as many of you now poor abby has been in her stable for 3 weeks now due to bruised soles

farrier now thinks she should be put out without a shoe on

vet says not to take her out until she has a shoe on

i see both sides an she is dying to get out and get some proper fresh air, she needs it, being older its no good for her being stuck inside. but who do i side with?? she is walking as normal as she can without having a shoe on and the bruising is looking miles better

but i worry putting her out will bring back the bruising and aggravate it. i wanted to put an equiboot on her if she goes out just for that added protection (going to speak to farrier about using one again today). but again vet disagrees :S

who's right???
 
Vet - beyond me why you'd want to put a horse with a bruised sole out without a shoe, sounds like a recipe for a repeat incident to me.
 
thats what i had thought?? baffeled to why farrier said he would of put her out?? just curious if it would make it better in anyway. she's already been off work for over 2 months and is looking so sorry for her self i don't want to have to keep her in for another 3 weeks.

does anyone think an equiboot would be an option??
 
i usually trust him fully without a doubt, but will the bruising not come back?

So do I - normally.

But in this instance I would be going with the vet I'm afraid.

Can shoes be put on now??
 
I had a similar situation and turned the boy out in his equiboot with gamgee ductaped (is this a verb?)to the hoof to protect it. He was only allowed in a small completely flat bit of the field and i picked up any stones daily.
 
An equiboot with padding as Land_Girl suggested would be good. Is there any way you can get a second opinion from other vets and farriers?

My farrier suggested riding my mare who has fused bones in her fetlock!!

My first reaction was to go with the vet - which I am sure is the best option from a physical point of view.

But then there is balancing psychological needs with physical ones. If my horse was in this situation and truly really unhappy and going berserk I think I'd probably go for equiboot and restricted t/out area.

If not going mental then I'd leave horse in.
 
My lad had a bruised sole and sore foot from crap shoeing ( changed farrier obviously, got a great one now) but I turned him out with padding and vetwrap- stayed in place great, padded his sole and when he could have a show on again he was sound straight away.
 
I used to find myself quite often in this position in which case I would pad the foot with nappy and duct tape and jam that lot into an equiboot.
I still do that now when I loose a shoe and the farrier is going to be a couple of days before he can get to us
 
Who is your vet and who is your farrier? Initials will do! I'd personally try and get them to speak to each other as one may have noticed something that the other hadn't or could discuss their experiences with different treatments.
 
dm is farrier and clyde valley is our vets both are fab!! abby is not going mad or anything and is calm but for her well being i want her to be out. farrier is unsure if he'll be able to put a shoe on cause of where the bruising is he should be up again tonight or tomoro to see her again
 
If Andrew has told you not to turn out then don't do it - he knows his stuff! If you really, really have to turn out then put three pampers nappys round her foot then vetwrap then duct tape and she'll be able to pootle about on that for a couple of hours quite happily.
 
Agree with Scotsmare, Clyde valley are great and I'd go with their judgement. Dm has always been one to err very much on tghe side of caution so I'm suprised he's giving you that advice. If in doubt I'd phone farrier tonight, explain what vets have said and let him think about a solution
 
the vet who has been seeing her is chris and he is brilliant!! really is they all are at clyde valley. its only one hoof does that make a difference??
 
Can you get your vet and farrier to discuss this between them and see what they can agree on?
