Who's going out Boxing Day?

South Notts at Car Colston, really lovely meet at the pub and good hunting day, lots of space and fun for all experience levels. There are always plenty of people out to help newbies and explain what to do and not to do and to help them round any jumps they don't want to do. Great place to watch hounds work as well.

I will be going to the meet on foot.
The horses get dropped off down the road from the meet, I will have to wait for all of the cars and people to go (it is manic!) and then move the lorry to the finishing place. Hopefully I can find someone to drop me back off to get my car.
Then I have the rest of the horses at the yard to do when I get back.

Manic is an understatement!!! I will be going out on my ponio!

if anyone in the peterborough area is off out on boxing day and has a spare space in their trailer or lorry (tb gelding 16.1hh) then i would be happy to pay fuel! my boy has not been hunting but i think he would love it!

I am sure that both your boy (and you) would love it but please don't try BD as a first day. It really can become very silly. I would hate to hear after the day that you had have "an incident". Go and fly the flag on your feet instead - far safer.

I agree with Mr Woof about not Boxing Day for first time out - but don't go for a Children and Beginner's meet either - they are REALLY mad affairs! I once jumped a child and her pony, as they rode across the face of a fence when I was already committed to it.

I'd agree too. The difference is that BD is meant as a regular hunting day and it is up to beginners and youngsters to accept that fact and ride/be accompanied accordingly. At a children's or Newcomers' meet, it is up to regulars and those more experienced to ride with novices or children in mind.

I'm only going on foot, can't be doing with 70 people out and my horse with a fried brain!

Oh blimey cc, how lucky are you?? 70 horses seems to be a standard/quiet day when I've been out! Yikes! Wonder what BD will be?

Definitely in two minds now, after reading this thread. Horse far, far too precious to risk. I will see how he is this Saturday, if he's good I'll get a few more times in before Xmas, then decide. Will also chat to secretary!

Yes, I am going out. I gave up BDs on my coloured after it was just NOT worth it, winds him up something stupid and I don't enjoy him when he is an idiot.
My OH is lending me one of his horsies to go with his hunt, so I will be sat on something relative sane :)

me me me. I'm out on boxing day. That is the point of christmas after all is it not :p. I agree with the people above bd is not a good first expereance for a horse it is very mad and you get alot of once a yeares on nutty horses. With my old hunt it was my job on bd to ride allong at the back and pick up all the fallen riders and catch the loose horses. It realy is mayhem for the first hour normaly.

Will be going on foot now with the quorn. Going on the 29th instead. Well injury willing i will be anyway. Otherwise going to be following on foot a lot which is just as good :)

So when is the best time for a newbie to go?

You tend to find that mid-weeks (in school term time) hunts tend to be a lot more quiet then weekends. Phone your local secretary to ask what they would suggest :)

If you are waiting till next season then you could start with a few "Early Morning" meets which are just glorified hacks generally.

I'm hunting boxing day with the Waveney Harriers. We meet in a town though so it does tend to get a bit manic but i'm lucky with my boy/donkey :)

thanks for that, I have been told that I can my share horse hunting next year if he is fit but I have never been before.
Will bear that in mind for next year and its a good idea going mid-week :)

I'll be mounted with the Quorn...my farrier and I have agreed to jump everything...slightly unfair! Mine is 13.1h, and his is 16.2h!!

My girl is very good and will go front, back or middle so we just keep out of the way!!
