Who sells their horses to dealers ?

Do genuine people with genuine horses sell to dealers or is it people that want to offload something dodgy? I know a lot of the horses seem to come from Ireland. I am considering going to a dealer as in theory you should have some comeback if things go wrong, but wonder if they really do have genuine animals. Im not talking about the high end animals here.
 
I have a genuine pony i am thinking of selling to a dealer - purely because i am fed up with timewasters/numpties who lie about their abilities or are just out for a free ride!!
Just be choosy about the dealers you go to, and you could end up with a brilliant animal, good dealers have a reputation to uphold and are unlikely to sell you a dud.
 
As with all things, there are good and bad ones. I know a dealer who will buy ANYTHING for £350, if hedoesn't move it on within a week for a good profit it'll have its head off.
There are also plenty of good ones that take a lot of time and care with their horses.
You can only go on reputation, but take good advice (vet) when buying off anyone.
 
i bought my first pony from a dealer and i had her 12 years but she wasnt the one i went to try she was the one that came off the lorry instead and turned out to be even better than the one i tried i'd rather buy from a dealer than an private sale not just because you have something to go back on but if its a youngster you can teach it whatever you want i know a few dealers in ireland where i get my horses from ive had a good friendship with a few in scotland as well but sometimes people do sell to a dealer being a last resort
 
Remember dealers operate at all ends of the market.

The ones that buy & sell below £2k may be mostly broken.

However high prices dont always mean high quality.

I know some really nice horses that went to dealers as the owner needed the cash fast due to change in circs/ divorce etc. I also know of some that were moved to dealers as they were very tricky.
 
I sold mine to a dealer - a well known one around my area with a good reputation.

I just couldn't face the selling process again, so lost out on some money but didn't have the hassle. I know where he has gone and that the new owners are really pleased with him.

It was quite correct to state that there are several different levels of dealers.

Many dealers buy their horses from auctions or sales and many dealers that have horses that keep coming back to them and will off load them at an auction/sale.

Just because a dealer is selling a horse for a large some of money does not meen that they or the horse are genuine.

There are people that do not want to sell their horse and prefer of loading it to a dealer and also those that need the money quickly that will sell it to a dealer.

Sadly like car dealers there are a large number of rogues out there (many posing as genuine private sellers!) that will take your money and run............

Best advice is to find 10 people that have bought from a dealer in the last 2 years and get their feedback. That way you will get some feel for the way that specific dealer operates. However what ever you do always take a knowlegabe person with you, have the horse vetted and get a written receipt.
 
I bought from a dealer/producer. But I knew them previously, have seen horses they've sold/schooled/produced and know that they have a very well thought of reputation to up hold. I felt more confident buying from them than buying privately as I knew they wouldn't sell me any rubbish and I knew they'd be there for me if I had any problems.
They only buy and sell the occasional pony, they are predominantly producers, and it was just pot luck that they had a coloured traddy in, when I'd searched high and low for one.

I think a dealer should be able to provide you with references, etc. and it's a good idea to do your homework on them before you buy... and ALWAYS get a horse vetted.
 
We bought a fab little mare from a dealer. Wouldn't swap her for the world.

I also sold one of my horses to a dealer. Primarily because I couldn't face the selling process. There was nothing wrong with the horse, he was just too much for me.
 
We sold a Hafflinger to a decent dealer, the guy helped us out a couple of times, both horses were a problem, we were straight with him why we wanted rid, no point in being otherwise, he wasn't going to sell onto anyone unsuspecting.
 
I part ex'd my TB to a dealer and paid the balance on my current horse.

The TB was just to much for me but 'if' they sold him onto a better rider than me all would have been ok I'm sure.

I couldn't sell him privately as it was just novice people replying so I wouldn't let them try him!

The horse I brought from them has been great.
 
I wouldn't sell D to a dealer because she'd go mad while on a dealer's yard, she's very much a one woman horse and when the times comes to sell her I'll be picking the new owner very carefully.

Would I buy off a dealer? yes, my friend has a lovely genuine youngster that had been brought over from Ireland and nicely started.
 
I pard Xed a horse via a dealer a few years ago. Horse was great and totaly as i described him. I had decided i wanted something that i could do a bit more with and my cob wasnt able to do it. I had only gone to the dealer to see what types were out there in my price range and fell in love with a TB needing some TLC and that was that! Horse totaly genuine and would have given someone loads of fun.
 
I have a friend who is trying to sell a horse at the moment. She is getting so fed up with people wasting her time, (including someone who had the horse vetted, horse breezed through 5 stage, and the person pulled out after the vetting!!), that she is seriously considering taking him to a dealer, even though she'll only get about half as much for him.
