Kids had Pony Club Zone ODE yesterday, my son got bucked off in the warm up, about 10 minutes before his dressage test. I popped him back on as he had not hit his head, and only complained of sore ribs. The paramedic had a quick check of him as well. Today the doctor advises bruised kidneys, and that he would have been suffering from toxic shock at some time yesterday.

He completed the event (with an appalling dressage score, (he was really shaky initially)), he said it was hard to ride/steer the pony, but that he felt ok, just sore.

Now OH is going to tell me I am a bad mum, should have taken him to hospital etc etc. He is propbably right, because I should not have taken notice of what my son said was wrong, but should have had him checked out sooner. Having said that my son seemed to improve during the day, and not look worse, he was bright and cheerful, although not running around much. One more peice of ammunition against me for my poor mothering skills.

Thanks for the comments - I used to panic with the kids but after three kids and 19 years of having kids, they must feel a bit neglected. Turns out it was a fractured rib only, but son and OH decided son not getting enough sympathy, so embellished the doctors comments.

So I was ok to let him ride, and boy is my son going to get it when I get home. (Will prbably have a bruised kidney by the time I finish with him.)

My daughter rang me the other day to tell me the cat was dead, and then started lauging part way through the story, (not dead, just teasing her poor mum.), They really do like to give me a hard time.

Hey, I sent my daughter to Youth Club with a broken arm ( well she had been playing her Gameboy fine!). Apparently she'd sufferered a green stick fracture when she fell off our garden swing. Was in plaster in a few weeks. Yes, I felt a bad mum!

My son fell off his pogo stick when he was young and hurt his arm. I moved it about a bit and told him it was fine, just a bit bruised. My OH decided to take him to A&E the next day as it still hurt, and he had a greenstick fracture - oops!

I gave my daughter 2 spoons of nurofen after complaining of tummy ache - 2 hours later we were on our way to hospital to have her appendix out. I have never been allowed to live it down but we are not doctors and 99.9% of the time we worry over nothing.x

Don't worry my mum told me to "have a hot bath, it'll be better in the morning" after a crashing fall. It wasn't better in the morning, what with there being three fractures and she did have a bit of explaining to do at the hospital when I told them I did it over 24 hours later. But I'm still here 20 years later, still speak to my mother and she wasn't prosecuted for child cruelty :-D

I broke a number of my ribs riding as a teenager and mum never took me to A&E once. Inher defence I never realised I was just a bit sore and never didn't manage to get straight back on.

Paula.

Ach these things happen.

When my daughter was about 18 months she fell on the beach on hols. She was screaming her head off and I was like come on you are fine it's just sand :o. She recovered fairly quickly, spent another hour on the beach then went back for lunch. Took her sun hat off and discovered an enormous lump on her forehead :(

Looked back at the video and saw that she had hit her head off the only rock on the beach and you can hear the sickening crunch on the video  still has a dent in her head if she raises her eye brows 2 years later :o:o:o

Ah, don't worry. I fell of mid jumping lesson and despite my wails of protest Mum insisted that the instructor pop me back on and that I finish the lesson. Dad was worried when we got home so they took me to A&E...fractured arm. And she never even apologised!! Still didn't hold it against her though....

Think my worst bad mummy moment - 17 year old daughter had taken a crunching fall off a very naughty youngster we ( she!) was backing. Told her to shut up and get on and ride through it - the nest day we BSJA'd over two 1.20 and a 1.30 class. she said her should was really sore and I sent her to A&E on her own ( cos she was moaning!!) and she had a badly fractured collarbone.......

I still haven't seen a doctor 14 years after fracturing my coccyx aged 11!

Mum chucked me back on the pony (was in too much pain to mount on my own and he was only 12.1hh!) and I finished competing!

I couldn't stand up or sit down for 3 days! Ended up pulling the sink off the wall in the bathroom trying to get off the loo!

ETA - oops - forgot I was browsing through old posts!! LOL!

We are only human. You made a judgement call and thats all you can do and the fact that he seemed fine, well I probably would have done the same.

When I was at school I was doing a handstand and my hand gave way. The teacher was concerned and bought me home in her sports car. My mum thought I had just sprained it so wrapped it up. Next day mum was shouting at me and told me to take bandage off because there was nothing wrong with me. It wasnt swollen or bruised. Following day the same teacher bought me home from school again and finally mum took me to hospital only to reveal a broken wrist. I certainly remember it but I dont hold it against my mum at all. You can only do your best with your kids and like me, he might remmeber the incident but Im sure he wont hold it against you.

Funny isnt it, when you become a mum you almost have to accept living with constant guilt!

I fell off my horse hunting one day and (unknowingly at the time) knocked my skull off kilter on my neck. As the only thing I complained of when I got up was being winded, my dad made me get back on the horse and continue the rest of the day riding.

Eight years later and the back lady had a field day putting it back in place! OUCH!

Toxic Shock is form of septacaemia and you don't recover without IV antibiotics and intensive care:eek: You don't get it from bruised kidneys!
I am sure he was "shocked" as in shaken up and bruised but toxic shock is bacterial infection that overwhelms the body so I think your doctor has got his terms muddled:)
I have sent my son to school with a "cough" that developed into pneumonia as the day wore on , and made him do his homework with a greenstick wrist fracture. My daughter chipped her tibia when a horse stood on her and she got back on the pony and finished a jumping round and it was weeks later that we realised what she had done.
Kids are seriously tough :) Thank goodness - and they usually tell you properly when something is seriously wrong. The fact that a paramedic checked him would reassure me too. I bet he is very stiff and sore though.
Hope he feels better soon.
