After a scare with my foal (luckily just an abcess!) i really need to insure him and his mum! Just wondered who you recommend to go with? Neither are ridden as yet so all i need is cover for vets fee's, liability etc.

Any info appreciated.

I'm with AmTrust Equine, have found them fab and they have a very good reputation on here.
Brilliant to deal with, the best price I could get for what I needed and (so I hear, as touchwood, I haven't had to make a claim) very good at paying out.

For liability go with BHS gold membership, for theft have a freezemark/microchip and for vet's fees open a regular savings account! That way you will have a nice pot of money for any vet's bills, whereas with insurance you just end up with loads of exclusions! If you need insurance while building up your emergency pot then I have found that NFU and Petplan pay up OK.

KBIS recommend them everytime

Never questioned any pay out with my lad and they only needed my word to insure him,not a five star vetting

(originally got a quote with seib, only wanted to insure him for £2k and they wanted a 5 stage, wtf??)
Nfu wouldnt let me insure horse unless i had my house or car insured with them??eh!!Dont know if they changed that policy as i think they maybe lost alot of business!
E&L dont touch with a bargepole!!

That's also a v. good idea, although I don't think I could save well enough! (Especially if I had to insure and save to begin with!)

I'm with Stoneways & have made two claims to date. First claim was death of horse & second (new policy) was tack theft. Both claims were approved & paid within two weeks. Very helpful on the phone too.

AmTrust, don't try to wiggle out and pay up, will also continue to insure your horses depsite you having previously claimed. Which I found NFU unwilling to do.

Does anyone know if you swap to any these good ones from another insurer (the bad one) if you need to get new 5* vetting - cheers

ie is it as easy as switching home/car/bike ins?

Old 5* vet vertificate was Jun 08 btw

I pay £30 a month with KBIS and they are nice to deal with
I have never had to claim. I also have BHS gold membership to ride other horses ! my policy only covers people when riding my horse so you'd have to know that the other horse had insurance (A sign that I am getting old as I never even thought of this when I was younger)

Thanks for all the info guys

, thats great and im busy getting quotes from the recommended one's.

Noticed most need a 2 stage vetting for my foal, so will need to get that done i expect..typical just had vet out to get his passport done last week. And this week he has an abscess!!!!

Just wondered - has anyone insured through
horse-insurance.co.uk??? they seem to be coming up cheapest for the two of them, are they any good?

Thanks again, Ang
