Who's fallen off wearing a Point Two jacket?

I absent mindedly dismounted swinging my leg over the front while wearing the jacket - it wasn't pretty!! The jacket took a while to release, meantime I was suspended from the horse. (But I will Never do that again!!)

Would like to hear other people's experiences!!
 
Think that's what happened to that guy on the tv at Burghley on Sunday? Question: When they go off do they make a noise which would therefore spook an already spooked horse?

It should have released as soon as more than six stone was suspended from the lanyard. I'll bet the voices of all the people who'd told you never to dismount like that were going through your head!:o

Yes they make a noise but it's not very loud and hasn't IME spooked any other horses. Of course if your horse can't cope with bangs or cars backfiring in the distance or pigeon scarers several fields off then it probably would be spooked.
 
I can just imagine the scenario...jacket going off whilst still attached, horse bolting with whooshing noise, me trying to scrabble back into the saddle...Also, we helped at a sponsored ride recently and one lady's had gone off, she had to retire as was too uncomfortable to ride in it inflated - I'd need to try one but it's a lot of money if you decide you don't like it!

You can certainly hire them at some events nowadays.

The lady who retired - strange that as they are designed to deflate over a matter of minutes, usually XC there just isn't the time to insert a new canister but I'd have thought on a sponsored ride there would be no time issues - don't know though, it's so many years since I've done one.

My daughter's tested hers in earnest a couple of times now and feels that it was worth having it on. OK it wasn't a serious rotational fall but she was fired fairly hard into a log and felt that it saved her from a serious bruising and possibly broken ribs. When you're just about to do your A levels it's worth not risking doing them with broken ribs!

The chap who used to complete my little mare for me jumped off her at the end of a course and forgot to undo himself - that's how I know that no horses in the vicinity were spooked. He was so impressed by the quietness that although he'd refused to use it on his youngsters he thought that he might try it from then on.

At the end of the day you have to do your own cost / benefit analysis - some people don't think they're worth it, some people think they're dangerous, some people believe they owe their lives to them. It's a free choice!

I went to burghley this weekend to buy one especially........ you cannot put a price on a life. They have been proved to save lives or prevent serious injury, just look at the fall of Ollie Townsend in Kentucky. We think nothing of spending in excess of £100 on a rug for the horses to roll in the mud and on occasions shred them. How much have you spent on new rugs in the lifetime of your horses?
 
Sis had a full-on rotational in hers BE-ing. Got up from under the horse, collected the reins and trotted him up to check he was sound. The next day he was still sound, but stiffer than she was!
Other sis borrowed it to school a 4yo and forgot and jumped off at the end, said it was a noticable "pop" but horse didn't move.
 
I've had a fall in my point 2. It was a horse fall, and ironically at the very first event I wore it!
I was concerned that in the event of a horse fall you may not come far enough away from the horse, or with enough weight for it to be activated. I'm sure, that in some cases, this would be the case, but in this particular fall, it worked brilliantly, despite us coming down together.
 
Heard nothing but good things about them and the jockey club have been making noises about trying to get a lightweight one for racing, not that they are that heavy.

I think you only need to look at Ollie and Karim's falls (latter is on their website) to know how effective they are.

Once I've saved up enough I'm having one.
 
I havent i was amazed at female rider who had took the force of ther horse and got up !I had volume down as visitors came i had herd from friends who were there she had collapsed after but then seen her get up and get in vehicle-i want to know more sounds like a proper back protecter and the chinese guy alex amazing glue ! And the female rider surname skelton liked her bubbly character and guts well done its a shame such a big event didnt have more press/tv coverage inc. behind the scene clips well done all competitors /grooms/helpers well done <sorry waffled off topc a bit >
