when i wasn't looking for one, shetlands were practically being launched at me. i was also offered a lovely little exmoor pony only 6 months ago...

but now i'm looking... i can't find anything. so... you guys are ACE at hunting... can anyone find me one?

i want a companion for my horse, who can be used as a lead rein pony for my kids.

essential:
good to handle
small
cheap (pref under 500... would go over budget for something special (eg bombproof, showable etc)
no biters or kickers

age not important as long as it's relatively healthy.
am 99% sure i want a gelding, but would maybe consider a mare if there is nothing else.
i'd consider something unbroken as long as it was breakable and had a quiet temprement.
would consider laminitics and sweetitch etc
vices also considered, the most important thing is that it has a good, kind nature and can be handled by small people (with supervision...)

um... anyone?

p.s. packet of mint poppets if you find me one (just discovered these GLORIOUS sweets)

i have one going for free to a good home he hasnt done anythin just a companion for my other two dont know what breed he is though hes yogi in the pic

You could also contact the Shetland Stud Book Society, they will put you in contact with some local breeders, which may have some that are not up to show/breeding standard but are willing to let go for pet/companion homes.

11.3HH UTTERLY BOMBPROOF FIRST PONY

Tatiana is a welsh A x Shetland 5yo grey mare who is utterly bombproof

As a lead rein pony she will potter next to you without the need for a lead rein and trot off happily with a little one without being naughty

She will give pony rides all day and is happy to be dressed up in bells, tinsel etc

She has seen marquees take off in the wind, heavy traffic, hares jumping out under her feet and rugby teams running towards her without turning a hair and we have yet to find anything to upset her

She has done some pony club rallies and also minicamp

I have had harness on her and she long reins and pulls a pallet over noisy ground with absolutely no fuss

She is 100% to catch, load, trim, clip and for the farrier

She has hard little feet, so doesn’t need shoes, lives out 24/7 and is a tough little pony that is never out of sorts – no laminitis or sweet itch

No pony is perfect and she does make faces when you tighten the girth and she will never get to HOYS as a show pony, but moves well and is a sweetie

At present she is at schooling livery, where some older girls are doing canter work and jumping with her as I have always had beginners on her and she is enjoying hacking out in large groups etc

Can email more photos after camp

i totally agree. esp as the pony will be with us for years and years, it's just a case of getting my hubby to agree to drive me (i'm 8 months preggers, probably shouldn't risk going it alone...!)

I have a 4 year old welsh section C as yet unbacked, very pretty, BUT has foal at foot so not available till october!! - sorry that's not much help!!

hi there, i could let you have a nice little black and white shetland. he is 3yrs well bred with a book, i have not gelded him yet. if you wish you could p m me and i could send you pictures

I got my daughters Shetland from a lady that runs the pony rides at a popular beach resort

It might be worth enquiring, if you have anything like this local to you - the lady I bought mine off says hers are always available for sale if a good home comes along. The ponies are sold healthy, totally ideal as kids LR ponies and usually live off pretty much fresh air. I paid a VERY reasonable price for ours.

What a shame it needs to be a lead rein for now, as I have two young geldings (just done), one a yearling, one a three year old, who have come in to me to be sold. But obviously both are too young to be ridden yet - and the yearling is still learning some manners, so not ideal for small children yet - but he will be!

Also a shame it's now you're looking and that it's a gelding you're after - once I have weaned the current foal she has, I shall be loaning, poss with a view to buy, a mare I have.

Just in case you're interested in any of ours, this is our address: www.varkiesstud.co.uk
