Our horses had their shoes back on Wednesday and yesterday we went on a hack. First one since October and it was so lovely to be out again.

All well behaved apart from mine having a slight fit at a car/horse trailer that didn't slow down, causing him to whip round and buck!

I turned Rose out last July and brought her into work last week and she's just as well behaved as she was then :) I like to think it's down to the shire/Clyde in her lol. Unfortunatly I sprained my ankle 2 days ago slipping on a wet floor so looks like she's having some more time off lol

Erm yep that would be me! With 3 children, work and the short dark days I just don't have the time to ride in the winter. I have a ex point to pointer TB and apart from losing his topline, he does really well having the time off.
I am starting to ride him now and he is his usual self.
:D:D

yep have been riding her for about 3 weeks now after winter break (no manege and we are in Cairngorms and ice tracks for months !), although in a month I have to have 2 months off cos of an op so it is frustrating to get her fitter and then have to drop it again, Thank goodness she is the type you can do that with.

Started with 20 mins walk, we are now up to an hour or so with some trotting and short canters.

She isnt shod so I dont have to worry about that side of things. Theres not a lot of roadwork either.

Me too. My little mare never changes, she can have 6 months off, back to ride her and it is as if I rode her yesterday. Nice feeling.

Oh no! typical, So far after starting to bring one of mine back into work its snowed sand there was thick ice on our lane almost a week- no riding, then i had a car crash, No riding, then i got thrown from another horse- no riding now i have a bad back! tomorrow i'm going to the physio so no riding!
A month into being brought back into work ive ridden him....ONCE!!!!

Me - except mine has had three winters and two summers off!

She was a bit nuts years ago so we've done two rides so far, both being baby-sat by my brother (who Pottie LOVES and would follow anywhere) walking with us on the other end of a lunge line. Just as a safety net :) She has been so "not bothered" though that we went off the line for the second half of our 20 minute walk yesterday. She seems to be quite enjoying herself so far! We're planning on four weeks of walk and then starting trot work, and aiming to get in the school for short bursts in six to eight weeks. It all depends on how she takes it, though - I don't want her too fit in walk as she'll boil over :p

We're hoping she'll make a smart dressage pony - she's 16 and has been a typical fizzy little teenager's pony, so now she's "mine" she'll have to calm down! I expect I'll find someone who wants to jump her though, she has a rather good pop on her. We'll see in a few months :)

I'm lucky enough to have another I've been riding once a week all winter, but he's just had two teeth out and a whole load of pus drained from his face so Pottie coming back into work has nicely fitted in with not being able to ride Frank! I'm really looking forward to hacking and treating her as mine though - riding someone else's is lovely but not like riding your own!

I'll be posting a first "getting Pottie back into work" post this week, and updates every so often - I'd like to see anyone else's horses coming back into work, too!

yeah, a few weeks ago. 1st decent dry day, i just put the bridle on and went for a bareback ride round field and he was great. he is 20, but thinks he still is 4 in field with friends then when you ride him he is soo good and quiet. 1st time on him in months. didnt bet an eyelid.

Mine had 6 weeks off over Christmas and January as work was manic! They live out though so have kept their fitness pretty well They've been back in work about 2/3 weeks now and feel great.

Me! Kal had three months off (mid-October to mid-Jan) due my illness and has now been back in work for about 7 weeks or so. It's been a bit stop-y start-y what with the weather, falls (mine off him) and lameness (his - sound now though) but he's now back in full work and looking much better for it. Looks far less like a horse straight from the field and/or a yak and more like a horse actually owned by someone!

Have to say, despite bogging off with me a couple of weeks ago (my fault - took him hacking right after the hunt had been through the yard), he hasn't put a foot wrong. First time I sat on him in the school (and a new yard too), he was an angel.

Good luck with yours - would be interested to hear your progress/how you are fittening and strengthening your horse?

P

My fella comes back in to ridden work once the clocks go forward, it will be 9 months since he went lame with tendon troubles. I'm lucky to have other peoples horses to ride but there's nothing like riding your own. Can't wait, although got 12 weeks of walking to look forward to.

I keep trying to get started, but the weather interferes! Do you need to do weeks of walking out if you are only trying to be light hacking fit ? Mine is fed up of walking especially if we go off piste !

Me too!!! Usually don't work mine between Dec and Feb, basically because my riding is for fun, and I don't find trying to ride in the dark and ice remotely funny! Always find they come back into work with a good attitude.

Was such a mild winter this year though that V only got January and half of February off. Long-lined her a few times to check we still had brakes and steering then kept her hacking on the roads for a few weeks (there is no way either of us could stick to walk once we hit soft ground). Introduced a little trot work in week two. We are not in a rush though as not doing anything until April.:)
