up in a heap winded! my big boy gave a mighty buck and i landed laughing my head off! Although sometimes i prefer a fall from a pony than my boy, if i land on my side;theres such a thump!

Dizz is 16.3 I think (measured her the other week and now can't remember! lol).

Her whithers are high and her back isn't yet muscled up, so I'm probably sat at 15.3hh-ish.

When I came off her, I remember lying with my head somewhere along her side and thinking "Ooh, I'm coming off; I don't remember how to do that!!"

My boy is a 17.1hh Han x tb. He doesn't feel that big. Only time he feels big is when he has seen something he is not sure of and 'grows' a couple of hands!! I don't look down then cus it does seem a long way down!!

So you riders on these big horses if you saw a ten pound note on the ground when you were hacking would you dismount and pick it up ? Or would it have to be a twenty pound note to make it worthwhile.

I'd jump off for a £1  :o ...but then I'm perpetually broke and my horse is very good at standing near gates / tumps / raised ground and waiting for me to get on :D

Maggie is a 17.2hh (see signature) IDxTB. I am 5'3 and showjump her and my sister, 5'4 competes her in Elementary dressage. Ok, she is technically too big but she is so rideable and we adore her.
