Well, I have 99.9% decided on a husband for Maya, at last!! Im hoping to mate her this year, she had her season in early August last year, would be nice if she did again this year, early babies are good, but it could be anytime between August and November that she's in season :)

I've settled on a British dog who is a complete outcross. Theres always a lot of differing opinions on doing that as you never know what you will get, but theres such a small gene pool and a lot of close breedings going on so im going to do something different, a bit of a gamble, and hope it pays off!! Fingers crossed!

Anyway, who wants to see him? :D

And here is Maya for anyone who has no idea what im on about lol!

He looks lovely!

Please educate me as to what the term "outcross" means? and why it's a gamble! :)

Well, Maya is from American lines, her parents were both imported. So instead of going back into those lines and using a relative (which is being done....) the boy I have chosen is an outcross, so from completely unrelated lines. He actually has british, swedish, german, dutch and american lines, so quite a mixture.

Theres not much at all I want to change about Maya, i pretty much love everything about her but I would love to have a stronger head on her pups, so im hoping the stud will pass his stunning head on :D

He is a real handsome chap and that head, (but he knows it doesn't he!) and multicultural. Has he got inbreeding in his pedigree?

I keep comparing the pics, and Maya is the better quality dog to me :) I must read the breed standard I suppose, that is just a gut instinct :D:D:D

No, he has no inbreeding at all :) Will be interesting to see what they produce anyway.

Yeah, possibly. He was only about 8 months old in that pic. Maya is particularly nice though ;) I was trying to find a stud dog that particularly excelled in the areas she could do with improving (the head - although hers is very nice, it wouldnt hurt to have a stronger head on her) in the hopes he passes that on. Im very limited for stud dogs as the top producers this year have been her father and litter brother lol!

ETA: That was my first time ever doing the multiple quotes!!! Well done me :D

I do see what Mr Happy means, I feel Maya has more substance and more presence but in her photo she is in show posture and his photo he is caught off guard. Only my opinion and you know far more than me, I still think hes a stunner.

Maya has certainly done an awful lot of winning lol. But his time will come, he's had a couple of Best Puppy in Breeds and he was Best Puppy in Show at the summer championship show, so he certainly is a very promising young dog, im looking forward to seeing how he does this year. I think he's a good match for Maya though, lovely size and shape and of course, that head :D

Exactly Dobiegirl - thanks for putting it into words for me :) She has a better spring of rib too? But then if he is young in the pic I can understand that :)

Awwww basenji puppies :D

Handsome looking chap. I started my line with a total outcross to american lines, gave me bitch what I wanted. Since then I have always tried to line breed but not too close.
I am just beginning to look at dogs for Evie though not decided yet I am definitely going to mate her. She too is due in season August, but would probably be late August/September, so I am putting things off till February 2012, a) to give me more time to decide if I am going to mate her and b) so I don't risk a litter being ready to go round Christmas time.
I also have a similar problem with males as her grandad is very close up in the pedigrees of a lot of the top dogs around at the moment.

I think its good to try to do an outcross this time, Maya is from a fairly close breeding, her parents are aunt/nephew. Another stud dog I have been offered is Maya's nephew, he is a stunning young dog but I feel that I need to go for an outcross, establish a nice foundation for my line then go from there. It might all go wrong of course, but fingers crossed it doesnt! :D

The problem with basenjis is that because they only have the one season a year your limited on when you can mate them, great for showing cos you miss less shows, but more complicated for breeding. She will be 3 this year so i really need to try this time as if she doesnt take we could try again at 4, but if I didnt try til next year we could be looking at her first litter at 5 if she doesnt take... That wouldnt be so good! This dog is certainly (IMO) the best match for her around at the moment.

I love basenjis, i used to handle a few in the ring. Real feisty wee dogs. Are you going to keep a dog or a bitch.
I would think there must be some line breeding in his pedigree, just not in-breeding. That isn't done too often.

No, not in the last 4 or 5 generations, they used a lot of overseas dogs in his pedigree. There almost certainly will be line breeding further back of course :)

Im hoping to keep a tri colour bitch, this mating would only give tri colour anyway, so fingers crossed for a little girl!

I'd be tempted to total outcross this time like you're planning, perhaps use the nephew on the bitch you keep? That wouldn't be as close in theory but I haven't got the pedigree in front of me so can't really say lol.

I'm hopefully putting Bridget in whelp, her hipscore came back the other day, 9 :D I've got to have Stanley's done now as I'm hoping to use him as although they share a line (his dam is her grand-dam) they're total outcrosses on the other side.

We'll need an AAD babies thread at this rate lol

Yeah, that is what im thinking at the moment, though I am considering importing one in the future, when I can afford it! So will see what happens with that.

Good luck with your breeding! There might be a whole load of HHO puppies this year! How exciting :D
