Who to alert ?

I'm not proud to say I fell off my mare today and despite my best effort to hold on to her, she won and cantered off along the bridle path until she was out of sight. To cut a long and rather panicky story short, I retraced the way we had ridden back to the stables and found her at the top of the drive munching on grass thankfully none the worse for wear.
My question is, and I should probably have done this before now, but who do people call - apart from the stables - to alert when this happens to them ?

yard...but something I only ever think of is that it is recommended to have a tag with yours and a yard contact number which is attached to your saddle.

Glad you were safely reunited. It can be a very very scary and awful walk when you have no idea if they are safe or hit a car and hurt someone

as above- I have a dog tag on my saddle with numbers on- one is my mobile I keep on me.

Glad you both ok- I know how scary that is!! luckily I have always managed to keep hold of my reins, but I rode to my house once and my sister had a ride in the garden for 5 mins on my pony, but my pony suddenly decided to walk off down the drive, then trot..then gallop... and disappear into the horizon and 10 mins later (after me running down the road in hysterics) a man drove by with my sis looking dishelved in his car. He had kindly picked her up after pony had ditched her somewhere and drove us to where he saw the horse. Someone had called the police as well as a patrol car was following her down the road. Thank god a lady caught her and was leading her to a nearby yard (assuming she'd come from there) police said she'd galloped two miles down the middle of the road dodging traffic :s that was one of the most terrifying moments for me lol thank god my sister, pony and no one was hurt.
With that in mind, I would also check local yards/farms in the area as if someone catches your horse they may take them there

I would say in that situation just contact the yard. If you think your horse may end up on the road then 101 as well. They will not go and look out for him but if someone calls it in then they know who to contact. I agree that having tags on the horse is a good idea. I have bright colour (so people notice them) keyring type tags with a paper insert on my saddle, bridle and hat. These have yard address, my mobile number and yard owners mobile number.

I have a little bag attached to the saddle with all the Horse Info inside - name, address of owner, telephone number of contacts, vet, etc.

On your phone you should have ICE - In Case of Emergency so if you were knocked unconsious there is a number to contact.

As for your situation - very frightening - really all you could do was to phone the yard YO, a friend, and if by any chance the horse had disappeared then the Police and Horse Watch plus any horsey friends and contacts you could think of. There are various Facebook groups for local riding clubs.

huskydamage That experience must have been absolutely terrifying for you, not only the pony to worry about but your sister as well ! Thank goodness both were safe and unharmed. Thank you for your advice, very gratefully received.

Sprig and Orangehorse thank you very much for your replies - ICE is now on my phone and updated plus have installed all the phone numbers of local yards so I can alert them should it happen again .
Thanks everyone.
