Who rides and leads? Any tips?

In my defence, I use the lunge line because all my guys are 17hh+ and a small leap for them would be a giant leap for a 16hh! 99% of the time, I have it coiled in my left hand and it is no bother. When and if they pull back/away, then I really do need that length. If I had a leadrope, even a long one, then it would be pulled out of my hand, or I would be pulled off the horse. Maybe it's just many years of practice, but I don't have a problem with it.

When I was r/l my 2 eventers, they were 16hh and 16.1 and I had the lead one in a headcollar and leadrope as he was perfect - he trotted next to me on a loose rope and you wouldn't even have known he was there.

I tried with my two. Total disaster. Even though they get on pretty well they bicker like only brothers can. Tacked them both up so I could swap if I wanted. Rode the (slightly more) dominant one and the other wouldn't come close enough. Swapped over and the dominant one kept nipping the other causing him to shoot off down the lane. Jumped off and led them home and butter wouldn't melt. Tried again in the school and they just wouldn't stop nagging at each other so gave up!
I think this is what would happen with my two. I'd love to do it but they are not great friends. Might be brave and try it in the arena one day

I think these days I would probably use the pony long reins I have (just one of them) threaded through the bit, as they're 2m long and a bit longer than a normal rope, and they're rubberised for extra grip! They've been really handy for long reining and doing in hand work with my horse too, I'd fully recommend a pair of pony long reins!
