Hi all, knowing everyones negative feelings towards the rspca (seen on many an rspca bashing thread!!) I just wondered if you'd never donate to the rspca, who you'd call if you saw an animal in distress/cruelty/abuse etc???? I realise for horse concerns there are alot who'd call the whw or bhs, but bear in mind these don't take prosecutions. I don't want to hear all your negative experiences, seen enough of them on the bashing threads, just want to know who you'd call or expect to take the prosecution???

There is no reason why the police can't take a prosecution forwards, they are supposed to uphold ALL laws not just the ones they fancy.
If the treatment of an animal is against the law, they are the people who should be doing the job.
Quite apart from the merits or otherwise of the RSPCA, why on earth are we relying on a voluntary organisation to uphold the law?

Do the Blue cross have the ability to prosecute? I think most of the other organisations prefer to "re-educate" in cases of ignorance, but perhaps the RSPCA can be requested to prosecute by these charities?

This exactly. I think people don't realise the RSPCA don't get any government funding. Would we expect the NSPCC to take on all child related cruelty cases? I don't think so.

I agree that the RSPCA don't always get it right and to a certain degree they are a victim of their own success. The TV programmes we see make it look like there is an Inspector in every town waiting to spring into action when in reality there are a handful per county. The RSPCA would be the people I would call to report a problem but I would be prepared to chase them up if necessary.

Anyone has the ability to prosecute, the rspca take private prosecutions. It's not that the bluecross, whw, bhs or equine market watch can't take prosecutions, but rather that they either don't have the training to, or choose not to due to money restrictions. I agree education and advise have their place and should be used first, and I know the rspca do as much of this any any other welfare organisation, but these don't hit the press like the prosecutions do, hence people only seem to think the rspca do cases! I quite agree pearlsasinger that the police should be taking these cases. But you phone the police about anything regarding an animal and they will either tell you to phone the rspca or do it themselves! No the charity is not perfect, but I think they get dumped on a hell of a lot. Why should it be down to a charity to uphold animal welfare law?!
